A couple of months ago, the team behind Rock in China wiki and good ‘daze friends set out to collect samplers from all around China to get a feel for what was happening in the ‘core side of things… by ‘core they meant hardcore, nintendocore and all kinds of other terms i’d never heard off. I also discovered in the process that there was something called Folkcore, I kid you not. well, the baby is out on bandcamp and you can go download it: http://coreinchina.bandcamp.com/album/core-in-china lyrics & credits: http://wiki.rockinchina.com/w/CORE_IN_CHINA_(VA) Track Listing: 1.Why Lazy – Dying in the dream 04:35 2.NewTank – The Dreamer 04:22 3.Meat Sucks – Buried the Truths 04:54 4.Ordnance – Ask for a justification 03:44 5.Partisan – Selfish 03:18 6.Monkey King – Until You Come 05:31 7.Multi-Ego – End of Me 04:01 8.Mensheng – 故謠 Ballad of Fallen 04:54 9.Die In Velvet – 每天生每天死 03:59 10.Ashtemato – Joker 05:06 11.Saving Molly – To My Friend 02:58 12.Luktomo – We Are Luktomo 06:41 13.Beyond Cure – Self Destruction 04:34 14.DustFall – Dawn Late 06:02 15.Thyhazard – Liar 04:58 16.King Ly Chee – 在路上 feat. Flash back to 2009 when yours truly had a hectic circuit running around Beijing from show to show, the one slotted in the middle featured Voodoo Kungfu and the Folk Orchestra at Mao Livehouse. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the sight of Li Nan perched up above the stage, his body covered in writings, preaching to a hypnotized crowd in a packed Mao Live. It was beautiful! Fast forward a few years, things have changed and it’s apparently time to waive Voodoo Kungfu goodbye as their frontman and musical soul, Li Nan is headed out to Berklee College of Music. The announcement was made through his weibo account also announcing a farewell tour sometime this spring. Here’s hoping it’s a grandiose and befitting celebration of a unique monster. All of Voodoo Kungfu’s tunes are now available for download on their douban page for personal use and hopefully not for abuse. Voodoo is one of the most interesting acts still and Li Nan definitely had a lot to do with it. I’m sure something will come out of his time stateside! You can also follow the band on weibo for some interesting tidbits and historical facts that Li Nan has been posting lately about the music, logos, makeup, influences etc… http://weibo.com/voodookungfu I don’t think many people will understand how special of an artist China is losing… I’ll refers you to this slightly outdated, but nevertheless relevant, interview by Gary Temple for City Weekend a few years back: http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/beijing/articles/blogs-beijing/the-beat/voodoo-kungfu-and-the-coming-dark-age/ Up from [...]
There’s a lot of new music going around ‘daze headquarters and tons of reviews delayed by real life obligations… so it’s always good to be able to share some of the stuff with you guys and see whatcha all think. I’m digging Hedgehog’s gloomy dark direction. Gou Ri De 狗日的 S/T I guess this can be translated as “Of Dog Days” or according to the band “motherf**r”… it’s a recent release from these kids in Yunnan, some of which are part of the Québec Redneck Bluegrass Project. It sounds good y’all! It’s funny how I’m starting to get back into hardcore recently with Black Flag and the likes… and this one fits right in. It’s unfortunate that they broke [...]
Back in 2008, Google announced their free music download service in China in cooperation with top100.cn, http://music.google.cn with a bang: The promise of legal & trustworthy FREE downloads was an exciting one. Almost 3 years into it, most people have forgotten about said service but could this sleeping giant be google’s trojan horse into the mainland? with the latest round of legislations outlawing unlicensed music along with China’s closure of a whole bunch of illegal music download sites, I am surprised that more people are not using this or talking about it. According to this article from 2009, there’s around 5 million songs a day being downloaded. I’d love to see updated numbers for 2010 or 2011 from Google themselves if anyone knows where i can find them. See, over the last few months, there have been rumors of google launching a music service and most of the people writing about this seem to forget that the music service has been around for almost 3 years already. How can it be that Google’s least blocked project in the country that’s got the biggest number on web users is ignored? Something is just not right… all the points covered in the article mentioned above are already implemented in Google Music China. you can stream all the songs and download them. Sure, when they launched, the selection was limited. Now however, most international releases end up there right away. a clean, DRM free, no strings attached download service… did I mention free? [...]
Thanks to Jake Newby over at Kungfuology for pointing out that Shanghai’s Top Floor Circus had made their record available for download for free online. The record is called 上海市经典流行摇滚金曲13首 ( 13 of Shanghai’s golden hits or smtg like that) This is a really cool package that includes songs, lyrics, chords, alternative covers and basically everything in the kitchen including the sink! That’s just a really cool idea! download that baby and that a look at some of those covers, just funny! I’m actually listening to it as I type this and I’m quite enjoying the melodies. It’s on the poppier side of the spectrum, with some jazz/funk thrown in there and really nicely upbeat, at least for the parts I’ve heard. I’m really digging track #4, 是男人. Here is the link on 115: http://u.115.com/file/f2cec97798 Head over to Jake Newby‘s page for more info or check out Top Floor Circus’ douban
Remember that little show back in May 2010 with Bad Mamasan and Chunqiu? Well, our good old friend, metalhead and all around madman of Beijing Music, Mr. Jaime Welton, had a recorder on… at least for the Bad Mamasan side of the show! The result has been out for a little while. mastered by Jaime himself and the band has finally decided to let it all loose on their website! Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you : a total of 12 ear blasting tunes made up of covers and originals with Jaime on vocals/guitars, Toby on Bass and the other Toby on drums…. Get over there to Bad Mamasan’s website and download it. I particularly like their versions of Ace of Spade and Helter Skelter, as well as God of War. As you’re listening to Ace of Spade, towards the end of the song, you can clearly hear how the name of the album came about… good stuff guys.. nice prep for my metal week Incidentally, rumor has it the band might.. might… play unannounced October 2nd at 2 Kolegas… don’t quote me on this though… you’re on your own!
*note:* Sorry about the broken download link. It’s fixed now! Just because the anniversary is over, it doesn’t mean we’re gonna stop bringing you folks the good tunes and with cause, we got a whole Live CD available today exclusively and nowhere else ever but at BeijingDaze.com. Yup folks, it’s none other than Zhang Si’an himself that was gracious enough to provide us with this fantastic recording of one his recent performances at jianghu jiuba in March 2010! This particular performance has Jean-Sébastien Héry (Zhang Si’an, 张思安 on Rythm Guitar, Zhongruan, Voice) & Mathieu Wahiche (Solo Guitar, sound effects 麻雀) Track Listing 1- 世界上的人 – Living on the back of the earth 2- 离开这个地方- Leave this place 3- 花儿为什么这样红 – Why are the roses so red (Cover, Uyghur folk song) 4- 引言 – Intro (Played on a Chinese instrument, the Zhongruan) 5- A 号火车 Take the A Train (Jazz classic from Duke Ellington played on the Zhongruan) 6- 幸福在哪里 – Where is happiness (Played on the Zhongruan) 7- 我的心死了- My heart is dead 8- 忘了- I forgot 9- 解放我。天净沙·秋思 Free me (Cover of an ancient Chinese poem by Ma Zhi Yuan) Please download the records above (by clicking on the cover) and enjoy it…. JSB is one of my favorite musicians to listen to these days and I have truly enjoyed the conversations we’ve shared at the various live venues in town. Again, sincere thanks to Jean-Sébastien for doing this and releasing this live album exclusively through BeijingDaze. If you [...]
I feel freaking spoiled and I’m loving the amazing musicians running around Beijing who are making it possible for me to get you guys all these tunes: We’ve already had: * Mademoiselle and her Gypsy Jazz * ChunQiu (Spring Autumn) with Mando-Metal * Black Cat Bone with their brand of Blooze * The angelic folky sounds of the one and only Daisy Sweetgrass * One was from our old friends who keep reinventing themselves in light of all the adversity that faces them Girls Are Waiting to Meet You. * Space rock extravaganza with 2 rocking tunes from RandomK(e) and the goodies keep on coming with no end in sight! Today, it’s yet another first! The Bad Apples gang has come through and decided to donate their whole album, Pangea, to the cause… Yes, that’s a whole freaking album with all 10 songs, no DRM, no strings attached for you to get! If you haven’t heard of Bad Apples, you’re missing out! I did an interview with frontman Michael Dallin a few months ago ahead of their Yugong Yishan gig and have been keeping an eye on his side project Vital Time for a while now! They’re currently regrouping and preparing to hit the scene again this summer with a new record, renewed energy and good backing so expect their name to pop up more often here. What is Pangea? Pangea was recorded in 2009 guerrilla style by the gang with no budget and the whole band playing live! It [...]
That header just makes me smile! The Goodies just keep on coming from the amazing musicians we have in Beijing: We’ve already had Mademoiselle and her Gypsy Jazz, ChunQiu (Spring Autumn) with Mando-Metal and Black Cat Bone with their brand of Blooze, the angelic folky sounds of the one and only Daisy Sweetgrass and the last one was from our old friends who keep reinventing themselves in light of all the adversity that faces them Girls Are Waiting to Meet You. Now, the good guys at RandomK(e) are jumping in and helping us celebrate by throwing in 2 of their titles: “Twisting” & “Eat With a Spoon” which were both recorded live and will give you a clear idea on what the band sounds like. The K(e) just celebrated their 5th year together with a huge party at 2Kolegas a few weeks ago! Here’s to 5 more years of good music and partying together! Special shout outs to Jackson who found the time to send in the tracks knowing that he is due to become a dad anytime now.. congratulations buddy! RandomK(e) is really one of those special exceptions in my book: The band, which is made up of expats, has survived longer than most in a city that is not usually kind to musicians! They’re different from the copycats out there and might not be everyone’s cup of tea but they got the street cred. You can also show your support to the band and download their record from [...]
Thanks to Girls Are Waiting to Meet You for the previously non released “Zombie Girl”.. it was downloaded 47 times in April and 182 times in may as of yesterday before I removed it!!! The Goodies just keep on coming from the amazing musicians we have in Beijing: We’ve already had Mademoiselle and her Gypsy Jazz, ChunQiu (Spring Autumn) with Mando-Metal and Black Cat Bone with their brand of Blooze and the angelic folky sounds of the one and only Daisy Sweetgrass. Now, our friends over at Girls Are Waiting To Meet You deliver one amazing present: for the first time ever, the Zombie Girl track is available anywhere!!! you’ve seen the video directed by Andy Deemer ( also below) and heard the track live but there was nowhere you could buy/download the track until now… exclusively on BeijingDaze for 1 week (so get it fast) I just the Girls play on sunday night after MIDI at Jianghu jiuba where they put on a hell of a show despite being short a few members including Adam, their musical swiss army knife… I was a bit worried as the sax is such an important part of their sounds but they have reworked things nicely (more on that in another post). The band gets a lot of coverage on this blog and i do go out of my way to catch them, true! that is just a testament to their uniqueness! I love what they do and how dedicated they are to [...]
