So folks, you think you have it bad if you’re stuck in traffic for 45mn in a cozy and warm cab? think again!

Apparently, the trains stopped running for a good 30mn and there was no explanation from the subway management or whatsoever….
I am just horrified at that ocean of people stuffed onto a platform.

Here is the original post on weibo with almost 2000 forwards already

The ever amicable Mushroom, that you’ve seen around 2 Kolegas for the past few years, happens to run a company that makes some quality leather gear… pretty good stuff!
This saturday and sunday, They’re putting together a flea market with secondhand books, clothes and high-end and vintage bags just to name a few..
Make your way down to Rfactory’s Flea Market, a two-day affair of food, drinks and shopping – that includes their own collection of Rfactory bags, as well as all the participating vendors that they’ve invited.

It fits really well with the gig planned saturday night where 2 of the most fashionable bands in Beijing will be in stage: DH & The Hellcats and Free The Birds… both front women are know for vintage good looks.

November 19-20. Noon-6pm. 2 Kolegas (6436 8998)

There’s been a lot of talk about the over abundance of festivals in China this year. Jon Campbell and China Daily, both have interesting posts on this. I agree 4 festivals competing in one weekend in Beijing is just stupid, but this my year of seeing more of China, and taking advantage of festivals and shows outside the city is a great way to see a little more of this country. BD went to the West Lake Festival to see his beloved Concrete Blonde last month and last weekend’s In Music festival in Zhangbei was my perfect excuse to escape the oppressive heat in Beijing and chill out under the blue skies in Hebei.

XTX playing the guzheng (Photo: Grace Lee)

My at first eager friends were all put off by reports of last year’s mud fest, trash & transport problems and bailed on a three day camping trip, but I managed to find one metal-head buddy willing to go for one day, so we planned to make our way out on the direct bus put on by the festival on Sunday morning. We arrived at the long distance bus station 5 mins too late and watched the first bus pull out as we walked in, meaning we had to wait for enough people to arrive to fill the next bus. By the 2 hour mark there was a group of angry festival goers arguing loudly with the organizers to let us on the bus, finally they caved in and the bus took off at 12noon.

We made it to Zhangbei easily at 3.30, with none of the traffic nightmares that Friday & Saturday arrivals faced. Worried we’d missed Nanwu who were scheduled to play at 2.45, as we walked in the gates we heard the familiar sounds of the flute, woodblock and beijinghua and were relieved to find they’d just started – the festival was running nearly an hour late already! Nanwu are always crowd pleasers and they didn’t disappoint. Their songs are just so catchy, you can’t help singing and dancing along with them.

Nanwu's lead singer (Photo: Grace Lee)

After Nanwu we set up our camp spot and assessed the food situation – not great, chuan’r or pot noodles, but we’d brought plenty of snacks to keep us going; and more importantly the drinks situation – beer RMB10 a bottle poured into cups, water RMB3 surprisingly given out in bottles. Once we got up the front later in the day those bottles where being thrown around the crowd, soaking and injuring many people. I was surprised to see some brave parents still with little kids perched on their shoulders to see the bands. One lesson for next year – don’t give out bottles!

Steely Heart rocked the crowd, I’ve sent these guys a couple of times in Beijing and they never really caught my attention, but they were great in a festival setting with the crowd clapping and singing along. Josie Ho and the Uni boys from Hong Kong came on after them. Stanley Ho’s daughter, is a model, and movie star trying to prove herself as a singer as well. Well, my first advice would be take some singing lessons! Her band was actually not bad, but she ruined it by attempting to sing, not even resorting to screaming like most wannabe singers.

Steely Heart gets the crowd clapping (Photo: Ruby)

The three stages were set up side by side, with the set alternating between them, so there was no down time, the crowd just moved from stage to stage. Our spot back from the middle ‘Highlight’ stage meant we could enjoy the music from all three without moving from the camp at all. It was really apparent at this point that this was a definitely local festival, with my red hair attracting more than the normal amount of photo opportunities and calls of “laowai, laowai!”

XTX stirring up the crowd (Photo: Grace Lee)

Finally came the act I’d been waiting for – XTX. I’ve seen this guy hanging out and jamming at 2Kolegas, I have all four of his albums, but I had never managed to catch him actually performing with his band. We got as close to the stage as we could. The roar of the crowd as the lights came up to show the guzheng on stage and XTX walking on was deafening! Almost immediately water bottles started being thrown into the air and we got soaked pretty quickly, but it was worth it . They played all the old songs, the crowd getting more and more fired up, moshing and screaming along to ‘Wo bu ai ni”. If I wasn’t converted already, I’m now a huge XTX fan and can’t wait to see him play again at Tango for the Tiger Translate finals later this month.

Up next was Tricky, I didn’t really know what to expect with this one – how well is he known here? It was an OK set, but not my style of music and the sound wasn’t great. He played too long in my opinion, and many people, myself included, wandered away before his set even finished.

Tricky (Photo: Grace Lee)

BD has accused me of wearing my ‘ruby coloured glasses’ on this one, but I wasn’t expecting a Midi/Strawberry type of festival in the grasslands, this one was always going to be down & dirty deal. I’m no stranger to festivals – I’ve camped in the rain at Meredith, gotten a cracked rib from moshing to QOSTA at V Fest, survived 40+ degrees refusing to lose my front of stage spot at Big Day Out – compared to those this was tame. James Tiscione has an excellent write up of the lack of organization the bands and fans faced. I wasn’t there the first two days, but I really enjoyed the last day. The wild passion of a moshpit is what makes a festival great! The bottles of water I could have done without, but I just copied XTX himself, pulling up my hood to the shield the water.

Cuijian fans (Photo: Ruby)

The offer of a ride back to Beijing meant we decided to pack up and hit the road before Cuijian to beat the crowds. But I’m sure I’ll catch him again at some other festival … after all there’s no shortage of them this year right? So, anyone wanna go to Rizhao this weekend???

It promised to be a great night, 17 awesome bands from around the world (Jindabaad from Nepal didn’t make it) including our own Amazing Insurance Salesmen, plus a special performance from last year’s winners Rustic. I had hoped to live blog the event, but the crappy local 3G service sucked my battery dry in around an hour, so here’s a wrap up of what happened …

Rustic (photo - Paul Murphy)

Let’s start with THE GOOD

The music! Here’s what I thought of the 17 bands who played …

The top 6 (according to the judges)

The winners Dubtonic Kru from Jamaica
Congratulations! But I have to say, I really don’t get why these guys won. Sure they’re great at what they do, but they’re coming from a country full of great reggae bands. I guess I was expecting something different from them, some way of going beyond what we know about reggae. They were a fun band and put in a great performance, but they weren’t in my top 6.

Dubtonic Kru (photo - Bjorn E Melbye, GBoB website)

In 2nd place – Salvador from Russia
I missed thees guys when I was backstage, as they were drowned out by the Jamaican hand drummer warming up. When I checked out the GBoB website before the show they were actually the only band whose music I turned off before listening to it all, so I wasn’t disappointed to have missed them. Going by Chris B’s impression they were strange, and not in a good way! The judges must have liked it though …

Salvador (photo - Bjorn E Melbye , GBoB website)

In 3rd place – Shenaniganz from Germany
From the name you’d think they were a boy-band, and you wouldn’t quite be wrong on that assumption. These guys started off in high school, winning school battle of the bands titles. Had the judges been 15 year old girls they would have won, especially after one of the boys ended their second song by stage diving into the crowd. They were high energy rock, but not my style. And they also seemed to miss the memo about no swearing!

Shenaniganz (photo - Bjorn E Melbye, GBoB website)

In 4th place – Sonsteek from South Africa
The band with the ginger clones! (one of them below) I liked these guys, good alt. rock, singing in Afrikaans, great stage presence. They were a solid act, again nothing hugely individual about their sound, but still in my option deserving of the place they got.

Sonsteek (photo - Paul Murphy)

In 5th place – White Walls from Romania
These guys delivered an awesome hard-core punk/metal performance! The lead singer’s voice was impressive, not quite at the scale of Serg Tankian, but definitely up there. His constant anti-clockwise pacing around the stage was distracting though. I loved their music and agree they deserved to be in the top 6!

White Walls (photo - Paul Murphy)

In 6th place – Nope from Morocco
These guys were in mine and many others’ top three so it was huge shock to everyone when they were announced as sixth! They may be young, but they know how to work the crowd. With two lead singers, one in a red cape and hood, the other in a kilt and one boxing glove, they held the crowds attention from the second they came on stage. My only criticism is that the show the singers put on possibly detracted a little too much from the music itself and I’m not sure how it would come across recorded. But I loved their performance and will be keeping an eye out for more from them.

Nope (photo - Paul Murphy)

And those who were equally great (if not better!) but didn’t get the judges nod of approval.

Amazing Insurance Salesmen from China
The Beijing boys came on third and they were on fire! Giving the crowd one of their awesome tighter than tight performances we’re used to. For me they were one of the few bands there that were doing something different from the run of the mill alt rock/punk/metal of the majority of bands. I heard a few people on the crowd saying they were technically the best musicians of the night, so I’m really not sure why they were overlooked by the judges!

Amazing Insurance Salesmen (photo - Paul Murphy)

Experienced from Belgium
Thia band has been together for around 10 years and they showed it. Great stage presence, the singer not only looked, but also sounded a lot like Axel Rose, a really tight band and fun to watch. They may have lost some points for swearing their way through the set though!

Experienced (photo - Paul Murphy)

The River Raid from Brasil
The MC read out these guys achievements and it seemed as though they’ve won almost everything possible, awards for their music, lyrics and performances, playing with International touring acts etc. Chris B & I were asking each other how a band that’s done so well could not be signed? And then they started to play and we realised why. They sounded like every other alt rock band coming out of the US. No big hooks, nothing different to make you go wow. After half a song we were both a little bored!

The River Raid (photo - Paul Murphy)

Voodoo Vanity from Norway
These guys were a crowd favourite! High energy rock’n'roll with a glam rock twist. The boys were all looking extremely feminine with their long hair and eye makeup. They seemed to have a lot of fans amongst the local girls, but obviously not the older male judges.

Voodoo Vanity (photo - Paul Murphy)

Scarlletta from United Kingdom
Sorry, Scarletta are really not my thing, but I heard others in the crowd saying they liked them though – so each to their own! The lead singer looked like Lady Gaga and sang like Lily Allen, if you like pop-rock then check them out.

Scarletta (photo - Bjorn E Melbye, GBoB website)

Magua from Ukraine
Magua were in Chris B’s top three. A three-piece consisting of a drummer, a guitarist and a green faced bass/singer/harmonica player! I thought the harmonica was a good idea, definitely something different, but it just didn’t seem to fit with the music. Another band I want to hear more from!

Magua (photo - Maikel Liem)

Luminasion from Thailand
These guys drew the short straw and were up first (well, after Rustic!) They were ok, good performers, included a cool piano guitar. The lead guitarist stole the show for them after a small technical hitch with his guitar in between songs. He’s supposedly the top guitarist in Thailand.

Luminasion (photo - Paul Murphy)

The Tillegra Damned from Australia
I liked these guys a lot! They were in my top three just from their track on the website alone. Chatting with the drummer afterwards I was surprized to find out they’ve only been together since July and their first live show was the GBoB heat! I loved that they have a classical pianist as part of their punk act, it was just a shame that the sound on his mic and keyboard weren’t up a little higher as he got a little drowned out by the rest of the band.

The Tillegra Damned (photo - Bjorn E Melbye, GBoB website)

ExNN from Moldova
The lead singer Gala grabbed everyone’s attention when she walked out in a gorgeous corset, long skirt and purple velvet sleeves. From where I was standing her mic was too quiet so we couldn’t hear the power of her voice. Listening to the tracks on the GBoB website she has a very Amy Lee-esque sound which would have been great to hear live.

ExNN (photo - Paul Murphy)

Bombers from Malaysia
Hometown boys Bombers put on a fun set! Musically they’re not my thing, but they interacted amazingly with the crowd and the lead singer is a pretty good break dancer! They were one of the few bands to sing in their own language Malay instead of English. I thought they had a chance to win based on being the local boys and their awesome personalities on and off stage, but unfortunately the judges didn’t think the same.

Bombers (photo - Paul Murphy)

Strangers from Indonesia
I missed these guys as well – (it was a looong night!) From what I heard from others, like the other bands deserving to win their national finals, but not up there in terms of winning the world final. Although they seem to have a huge following on Twitter saying they were the best on the night!

Strangerz (photo - Paul Murphy)

And then comes THE BAD

The MCs – both locals, Rina Omar & Steven Northcott. Rena spoke at full speed with a really high pitched voice making it almost impossible for the bands who didn’t speak English as their first language to understand her. The post-set interview with Moldovan band ExNN being the worst in which she got faster and faster with each question and left the band looking at each other wondering what she was saying. Even I was struggling to understand her at points.

The MCs (photo - Rentak Sejuta)

Steven had one of those annoying American sports calling accents. He was in charge over introducing each band and was making it sound like he was introducing boxers at a prize fight – “The red corner from Brasil we have The River Raid, with 5 award wins … ” Highlight of the night - when JS started introducing AIS himself, Steven gave up and told him to keep going because he was doing it better!

The judges (photo - Paul Murphy)

The judges – there were four judges, Geir Waade, Kee Marcello (from 80′s band Europe), Gerry Helders & GBOB CEO Tore Lande. I stood beside them at one point and all four of them looked bored and disinterested in what they were listening to.
But what were they thinking, well, no-one knows! When they announced the 5 runners up and winner there was no explanation at all of why these bands won, they basically just stood there and read out 6 band names. And they were 6 bands that the crowd didn’t expect to hear, so there was a lot of jaws dropping as the names were read out.

Just before the results were announced Kee Marcello was joined on stage by some local musicians for a rendition of Europe’s 1986 hit song “The Final Countdown“.

Kee Marcello (photo - Maikel Liem)

Last but not least THE UGLY

The venue – have a look at it, it appears to be a construction site and it is! Not easy to find, and when you do find it, not easy to work out how to get inside. The show was supposed to start at 7, but we were stuck outside in the hot sticky Malaysian air until just before 8.

The Venue (photo - Paul Murphy)

The bar prices - at RB10 (RMB22) for a plastic cup of beer or (fake?) chivas & coke it was overpriced! But the bar staff were friendly & spoke Chinese which helps when you forget where you are and ask for “liang bei pijiu“!

The sponsorship – The event was sponsored by a company called Elevate, but nowhere was it mentioned what Elevate was. Everyone HAD to fill in a form to get into the venue: name, phone, address, ID or passport (WTF?) and answer two questions – are you a smoker and what are your two favourite brands of cigarettes. No form, no entry, and no explanation of what they wanted this information for! I actually assumed Elevate might have been something to do with quitting smoking at that point.
The whole way through the show the MCs were saying “Find the girls in blue and buy something from them for RM8 – you’ll get into the VIP area and an entry on the draw to win one of 3 guitars” At no time did they mention what the girls in blue were selling – Elevate cigarettes! Encouraging people to buy cigarettes to win a guitar in my opinion (even as a smoker) is just plain ugly!

But to end on a good note

I’m gonna go back to the music – it was great, in my opinon there were no losers, all 17 bands really did play their hearts out and they all deserved to be there. Especially our China representatives Amazing Insurance Salesmen, they did Beijing and China proud! While they might not have been exactly what the judges were looking for they gained many new fans outside of China and that can only lead to more international recognition for them and all the hard work they’re put in over the last year. Good news for us is that they’re also ready to release an EP very soon, so we can welcome them home by coming out to support them and buy their amazing debut album.

And there was also a rumour running around that next year’s GBoB Final will be in BD’s hometown Casablanca, Morocco!

I think by now, most people are aware that Santacon Beijing took place over the weekend on saturday! Yours truly took part in it and spent most of the day busing around Beijing with a merry group of locals and expats having fun and enjoying a beautiful Beijing day.

There are some really good accounts of the event so I don’t need to go over that again. Read all about it over at:
Beijing Boyce: http://www.beijingboyce.com/2010/12/13/beijing-santacon-diary-with-mulled-wine-christmas-carols-a-tiananmen-scuffle-and-more/
Jonah Kessel: http://blog.jonahkessel.com/2010/12/12/santarchy/

Sadly however, some media organizations chose to focus on the negative with headlines about Chinese security kicking Santas off the square:

AFP: http://www.zigonet.com/no%EBl/les-peres-noel-vires-de-la-place-tiananmen_art18182.html
Spiegel: http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/gesellschaft/0,1518,734449,00.html
Global Times: http://beijing.globaltimes.cn/society/2010-12/601197.html

I was there and it didn’t go that way!!! When we first arrived to the square, security was definitely aware of our impeding arrival! They had English speaking guards who were extremely polite directing traffic and asking all the santas to gather in one spot for a picture. There was absolutely nothing bad about their attitude or behavior.. until…

One particular photographer who was following the group of Santas decided to get in the face of a guard and start a confrontation. The guard politely asked him to put his camera away but the photographer kept screaming and displaying the kinda of attitude that was not welcome or needed at such a gathering.
Said photographer had made himself noticed earlier when going through security by constantly banging on the X Ray machine and screaming “come on” as he seemed annoyed that it took a while to get through.

One of Santacons’ basic principles is “don’t be a dick” and this gentleman was one hell of a dick! As a media member, he SHOULD observe and stay out of the way, not provoke headlines. From my perspective, that what he was after!

After he got in a shoving match with the guard resulting in said guard falling down, all bets were off! Security was polite and firm in asking us to please leave the square and you can’t blame them. As a group, we were clearly in breach of Chinese law with an unnaproved public gathering and no identifications in most cases. He was taken away and released a few hours later according to Beijing Boyce. Other photographers had absolutely no problem and got their pictures just fine.

I take offense at media members seeking more sensationalism and I take an even bigger offense at members of the media provoking the news…. it’s stupid, uncalled for and will definitely result in negative repercussions for upcoming Santacons.

The rest of the day was fun and very much in the spirit of santacon… I’m looking forward to next year and hope that one douchebag didn’t ruin it for the rest of us.

In case you’ve missed out on the action last year or you have no clue as to what I’m talking about, please refer to The Official Beijing Santacon Website.
Santa has been a busy old bugger this year preparing many surprises for those that have been good and having a few Aces up his sleeves in regards to the naughty ones! See his interview with Beijing Boyce for some of his favorite pit stops ( reindeer must be allowed).

This past saturday December 19th 2009, the streets of Beijing witnessed a folly that left many a local scratching their head: some hundred odd people donning Santa outfits roaming around the streets and bars smiling, dancing, singing and drinking: Santacon Beijing ’09. I tried keeping a rolling blog of the event but a dead battery got in the way that day. Here is the whole story:

Festivities on the East side of town started at noon in Shuanjing’s “The Brick”, a newly opened bar in the are. A dozen people or so turned up for this first step and got ready with coffee, hot cocoa w/ peppermint shnapps and some pub grub. Big props to the Brick for welcoming the Santa crew.

At 1:00 p.m. The Other Red Army started their march towards Tiananmen by subway. There were two exchanges to deal with during that journey: first at Guomao from Line 10 to Line 1 and then Jiangguomen from line 1 to line 2. During the commute, Santas tried their best to spread the cheers and give fellow subway riders something to smile about by singing christmas carols, waving and shouting out ho-ho-hos.

around 1:45, the east side santas arrived at Tiananmen hoping to meet up with the west side crew. We learned that they were still up in wudaokou and were less than thrilled. The square was cold and we were not looking forward to just waiting around until the “Lazy” Santas got their act together. That said we picked up a few more members of the red army there and still walked around taking pictures with strangers. At some point, the local authorities jumped in wondering what the hell we were all about and what we were doing there. A brief little explanation was in order and they left us alone after that but we were never out of their sight.

first time at Tian An Men -- Where's the freaking Haidian crew?

We started experiencing what Guns n Roses would refer to as a failure to communicate with our west-based counterpart at that point and decided to look for shelter and refreshments. after a brief walk through the Hutongs, Rudolph decided to stop at the Qianmen Hostel where we caught up on tweets, calls, beers and coffee.

Finally, word was passed around that various people in red garbs were seen roaming around the square. We were still unable to contact them but we decided to check it out and give the meetup one last time before heading to GuLou.

there was no chemine ... front door was the only option

and convergence there was! Glorious convergence with dozens of mini-groups all heading towards the flab pole directly across the Chairman’s portrait.

finally, they showed up! peace is restored!!!

It’s really difficult to describe what it felt like being there in the middle of a history-laden square seeing more and more Santas arrive and being surrounded by a mob of amused, happy and afraid locals all in one. At some point, it felt like that scene in Lord of the Rings where the Orcs surrounded the Fellowship of the Ring at the doors of Mordor. In this case, more worrisome than the mob of tourists wanting pictures was the 3 vans of security slowly driving around the area. I can only imagine the commotion going through their CV radios wondering WTF was happening and when/if to intervene.

Finally, the word was given and The Other Red Army started scattering away towards the next stop which was the Drum and Bell Bar in Gulou. Getting enough reindeers to handle all of us from Tian An Men proved to be a slight challenge but nevertheless, everyone made it.

The rest of The Other Red Army’s perils through town went more or less as scripted with copious amounts of refreshments, food, debauchery and camaraderie with pit stops at Salud in Nan Luo Guxiang, Paddy of Shea’s in Dongzhimen, FUBAR in Gongti and ended at White Rabbit in Sanlitun.

that's a lot of notches on the hat Santa

there's a distinct lack of elves

Big props to the organizers for going through all the trouble to make this event happen despite all the potential trouble and difficulties. Also big props to Beijing Boyce for keeping the general public informed of The Other Red Army’s whereabouts. Last but not least, big props to Salud, Paddy O Shea’s, FUBAR and White Rabbit for the discounts and hospitality.

It was my first SantaCon ever and hopefully not my last one!

So I was minding my own business last night, sipping on hot cocoa when there was a knock at my window. I turned around and saw this angel face looking from the outside: Santa was right up there floating outside my 21st floor window! W00t w00t, Santa answered the call for the interview to tell us about Santacon in Beijing this saturday December 19th

1- What’s going on in your world? This is your chance to plug your stuff:
It’s crunch time in the North Pole, but we still have the energy to throw down for SantaCon, our holiday party this Saturday.

2- How are the preparations going for Christmas? Are the elf managing to get all the gifts ready?
I have been checking the nice and naughty lists, the elves have been working overtime wrapping gifts, the reindeer have been strength training the past few months (we expect the sleigh full of gifts to be especially heavy this year). We’re all busy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Santa and Friend in NYC last year. Pic courtesy of Santa

3- Talking about gifts and naughty people.. How do they get on the list and how do they get off of it? More
importantly, where do I stand?
Everyone is on The List — whether you’ve been a good or bad this year decides where you place on the List and how
you’re rewarded. I think you already know where you fall on The List.

4- How is SantaCon 2009 in Beijing Shaping up? any theme this year?
My colleagues and I have invested many hours exploring potential stops for Beijing SantaCon. Based on our thorough research, we’ve finalized the route which will take us to famous attractions, bars and not so famous bars across over Beijing. This year’s theme: leave no Santa behind.

5- a little birdie told me that you have been all over town scouting pitstops for the elves and the reindeers! Any special surprises planned?
Maybe.

6- With your busy schedule, I assume you don’t make it to Beijing much over the year. When you are finally here, what’s your favorite activity/hideout?
We don’t get many bands stopping by the North Pole on their tours, so I like to check out live music when I’m in town. 2 Kolegas holds a special place in my heart. The Apothecary on a weekday night is a relaxing place to sip a cocktail and catch up with your colleagues. My elven drinking buddies and I are partial to their Dark and Stormy.

7- Word association: write the first word that comes to your mind.

* Beijing: duck
* Shanghai: xiaolongbao
* Baijiu: uh-oh
* Rudolph: snarky
* Grinch: misunderstood
* Hutongs: parking
* Polka dots: candy

will the real Santa please stand up, please stand up. Pic courtesy of Santa

8- Santa, you strike me as a bon-vivant with an appreciation for good eats! Would you please share with me 3 restaurants in Beijing that are definitely NOT on the naughty list?
Chuan Ban consistently delivers a tasty and satisfying Sichuan eats. When I don’t mind waiting in line, I check out Middle 8th for my Yunnan fix. Those Korean BBQ restaurants up in Haidian serve pretty tasty food — got a little tipsy on soju and charred meat when I was last there.

9- What are the details for SantaCon ? where can people find you and your elves? Is taking part in Santacon a
good way to get off the naughty list?
SantaCon kicks off this Saturday at noon from two bars: Lush in Wudaokou and THE Brick in Shuangjing, which are located at opposite ends of the city. Beijingers can choose the one closest to them. We’ll be converging routes later in the day so everyone can spread goodwill and cheer together. While SantaCon won’t guarantee that you’ll be bumped to the nice side of The List, it can’t hurt.

10- What does Santa want for christmas?
World peace. And less snarky reindeer.

Thanks Santa for taking the time to answer our questions and i hope you liked the cookies! that said, you could have left me some :p

Halloween, That one time a year where one can let the inner freak out and I love it for that. I don’t really care about the historical background, the pagan heritage or whatsoever… I just love getting dressed up and having fun!
Over the last few years, this little tradition has been fully and wholly embraced by Beijing! As Beijing Boyce pointed out once, it might be easier to write down a list of places that do not have halloween parties than to keep track of all the establishments celebrating it. And thankfully, it’s not all about gore and horror!

A halloween in Beijing brings out all kinds of personalities and mostly on the kinky side of things! The Yen Fetish party is a crowd favorite and frequented by locals and foreigners alike with a tendency for risque outfits. The party came alive around midnight despite being out in 798 area

sexxxy cats at YEN's fetish party

Other places, like Scarlett in Hotel G, ran low key classy affairs that were a moderate success despite some bad planning. Note to management: If you’re gonna feature a special all night, make sure it’s available first! Unfortunately, their little shindig quieted down by 11:00 p.m

Miranda, Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Mr. Big descend on Beijing

However, the clear winner of the night was TUN! The place was jam packed from midnight until the wee hours of the morning with drinks flowing, people dancing and just overall incredible energy. The crowd was diverse and wild in all the good ways possible and it never reached the madness that can be TUN on a friday night. Hats off the the staff and management for doing a great job and big hand to the DJ who kept the crowd dancing for hours at a time. Joyful mayhem it was
