Summer is officially music season here y’all.. we’re looking at another busy weekend in old smoggy ( and boy is she smoggy this week) to try and distract us from all our weekly grind. It’s a rich and diverse one with tribute shows, metal galore ( and lulu galore) not to mention a whole bunch of ‘daze favorites stopping by… let’s get to it, shall we? Thursday July 5th Lulu Galore & Sweet Leaf @ Temple Lulu rocked the grass at 2 Kolegas 10 days ago with her suave voice, charming smile and soothing ukulele sounds. I’m assuming she will do more of the same to the Temple goers tonight and have no reason to believe it won’t be fun. Friday July 6th Omnipotent Youth Society @ Yugong I get a feeling I have not been to Yugong Yishan forever and that might be true. Granted, they’ve been putting on a few high profile shows lately and I’m seriously overdue for a return there. Friday would be interesting and packed most likely with Shijiazhuang’s Omnipotent Youth Society doing a rare stop in the capital. Last time these cats played a paying show, there were 200 people stuck outside Mao Livehouse that couldn’t get in. Even with ticket prices at 150 rmb, I expect a full house here. 3 Weddings & 1 Farewell @ 2kolegas DH & The Hellcats as we know them will be no more. One member is moving overseas while 3 are getting married. They’re marking the occasion [...]
With Daze Feast preparations well underway, and BD’s new baby, Cuju, due to open next week, things are little busy here at Daze HQ, but you can be sure that’s not going to stop us catching some tunes! Here’s a few of the shows that have caught our attention this weekend: Friday June 1 HitWeek China 2012 @ Tango 3rd Floor Italian acts La Fame di Camillia and Negrita are joined by local friends Shanren for night two of cross-cultural fun at Tango. The party kicks off Thursday night with Subsonica, La Fame di Camillia along with Zhou Yunshan & Ruins. Goodbye Sister Qin! @ Old What For anyone who’s ever set foot in Old What you’ll know the lovely boss lady Sister Qin is the one who keeps this little gem running,. Well she’s decided it’s time to say goodbye (temporarily we hope!), so all the regular bands are getting together in what promises to be one epic night to bid her farewell! The Age of Innocence @ Yugong Yishan Happy Children’s Day! For those of us eternal children, DUDE, DH & Hellcats, Residence A & Candy Monster will be rocking the house at Yugong tonight. DUDE are currently finishing up their latest album, and about to head out on a massive China tour, so I for one am looking forward to hearing lot’s of new songs from them! Saturday June 2 Book Swap & Board Games 4th Year Anniversary Our baby is all grown up folks.. 4 years [...]
You’re in it for a treat Beijingers… this is a good weekend with some substantial goodies in store for you all. I’m just pissed off I’m gonna miss a lot of it due to out-of-town Capoeira commitments. Let’s get started: Thursday April 19th: Swan Punch @ Tango Metalheads from Denmark hit Beijing tonight as part of their China tour. I just heard a few samples of the two bands scheduled to play tonight and these kids are not bad! Cool little show to get for a heavy hitting start to the weekend. The Kandidate are relatively new whereas Scarred by Beauty are hardened veterans of the scene and fuse a few different types of metal together. Me thinks it could be worth it. Borbetomagus @ 2 Kolegas Art Noise from New York City… really ‘daze? art noise? well, I’ve only ever been exposed to the local variety of noise so it might be enlightening/refreshing to see what other people do with this kind of music elsewhere. I have absolutely no clue as to what they do and therein lies my interest. just got word that this was canceled folks.. sorry. Friday April 20th Abaji @ Temple Last year, Abaji brought Jianghu to its knees! This guy is so freaking talented that just thinking about the prospects of watching him play sends shivers down my spine. It’s bedoin blues, world music, incredible musicianship and much more! I’m not sure how Temple is gonna handle this but i might just get to [...]
Hellooo Beijing.. miss me? I didn’t think so either. Ruby did an amazing job keeping the show on the road while I was out on an ear-cleaning mission. Many posts/comments coming up once I catch up but let’s first get started with some quick slants as tonight (wednesday) has some pretty darn solid offerings. Wednesday Dec 21st Muma & 3rd Party @ Yugong Yishan One of the most intense performers I’ve seen this side of the big silly is back with a heavy hard hitting record. We’ve been waiting and talking about this one at ‘daze central for a few months already and the results will be heard tonight. I did get to sample a few of the new cuts and it’s very dark and industrial sounding (think NIN). I’m not sure how that’s gonna come of live, especially at Yugong Yishan. Still, Muma & 3rd Party are veterans coming off a national tour and this should be pretty darn solid. Second Hand Rose @ Tango: Good old funny veterans are back in Beijing playing a venue they have learned to control.. Their last gig over there was pretty darn amazing for the band’s 10th and I wouldn’t expect any less from the gang. They’ve also been out touring quite extensively this year so it should be quite tight. Cross-talk rock at its finest with a hint of drag and a whole lotta attitude. Thursday Dec 22nd Take a break and save yourself for the weekend…. It’s gonna be massive [...]
Saturday November 19th at 2 Kolegas was the second of two 4 am nights which hasn’t happened in a long time. It was busy musically and for good reasons! Ruby headed over to D-22 for Shanghai’s Friend or Foe but yours truly was more intrigued by the prospects of seeing Free The Birds come out for an increasingly rare appearance… It was freaking cold man.. one of the coldest days of the year so far but the Drive In was packed nicely. It’s becoming a habit nowadays whenever DH & The Hellcats come out to play. Skarving got things started nicely with their uptempo SKA beats.. I’ve never been a fan of SKA but they are now one of the most fun bands in town. They just get a crowd jumping up and down in a contagious fashion. They’re adding new wrinkles now to their show with a few more reggae songs and also guest appearances by little Hai Xia who turns out has a pretty darn good voice especially on classic Chinese songs. Crowd ate it up and kept bugging here for more songs which was cooool. Good going guys, just a little more work on the Bob Marley covers. It looks like they were sporting yet another new bass player making it #3 this year if i’m not mistaken. Free The Birds came up next and I’m not sure what to say about this one. The band was rusty and out of sync big time but they were [...]
man this week just flew by. I’ve been mostly hibernating catching up with recordings from here and there but it’s time to look forward to the what the week end will bring musically: Thursday November 17th: Starfruit @ Jianghu: This one just sounds intriguing… progressive folk accompanied with Italian poetry reading. 40rmb entrance fee also gets you 2 CDs according to the douban event but don’t quote me on this. Friday November 18th: Mademoiselle @ 2Kolegas: Marie Claude and her gang make it to 2 Kolegas for one last time with this lineup before Mathieux departs from the big silly. The band has survived many lineup changes already but this one is gonna be tougher to swallow than the others me thinks. So grab some dinner and then hit the drive-in for some good Gypsy Jazz action and little glamour Quebequois. It’s gonna be a fun time! Thick Makeup night @Mako: This is a weird one out of left field but if you’re into the makeup Goth metal stuff, this might be the place for you! Japanese bands, local bands and more all gather around shuangjing… lineup includes Residual Poem, Dengel, Toreador, 暗绽乐队Bloom In the Dark, 夜莺乐队Nightingale. Lidong @ Jiangjinjiu: The ningxia folksters are on the last stretch perfecting their craft before they’re ready to release an album. They’re no longer referred to in English as “Migratory Bird” but simply “EAST”…. sing alongs, harmonies, a few good people in a warm place. Not bad! Da Bang @ Yugong Yishan: Not [...]
Hell ‘Bone is what i dubbed this unholly union that saw two of my favorite beijing fun bands come together for a fantastic night of rock n roll at Yugong Yishan: DH & The Hellcats along with Black Cat Bone I’ve reviewed both bands here so many times that it would seem extremely redundant to go over their individual performances again: Both are fun, rowdy, and just generally bring the good moods and good times whenever they play. I’m not sure why it took so long to get both of them together but I’m hoping that there will be a few more appearances by Hell ‘Bone in the future. What was extremely cool about the show was how the bands merged together and swapped members throughout the set, slowly morphing from one band to the other. This only really worked on the covers though has most members of both bands knew them and could play them. Once DH & The Hellcats fully exited the stage, it was time for good old Black Cat Bone action and tunes… down and dirty boogey woogey Rock n Roll. My favorite part of the whole thing was the grand finale with both bands onstage threatening to make it crumble under their collective weights as they were matching each other tit for tat, beat for hat, swinging the night away. It was a really fun night that was marked by a huge contrast in sound quality: The BL and PL periods! BL: Before Lee took [...]
This is the kind of weekend that hurts my head in terms of picking where to go… so many good shows, so little time and I wanna see them all.. yes my precious, I want them all! Mongolian Music Festival at Mako, Pilot Records Intercity Festival in Chaoyang Park, Black Cat Bone w/ DH & The Hellcats ( aka Hell’Bone) just to name a few! Let’s snap to it! Thursday Sept 8 Gou Mao @ Jianghu I’ve never heard of the guy but he’s got a couple of CDs to his name and the stuff on Douban sounds pretty darn good. Acoustic rock with earthy vibes and a slight heavy edge. Plus, I’m thinking I ain’t been to Jianghu in a little while. Definitely an interesting option Friday Sept 9 Mongolian Festival day 1 @ Mako Yes folks, this is taking place at Mako Livehouse in Shuangjing who is making a strong comeback over the past few weeks as a premier live music venue. Headlining Day 1 of the festival is old Friends Hanggai along with rockers Thin Man whose lead singer, Dai Qin is also Mongolian. Shaman Humai, one of the first bands on, seems quite interesting. it should be fun! Miss Lulu Galore @ Alanting Yes, Lulu Galore, of the Burlesque Group fame, is launching her solo dance and music project with this debut performance at Alanting in Sanlitun South.. to put it in her own words: ” Miss Lulu Galore and Sweet Leaf is her latest music [...]
