The Man Behind The Lager: An interview with Chad Lager

As a customer in Beijing, I find myself feeling ripped off more often than I like when heading to so-called “western” bars and restaurants. High prices and below par service with various excuses… you know what I mean if you’ve lived here for any length of time.
Chad Lager is setting out to change that with FUBAR (map), his new speakeasy hidden in the confines of Beijing’s Worked Stadium! By improving the quality of the alcohol, service and keeping the Prices reasonable, he’s starting what I hope will be a trend in Beijing.
FUBAR (map) has become my new local and I find myself there more often than not having a drink and a hot dog a couple of times a week. Oh! did I mention that they have Strongbow on the Ice Tap???? Hell Yeah!!!
Let’s meet the man behind the Lager:

Chad Lager: The Buddha of Beijing's Bar Scene

Chad Lager: The Buddha of Beijing's Bar Scene

1- What’s going on in your world? This is your chance to plug your stuff:

My world? Always too much, everything from opening Stadium Dog/ Fubar to getting married, to showing my mom around China for her visit. Very exciting times to say the least.

As a plug though , because of the 60th we will be shut down Sept. 15th till Oct 8th…………

With a big Re launch Party on the 9th, but we are open from sept 8th till sept 15th………..come in and share a drink at HH prices 20 rmb mixers and 25 rmb stellas

2- when did you come to China and why? did you ever think you’d end up staying this long?

My first visit was March 2004, for a 10 day vacation, I was suppose to meet my ex-wife’s father on one of his business trips but he got pulled from the trip at the last minute. So i wandered around Beijing for 10 days by myself, to scared to ride the subways or buses i walked everywhere. Even got ripped off in the Forbidden City gift shop to the tune of 2000 rmb, the purchases included a chop and some tea.

My second visit came in March 2005, I just went through a pretty rough divorce and wanted to escape my small hometown of Gunnison, CO . 7000+ people. I figured what the heck I will sign up for a 3 month language program and now I have been here for almost 6 years.

3- So, the Lager-man got hitched!!! how did that come about and what do you say to all the brokenhearted ladies left disappointed that you’re no longer Beijing’s most eligible bachelor?

Wow, I wish I someone would have told me I was Beijings most eligible bachelor…………I had no idea. Thats news to me. Funny thing is I have never been hit on at the bars I have run, and if I was, I was to stupid to realize it.

4- what’s your favorite mixed drink?

Gin and Tonic………….a FUBAR Gin and Tonic

    5- Fill in the blanks:

It’s 4:00 pm on a sunny day, Chad is most likely ___taking a nap_____ at ___home_____ .

It’s 4:00 pm on a rainy day, Chad is most likely __taking a nap_______ at ____home____ .

It’s 3:00 a.m. and you’re not at FUBAR or at home, you’re most likely ____in trouble____ and should be getting home before the wife kills me__________ .

6- What’s the biggest misconception about Chad Lager?

That I have a great social life or my life is one big party………….It s work work work, I just get to enjoy a beer while I do it

    7- Word association:

    • Beijing: The Biggest Small Town in the World , Real People / Real Fun
    • Shanghai: I get to angry when I visit there, so, let’s not bring the subject up
    • sanitun: dirty dirty fun
    • chuan’r: Oh meat on a stick………..I love you
    • baijiu: Trowing up out 20th story window

8- If you weren’t in Beijing doing the things you do, where would you be and what would you be doing?

Will never happen, might as well bury me in Tianamen Ass up

9: Name 3 high points of your life in Beijing and 3 low points.

To be quite honest, the low points just don’t come around for me. Minor roadblocks or setbacks thats all. My Highs have been to many to count, My Wife, My friends, every bar ive worked with or for. Fubar is up there also………

10: You’re handcuffed in the back of a police car, what would be the most likely reason?

Im Drunk and I thought it would be a good idea to discuss philosophy with shitty broken chinese

Thanks to Chad for taking the time to answer a few questions and congratulations on the new venture as well as the marriage! Go down to FUBAR (map) and say “Hi”, he’s one of the funniest characters you’ll ever meet.
