the big expected gig of the week would have been the Dongpai Folk Festival at 2 KOlegas but if you’re read the site yesterday, you know that it is pretty much dead in the water. I got to hear various versions/reasons for the cancellation but none of them really makes sense at this point. Either ways, it’s fucked! Still, there’s a number of cool little gigs around town starting tonight. Let’s see what the consolation prizes are: Thursday May 9: Coprocephalic @ 2 Kolegas Death Metal from California/Taipei… that’s how these kids are being labeled and it sounds intriguing enough. In pure 2K tradition, we know nothing about the gig or the band other than they’ve been around since 2011. Options are scarce enough that this makes an appearance on the slants for a thursday. Punk @ XP: Discord along with Flyx, Brother Tough and Found Amber are headed to the west side of town for a mohawk night at XP. Nothing out of this world but surely a decent enough option for those craving a little 2 to 3 chord action with badly tuned instruments but fun nevertheless. Friday May 10: The Randy Abel Stable/Shun Kikuta @ CD Blues Probably the best show from this series of Blues Festival when Beijing’s resident Americana hellraisers pair up with one of Japan’s more prolific guitar players for a night of good mellow tunes. If you were looking for an excuse to head over there, this is the best night. Just remember [...]
There’s a lingering feeling that most of us are suffering from post-festival apathy.. too much music, too little time and tons of other obligations. Still, no rest for the wicked and things are moving on for the weekend. Let’s see what’s kicking, shortslants style Thursday May 10: The Stanleys, another Your Town Touring band, hits Mao live with help from 16mn, Perpetual motion Machine and Summer Sunshine. It’s an interesting little combo of power pop punk that might work out as a good transition for the weekend. Flau Night at 2 Kolegas: This Japanese experimental label has been earning rave praise day in day out with their artists. It could be an interesting evening. Flau’s owner, aus (Yasuhiko Fukuzono) will perform, together with two other Flau artists, Cokiyu and Cuushe. It shhould be good but then again, remember, I have no understanding of electronic experimental stuff. Friday May 11 Jungle Mico celebrates their one year anniversary at 2 Kolegas. They’ve steadily built up one hell of a reputation in Beijing combining instruments and beats for some interesting sounds. They have impressed a lot of people and i want to be next! Juratt & Mamer come to Zajia Labs for a little up-close acoustic session. They used to hold these as a background to folks sipping on a single malt at Amilal. Zajia is intimate enough for them to pull off something interesting and magical. Expect more melodies and folk than industrial rock. Hot Cat is putting on a Bob Marley [...]
Beijingdaze Note: I really wanted to make it out to Shunyi this year for this little festival.. but a 7:00 a.m return home from the first day of 2 Kolegas anniversary bash somehow got in my way. I’m glad however that good friend and banjo player extraordinaire, Peter Schloss, was able and willing to send in his review! By: Peter Schloss Standing in the courtyard of Pomme O’Shea’s as the curtains closed on the 7th Annual Rynostock Music Festival, my wingman (and attorney) casually asked, “Do you think anyone knows what they’re missing by not being here?” As BeijingDaze had not made his oft talked about, but never actually experienced, trek to Beijing’s Northeastern suburbs, I surmised that unfortunately Beijing’s music scenesters wouldn’t be able to know how good this Festival had become unless they had been there to see for themselves. You can understand my excitement then when my phone rang early Sunday morning and I was asked by the Man himself if I would “guest blog” about Rynostock*. Imagining myself as a modern-day Lester Bangs, I jumped at the chance for fame and fortune and began organizing the voluminous notes I had luckily taken throughout Saturday. So, without further ado, I give you a Rynostock Running Diary. 4:00pm: Bad Apples, the band from the International School of Beijing (not to be confused with the long-time fixtures on the Beijing music scene with the same name), get things started on the outdoor stage and puts on a courageous show [...]
2 Kolegas is getting a lot of the spotlight this weekend but they’re not the only game in town! The good folks over in suburbia, aka expat housewives-land, better known as shunyi, get their own rockfest: Rynostock I believe they’re in their 5th year with the 2011 edition set for Saturday May 28 at Pomme O’Shea ( Formerly knows as the Pomegranate) with the festivities debuting around noon with BBQ, games and of course, lots of music: Amongst the bands listed: Beijing Beatles Ryan Kester & co Bad Apples End of the World Berlin Mummies Maggie Who Big Metal Door The Randy Abel Stable Zuo Gao Su Out of Control feat. Ann Maire And many more. According to google maps, The Pomme O’Shea is 16km from 2 kolegas. I’ve done the trek to D-22 before and that was 22km so I’m gonna dare do this one… perfect afternoon before coming back into town for extra debauchery Find the Pomme O’Shea on The Beijinger http://www.thebeijinger.com/directory/Pomme-OSheas here’s to Rock n Roll
