well, to celebrate a fake weekend, what better that a few music videos to distract your from your pretend work in the office? I like that bands are getting into them again and discovering the value of a good MV as a promotion tool. So, what’s on the dazeTUBE? Dawangang: Good old Song Yun Zhe has been busy cooperating with tons of people over the past year but he did find some time to get a new record released for his band, Da Wang Gang. The lead single from the album is 四条道 sìtiáo dào. A nice little Folky number that mixes tons of influences and, much like SOng Yun Zhe himself, sharp and dark.. http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjY4ODk3Mjcy.html Dawanggang is currently touring China in support of their latest release but expect them back in Beijing soonish. Xie Tian Xiao: Remember that hyped up gig at the Worker’s Gym? well, apparently, it was good enough! heck, some people are saying it was amazing. Video is slowly leaking out and the latest one, which is pretty well produced, is of the lead single from Illusion: 把夜晚染黑 http://www.letv.com/ptv/vplay/1964466.html I really didn’t like this at first but i’m very much digging it nowadays. Casino Demon The on-off supergroup is really having fun these days. THey released an decent EP, went on tour and they are playing regularly which is a great thing. I Mean it’s still pretty much an offshoot of the Dancers IMHO but who cares what it’s called? Here is their video for 童年 [...]

Are you ready for May festival madness? i’ll be honest with ya: I’m not but though luck and tough SOB bronchitis. That said, i’ll make it there one way or the other. Still, we got a few days to gear up for things and some of the shows are pretty darn kickass starting tonight. Let’s see what’s on the program pre-holidays. On another note, what kind of fucking messed up holiday is this? working sat/sun to get monday/tuesday off?? gimme a fucking break. Wednesday Apr 24th Obituary @ Yugong Yishan yes, that Obituary. the one one that gave your parents nightmares and helped you grow horns as a teenager. The kind folks from Painkiller Mag have brought them over and they are invading the Yugong Yishan pit tonight starting at 8:00 pm. There are still tickets to be had at the door so do not hesitate.. it will be massive. Ready to Die and Deathpact will be on opening duties. Note that the band will be playing a retro set and sticking to the classics, playing only hits from their 1989-1992 arsenal. Funky & Friends @ Blue Stream if you read my review on Funky’s improvised gig at 2 KOlegas a few weeks ago, you know i had tons of fun and would absolutely recommend heading over there to see the king of Drums rocking along his friends. The intimate nature of Blue Stream bar will make this a really cool party. So far, the only confirmation i got is [...]

long time no quickslants… well, maybe every post this week will start with “long time no..” I had a couple of weeks off just jetting around the old world and been running around like a chicken with its head cut off since i got back. Still, manage to make it to plenty of shows and I hope i’ll have reviews up soon enough. You can already get started with last friday’s gig review from the PK 14 gig at Yugong Yishan. So, what’s on the menu for the next few days? some intriguing and interesting options are available: Thursday Dec 6 WHAI + Chasing Star @ Yugong Yishan now this is a show where I’m open minded.. 2 bands with people i like and appreciate playing a genre of music i don’t usually care about. However, in this case, both bands do it well enough that i can’t help but like it. WHAI has changed a lot in a year and their last gig at 2K was apparently one of the best ever. I can’t wait to see how this change comes through in the music. As far as Chasing Star goes, it’s looking like they’re getting pretty serious about putting that record out finally. They sound nothing like that band i heard back in 2006, especially music wise, after they added so many electronic elements. I haven’t seen them play in over 2 years now so I’m curious about more potential changes. Tuleger @ Jianghu The artist formerly known [...]
i think they’re finally catching up here yonder about the power of promotion… Bands are putting out more Videos than they have in a long time and even the merch side of things is getting better. Here are a few to check out for upcoming releases: First up, Shanghai’s The Fever Machine who will be up in Beijing November 24th playing at Temple to celebrate the release of their new EP, La Chupacabra: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDcxNTMwMTE2.html I’m digging the record and will try to get a review up at some point if i can stop running around like a chicken with its head cut off. It’s sounding good though. Next is Da Bang.. Ruby is developing a liking for these cats who seem to be getting their act together after a weird period last year. The new tunes are poppy, electronic but seem more like “them” as opposed to last year’s stuff when it felt all fake. http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDcyNjE5NDA4.html Good buddies Lidong, fresh of a beautiful China tour, have also released a video. It’s a great little piece of visual poetry directed and filmed by the ever amicable Tofu… beautiful perspective on winter!! http://www.letv.com/ptv/vplay/1792690.html Finally, good old new Casino Demon (2/3rd of The Dancers/Joyride) are ready with their EP slatted to come out this month. Sure enough, to celebrate, they got themselves a video for the first single “The Sadness Will Last Forever”. http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDcxODUzNTYw.html just a couple of goodies… hopefully more on the way soon.
it might not seem like it but there is actually an interesting weekend coming up folks. I’ll keep it short and sweet for you all: Friday Nov 2 AIS @ Yugong Yishan The Amazing Insurance Salesmen are back at it with what’s becoming a monthly occurrence… i did this new rhythm of playing less shows and making their brand more special.. now let’s get some new songs in a CD and I’ll be a happy fan. Me Too are on opening duties. Buyi @ Jianghu The Ningxia quatuor heads over to Jianghu for one of their sit down performances. I saw them earlier this week at 2 Kolegas and they’re sounding a bit heavier than usual.. can’t say that’s a bad thing in my book. Saturday Nov 3 Trash till Death @ Club 13 out of the blue, CLub 13 reminds us that they’re still around with an interesting lineup going all day from 2 p.m. until midnight. The festivities are split into two parts. Part I: Putsch, Hellfire, Nine Treasures, Never Before, The Metaphor. Part II (8:30): Tractor, Los Crasher, Tengger Cavalry, Hellward, Explosicum. That is definitely a lot of bang for your buck Jacky Danny @ Hot Cat this might be one of those shows where the sound system at Hot Cat can be overlooked. Jacky Danny played their hearts out last week at Temple and i only heard good things about Executant of the Sword, the opening act. I wonder if Ricky Sixx is still on bass [...]
Hope you got some rest last weekend folks cause this upcoming one will require some serious stamina from all of you considering all the fun stuff taking place in Beijing over the next few days! so, what we got? Wednesday June 22nd: Misandao @ Mao: Misandao is tons of fun! I love these guys because they’re genuinely punk to the bone, skinhead bootboys that bring on the Oi punk like no one else. I just saw them last week at Mao and they have not lost a beat. Newcomers, The Rudeness, open things with their brand of ska/reggae/punk. Not a bad humpday gig Thursday June 23: Paper Tigre & RE-TROS @ Yugong Yishan: I couldn’t care less about papier tigre but any opportunity to watch the RE-TROS should be cherished.. these cats perform with such amazing passion. Label them whatever you want, they put on a show each and everytime that cannot leave you indifferent. Ember & Jess @ 2Kolegas: Take Ember Swift with her folk pop and the Laowai Song, Jess Meider’s Heavenly Stems and you got yourself a lovely night of lilith fair type music to sooth you soul by. Friday June 24th: Beijing Prom @ The Bookworm: This one is so bizarre that it deserves a mention. Our good friend the Prom Queen has decided to go back in time and party like it was 1990 for those that remember the era. You’re expected to dress for Prom, with heavy emphasis on sequins, then mingle with likeminded [...]
