sometimes, doing reviews of whole shows can be a bit repetitive but i always wanna give the devil his due.. so unless the show is mindblowing, i think i’m gonna switch to a new format of quick reviews called “p.s: You Rocked Me” and that’s starting right now.. MIDI was pretty darn good and enjoyable if you haven’t read my review yet but there were also a bunch of other little gigs around town that had me having a good good time: Abaji @ CD Blues | April 24th, 2013 My brother from another family, the one and only Abaji, descended on the capital for a quick little gig thanks to the Alliance Francaise who kinda forgot to inform people about it. Still, I tracked him down and went over to the new CD Blues for the first time.. and what a treat it was! The guy is still sheer genius and he had a packed venue under his charm. I got there a bit late and caught only the second part of the gig but it was one hell of a good one again Devils at the Crossroad album release @ Temple | April 27, 2013 man.. usually, a saturday night gig can be fun, but not when you’re supposed to work on one of those fake sundays thanks to the messed up Chinese holiday system. On the bright side, having to work the next day meant i couldn’t get trashed and forget how much fun i had. and [...]

Are you ready for May festival madness? i’ll be honest with ya: I’m not but though luck and tough SOB bronchitis. That said, i’ll make it there one way or the other. Still, we got a few days to gear up for things and some of the shows are pretty darn kickass starting tonight. Let’s see what’s on the program pre-holidays. On another note, what kind of fucking messed up holiday is this? working sat/sun to get monday/tuesday off?? gimme a fucking break. Wednesday Apr 24th Obituary @ Yugong Yishan yes, that Obituary. the one one that gave your parents nightmares and helped you grow horns as a teenager. The kind folks from Painkiller Mag have brought them over and they are invading the Yugong Yishan pit tonight starting at 8:00 pm. There are still tickets to be had at the door so do not hesitate.. it will be massive. Ready to Die and Deathpact will be on opening duties. Note that the band will be playing a retro set and sticking to the classics, playing only hits from their 1989-1992 arsenal. Funky & Friends @ Blue Stream if you read my review on Funky’s improvised gig at 2 KOlegas a few weeks ago, you know i had tons of fun and would absolutely recommend heading over there to see the king of Drums rocking along his friends. The intimate nature of Blue Stream bar will make this a really cool party. So far, the only confirmation i got is [...]

There’s a monster saturday ahead folks with some beautiful shows planned all around Beijing and the choices are really hard… What’s a man to do if he wants to check out 3 shows happening at the same time on different sides of town? From new releases to impact gigs, get ready for it. Thursday March 28 Jurat TT @ Yugong Yishan The new album is being dubbed as dark psychedelic faire tale folk and i guess my answer to that is: sure, why not? I like Juratt and his style is quite unique in Beijing.. I’ve listened to the new record for a bit lat week and some parts are indeed interesting. As if the release itself was not enough, Yangjima will be be on hand as a support act. Not a bad way to spend a thursday. Friday March 29 Yangjima @ Mako How about this folks? a double appearance for a venue the same day and for an artist 2 days in a row: How about an early dose of beautifully soothing harmonies courstesy of Yingema and friends at 1:00 pm at Mako? yeah, a 1pm gig on a saturday.. that is potentially a new way to do gigs.. really. Sorry.. this one is on saturday. Rock You @ 2 Kolegas Devils at the Crossroad, Nine Treasures and Incisors head over to the drive-in for a rock n roll fuelled night. Nine treasure is slowly but steadily making their name stand out and Devils should have a whole [...]

How you surviving the week y’all? With Jue kicking ass and taking names, it seems like the last 2 weeks have been a constant stream of live shows and music news and none of it is over yet. Way away from the mainstream, I was fortunate enough to catch some cool stuff this week with Japanese Drumming prodigy, Funky, organizing an impromptu music festival with some real y old school things that included a COBRA reunion… yeah, that Cobra.. but that’s all for another day. Let’s see what we should be looking forward to over the next few days: Fri Mar 22 Fangzui Xiangfa @ Temple This is my gig of the night. THe band was first brought to my attention by none other than J-curls and they kick ass. Old school hardcore punk that takes no prisoner. They’re coming off their first China tour in a while and have been putting on some kickass shows. Gumbleed and the Flyx will be on hand to provide some extra tunes. Acid Live/Wu Ning ye @ 2 Kolegas I saw these cats perform together about two months ago at Temple and it was kickass. They have developed such a chemistry since then with some of them even joining BUYi permanently. It’s a blast and tons of fun as they go through jazz, folk, blues seemingly. Definitely a good time. Wu Ning Ye almost seems happy these days as he smiles more on stage. Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls @ Mao Live [...]
here’s a toast to post titles that don’t mean jack shit.. because that’s really the case here. I couldn’t think of anything better that would encompass all the musical goodness that lies ahead over the next 5 days or so… yeah, this is a long edition of the quickslants due to a busy weekday set of great shows.. let’s kick it! Friday Oct. 26 Whai @ 2 Kolegas The ever evolving WHAI is turning 1… man the band has changed so much since i first spotted them. The sound is more complex, they have added a DJ and are now internationally travelled: they just came back from playing a festival in Korea. I still can’t quite define what they play other than experimental progressive folk fusion.. how is that for a mouthful? The lads have pushed hard on this gig and the weibo promotions are through the roof. I expect a lot of fun, drinking and playing around. Tuleger @ Jianghu Gangzi has changed his stage name to Tuleger, but his Inner Mongolian stylings are still the same. Tonight, he’s letting loose a new release: “I Am Mongol”… i haven’t had a chance to listen to the new record yet but I have no reason to think it won’t be good. He’s slowly but steadily following in the footsteps of Hanggai and Ajinai while retaining his own style. Saturday Oct. 27 hardest night for me to pick a gig.. really! so much good stuff out there: Rolling Stones Tribute @ [...]
wow.. another round of early quickslants after missing out on them last week. But seriously folks, it looks like all the venues are coming out of the october holidays with some kick ass gigs lined up from wednesday to sunday! In some cases, more than one “must-see” per night and i’m not about to complain about this. Let’s kick it Wednesday Oct. 10 Youth Night @ Mao Live Kick Ass, Emitter, Devils at the Crossroad and Longway get together for a heavy cover night. expect lotsa AC/DC, Guns n Roses, Motorhead and more with some of the better young bands in town.. actually, can i still call them young? I mean these kids have been around for a while and the beards on some of them almost qualify them as old timers. Meng Zhi album launch @ 2 Kolegas The gang at 2 K is actually excited about this gig and even though i’ve never heard of the person in question, i know better than to doubt their opinions by now. He’s been playing around Beijing for a few years now and he’s looking to break out with this “Folk 2012″ release Thursday October 11 Michael Dallin @ Temple probably still one of the more underrated performers in the capital, Michael is still going strong with his original songs may it be alongside Bad Apples or his other projects. this particular night, expect an eclectic jam probably with a few musicians jumping in to contribute. Goth NIght @ Mao Live [...]
recovered yet folks? I think yesterday’s little gig at 2 kolegas was my Hair of the Dog… Full of energy, ready to get back in the ring and dish out/take another swing. So, what’s up over the next few days? A heck of a lot! Of course, Football is still reigning supreme and determining what happens with Beijing Nightlife but Music is holding its ground and there’s some really intriguing stuff taking place. Let’s kick it! Thursday June 28th Make up Night @ Mao Live One of the most interesting events I’ve seen listed at Mao Livehouse in a long time. Gloomy Hymn of Darkness, Tenger Cavalry and other heavy bands come together to celebrate the inner freaks in each of us. I can’t figure out what Mao is doing with it in terms of charges but it looks like there’s some discounts for couples and folks are definitely encouraged to dress up. I’d be very excited to check out Tenger Cavalry that I referred to a few months ago. It’s looking like this previously-one-man-show is now a full fledged band specializing in melodic pagan metal. me likey!! Friday June 29th Ningxia Night @ 2 Kolegas do i really need to write more? Ningxia bands, Ningxia Friends, Ningxia Noodles and a heck of a lot of good times await those that make it to the drive-in. This particular edition features Buyi, Wu & The Side Effects, Whai and Lidong who might be pulling double duty friday night. Old School Rock [...]
