Rock School: Cui Jian’s Yi Wu Suo You Dissected.

    yiwusuoyou

I’ve been meaning to get this new blog series for a while now and never really found the time. Many a time I caught myself at a KTV wanting to sing some cool rock n roll song in Chinese and found out that I only knew the chorus most of the time. Forget about the rest of the lyrics and even the characters!! Just no way in hell. Come the 12 week challenge that my danwei has embarked on! I’ve picked “improve my Chinese” as my challenge for the next 12 weeks and I intend to do it through Classic Chinese rock n roll songs or songs that I think do matter! This should culminate in a massive KTV session after this when I sing every single one of them. Now, being a huge KTV fan, I’ve always eyed some classic songs that were on there and know more or less what to expect. I could go with XTX, Dou Wei, Tang Dynasty and so many more… but if one is gonna start studying Chinese through Rock, there is only one valid starting point: The song that started it all!! It was only logical that Cui Jian’s Yi Wu Suo You 一无所有 was the first song featured in this series that I hope will extend beyond 12 weeks with the premise of studying one new song a week, thus learning the characters and the meaning. This particular song has been talked about for so long that I’ll spare you the [...]

Quickslants: Apocalypse Saturday with Suyang, Cui Jian, DaBang and More….

    fof

Beijing, i love you! Beijing, I fucking hate your guts for weekends like this one: couldn’t you spread these gigs over the month instead of putting them all in one freaking day? I want to see them all damn it! If you don’t get my rant, read on and see why i’m ticked off that there is so much on offer over the next 3 days: Friday Dec 14 Friend or Foe @ 2Kolegas The Shanghai trio is back in town promoting a remixed version of last year’s album and they’re calling it appropriately: “what have you done with my claw”.. To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the remix but i do love the band’s live stage and had tons of fun with them last time they played the drive-in. Joining them tonight you’ll find Devils at the Crossroad, Residence A along with Thruoutin. I predict fun fun fun fun. Tookoo & The Reason @ School what? school has live music? yep, since last week, the bar has been reborn as a live music venue and that’s long overdue. They’re set for their musical onslaught with a double album release night from two pretty good bands. It’s bound to get interesting over at wudaoying hutong. Saturday Dec 15 Cui Jian @ Wukesong The godfother is back and he’s ticked off according to his latest interview on timeout. He’s still cursing with the best of them and still pissed off enough at society. Can we get a new [...]

Mayday Musical Mayhem: Picks and Guide to Beijing Music Festival 2012

I’m not buying this whole bullshit about the market being big enough for the onslaught of music festivals we’re getting over the next few days. It’s splitting and diluting the market, and in many cases, they are cannibalizing each other. Still, it’s too late to do anything about it so let’s try to deal with it! You can get the listings just about anywhere now and it’s recommended you keep checking because stuff changes all the time. News that Mos Def was replaced by He Yong just came down.. Below you’ll find a mini round out of it all with my picks… May 1 belongs to Strawberry on the strength of XTX playing. It’s been too long since i’ve actually seen him kick some rock n roll booty! April 30 is Folk Festival day to catch good old Shanren play next to the house. Which leave us with MIDI on April 29.. I already planned for MIDI day 1 before Cui Jian was announced so for me, it’s like an icing on the cake. 2012 Strawberry Music Festival – Tongzhou Canal Park from 4/29 to 5/1 Strawberry goes back to Tongzhou Canal Park after some initial speculation that they might not make it there. This year, they have bar none the best lineup as far as foreign and local bands alike. They’ve pretty much managed to sign everyone to play over the three days and they mean business. This year, they have spent a lot of time trying to get [...]

Cui Jian added to MIDI, New Records from Hedgehog, Nova Heart, Mamer, LiDong, Bad Mamasan and more

Some random news coming around today.. The reclusive Zhang Chu,originally scheduled to headline MIDI day 1 on April 29, has some emergency. None other than Cui Jian, the godfather of Chinese rock, is replacing him on the bill! That’s a pretty good deal in my book! Granted, it might increase the security concerns in Shunyi. On the new release front, there is a shitload coming up: Hedgehog has a new one out already but the official Beijing release will be in June. Sun Fun Gun is hailed so far as a return to the source for the trio… I’m still taking it for a spin so expect a review sometime soon on the site. Nova Heart, fresh from touring around the world, is putting out their first EP this Friday at Yugong Yishan. I’m gonna see if i can actually get my hands on it beforehand because i’m really curious! I’ve heard them plenty of times and it’s always been different! How will the recording fare without the captivating presence of Helen? I’ve covered Mamer in a post not too long ago and I hear from Ruby that at least one of his new records is already available at C Rock. We’ve covered Lidong for years on the blog and been hoping that they’d get those demos packaged for a final release… it’s done baby! Li Xia and the gang have put the final touches on it and we’re looking at May 19th as the date this baby will be [...]

Quickslants: Mongolian Festival, Intercity Festival, Hell’Bone Night, Lulu Galore and more

This is the kind of weekend that hurts my head in terms of picking where to go… so many good shows, so little time and I wanna see them all.. yes my precious, I want them all! Mongolian Music Festival at Mako, Pilot Records Intercity Festival in Chaoyang Park, Black Cat Bone w/ DH & The Hellcats ( aka Hell’Bone) just to name a few! Let’s snap to it! Thursday Sept 8 Gou Mao @ Jianghu I’ve never heard of the guy but he’s got a couple of CDs to his name and the stuff on Douban sounds pretty darn good. Acoustic rock with earthy vibes and a slight heavy edge. Plus, I’m thinking I ain’t been to Jianghu in a little while. Definitely an interesting option Friday Sept 9 Mongolian Festival day 1 @ Mako Yes folks, this is taking place at Mako Livehouse in Shuangjing who is making a strong comeback over the past few weeks as a premier live music venue. Headlining Day 1 of the festival is old Friends Hanggai along with rockers Thin Man whose lead singer, Dai Qin is also Mongolian. Shaman Humai, one of the first bands on, seems quite interesting. it should be fun! Miss Lulu Galore @ Alanting Yes, Lulu Galore, of the Burlesque Group fame, is launching her solo dance and music project with this debut performance at Alanting in Sanlitun South.. to put it in her own words: ” Miss Lulu Galore and Sweet Leaf is her latest music [...]

Beijing Intercity Festival 2011: Cui Jian, BRMC, Pretty Reckless, Biohazard, Second Hand Rose and More

Pilot Records is doing it again folks!! After bringing Ill Nino and Trail of Dead last year to supplement their stable of excellent local acts, the gave the nod to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Biohazard and Pretty Reckless to make the trip this year! Of course, the usual suspects are all here as well including Cui Jian, Miserable Faith, Second Hand Rose and more… This intercity thing is setting itself up as a worthy successor to the defunct and missed Chaoyang Pop Festival…. The Pretty REckless with Taylor Momsen is innofensive Barbie rock but most of the other acts are legit! Last year, plenty of drinks were available and catering was handled by Tim’s Texas BBQ… Here’s hoping it happens again! The final lineups and time slots were released earlier this week: Here ya go: A couple of interesting notes: Cui Jian is closing the thing again. I’m getting the impression that festival organizers have finally learned to put the biggest possible name on that slot otherwise everyone is pretty much gone. I’m sure Pretty Reckless will have a the biggest audience and Pilot Records is really pushing them on weibo. Miserable Faith is slotted at a surprising mid-afternoon appearance… that’s pretty darn weird to me! There is no mention of the “school stage” this year but unlike last year, there are 2 big stages with different headliners.. I like that! It’s gonna be one hell of a busy weekend with an inner-mongolian music fest at Mako and some other [...]

Quickslants: InMusic Festival, Blues, Mademoiselle, Randy Abel, Ill Nino and more

It’s that time of the week where we look ahead at the next few days and all the musical goodness they bring to us. There’s plenty of action in and out of town to keep everyone happy so without further delay, let’s kick it: Thursday July 28 Cranberries @ Wukesong Dolores and her gang visit Beijing and bring back memories of the mid nineties when they were one of the hippest most dedicated bands around. I’m not exactly sure what they’ve been up to over the past few years but I’m nevertheless looking forward to seeing them rock old smoggy with good crowd pleasers like Ode to my Family, Zombie, Animal Instinct and more. Randy Abel Stable @ Jianghu The self proclaimed (and rightfully so) Hardest Working Bluegrass Band in China takes over Jianghu for what promises to be an inspiring performance filled with blues, country, folk and Appalachian sonic goodness. The band has progressed tremendously since their debut a few months back and I’m sure hoping they capitalize on their chance to get a record started. Friday July 29: Mademoiselle @ Jianghu Yes, we’re still big fans of the Montreal Mynx over at ‘daze central. Marie-Claude and her gang deliver each and every time they play their brand of Gypsy folk-infused Jazz. She’s won over just about everyone that has gone to see her play and the CD was good. Still, maybe it’s time for some new tunes… as long as she keeps on singing “le grand mur”, I [...]

Year End Music Quickslants: Free Birds, SUBS, MIDI & The King will Rock You into 2011

Beijing’s music community is closing the year in style and starting things off with a bang. Some great shows are lined up for tonight, saturday and sunday, some of which can be considered must-see music.. let’s get this baby started: Friday Dec 31: MIDI Awards @ Star Live: The granddaddy of rocknroll awards in China is holding its second edition at the starlive with some of the better bands playing. Miserable Faith, Hanggai, Nanwu etc… are all on hands to entertain the crowd and hopefully collect a few awards. Audience is limited to 800 so check online if it’s not sold out yet. NYE @ 2 Kolegas: The drive in will be home to a gigantic party with Free The Birds, reTROS and one of my favorite newcomers to the scene, The Ghost Spardac. The party is probably gonna drag on til the wee hours of the morning especially with FTB’s Helen Feng hosting the MIDI awards before trekking over. very recommended. Cui Jian @ Worker’s Stadium: Steven Schwankert of City weekend called him “The King of F—-ing Everything” and i gotta agree. Whatever you think of him, Lao Cui has cemented his place is the annals of Chinese Rock. You’ll find him tonight joining the orchestra he started with for a greatest hits type of performance. He might be older but he hasn’t lost any of his swagger. Saturday Jan 1: SUBS & 24 Hours @ 2 Kolegas: There is just no freaking way in hell I am missing [...]

News to Ooze: Pangbianr, Cui Jian, AIDS benefit, Wu Kejia etc

A lot of things happening in around Beijing that have grabbed my attention recently.. here are a few tidbits: World’s AIDS day Benefit CD/Concert: Mark your calendars for December 3rd at Jianghu Jiu Ba where some good minded/meaning folks will be releasing a CD and holding a benefit concert for AIDS support and prevention. I’ll have a lot more on this project next week so keep an ear and an eye out and save the date… that is unless you’re planning to check out the Michael Learns to Rock show that night (which still has tons of tickets available) http://pangbianr.com/ If you haven’t done so yet, check out what the folks at Pangbianr are doing! Since coming unto the Beijing scene a few months ago, they’ve been all over the spectrum organizing shows at D-22, trying to get a Film-Music project going and generally bringing in awesome coverage of the Beijing arts/indie scene. Bookmark and add to your RSS feed reader, you might learn a thing or two! Josh is doing some great work and deserves support! Cui Jian back in Beijing: It might not mean what it used to but it’s still rare to get a full blown Cui Jian concert in the capital. He might have gotten a bit older but that doesn’t mean he can’t rock with the best of them. He’s got an upcoming 2 gigs at gongti for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day planned. Get details and tickets on piao.com Wu & The [...]

News to Ooze and music quickslants all in one: HOTB is back, ZIYO lineup and the Old guard

This week’s shows: Ok.. No real quickslants this week in music as all the good gigs seem to be happening on friday with one or two exceptions: Back to Basic at the worker’s stadium with the old guard that is uniting for the first time ever on the same bill with Cui Jian, Tang Dynasty, Black Panther etc..) or Zippo Hot List at Yugong yishan bringing one of the better lineups so far with Free The Birds ( ZIYO), The Face, Chasing Stars and Bigger Bang. gongti is mighty appealing and it’s a once in a lifetime lineup but the seating arrangements and security might just be too mafan to risk it. Zippo should be one hell of a show with high octane bands but I can always see them again! On Saturday, we might witness a rise from the ashes of none other than Hang on the Box… yes folks, Hang on the Box is “back” meaning Gia found a bunch of new girls to jump in with her and rock the boat. I hated her solo stuff but liked her Girl Kill Girl material.. let’s see what this incarnation brings. They’ll have help from non other than RUSTIC and The Dancers on saturday night at the Hot Cat Club… Random News Well, you see it up above, HOTB is back meaning Gia and a bunch of new hired guns! I don’t know the story but I’m sure we’ll find out soon. They band’s Douban page is updated with [...]
