I’ve mentioned about a gazillion times Jacky Danny and i’ll probably keep mentioning them as i love what they do. A few months ago, i wrote about the new record being out. Now, everything is 100% ready and the kids are about to kick off a China Tour. I really dig the art and font on this one… would make a cool poster! If you’re a fan of 80s hard rock, do yourself a favour and go check the kids out. I guarantee you a good time. to show they’re serious, here is a promo video for said tour!! http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNTQwMTM0Nzc2.html?f=19144529 Good luck kids…

How you surviving the week y’all? With Jue kicking ass and taking names, it seems like the last 2 weeks have been a constant stream of live shows and music news and none of it is over yet. Way away from the mainstream, I was fortunate enough to catch some cool stuff this week with Japanese Drumming prodigy, Funky, organizing an impromptu music festival with some real y old school things that included a COBRA reunion… yeah, that Cobra.. but that’s all for another day. Let’s see what we should be looking forward to over the next few days: Fri Mar 22 Fangzui Xiangfa @ Temple This is my gig of the night. THe band was first brought to my attention by none other than J-curls and they kick ass. Old school hardcore punk that takes no prisoner. They’re coming off their first China tour in a while and have been putting on some kickass shows. Gumbleed and the Flyx will be on hand to provide some extra tunes. Acid Live/Wu Ning ye @ 2 Kolegas I saw these cats perform together about two months ago at Temple and it was kickass. They have developed such a chemistry since then with some of them even joining BUYi permanently. It’s a blast and tons of fun as they go through jazz, folk, blues seemingly. Definitely a good time. Wu Ning Ye almost seems happy these days as he smiles more on stage. Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls @ Mao Live [...]

starting the snake ride with some new tunes: some are old favourites, some are new ones and one is even from out of the country. Let’s see what February is bringing us: Pairs: They’re at it again and they might get the award for most releases in the last 12 months. A new album, available online for free download/streaming and completely different from anything else they have done. I would try to describe it myself but i think they do a better job than i did on it: We’re pretty happy and slightly embarrassed to announce the release of our new album, Eltham Join. The album is a bit of a change as it features absolutely no drums and no guitars and is just piano and vocals. You can both listen to it and download it for free by going to pairs.bandcamp.com We warn you, it may have the most out of tune, most awful vocals ever put to tape. Sorry. I’m tone deaf. It’s to be expected. It was recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered towards the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 by Adam McRae of Reykjavictim (reykjavictim.bandcamp.com) fame. Adam was awesome to record with. Everyone should do it and should give him heaps of cold hard cash. Do what you will with this info. It’s a digital release only. Who can be bothered pressing CD’s for this trash? But here it is. Something different and something that we found pretty fun to do. Thanks. Love always, [...]
From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-80s Post 80s The Post-80s (also the Post-1980, Chinese: 八零后; pinyin: bālínghòu) is a colloquial term which refers to the generation whose members were born between 1980 to 1989 in Mainland China after the introduction of the One-child policy. This generation currently ranges in age from 22 to 32, making up a major portion of China’s young adult demographic. i think it was about 2 years ago that i stumbled upon Jacky Danny and declared then the best thing in Beijing’s underground music scene since…well..since the last best thing. One of the first songs of theirs that i liked is “from the 80s” and judging by the band’s looks and type of music, i pretty much for whatever stupid odd reason associated it with the excess of the 80s hair bands they were emulating. This past friday at Temple, as i watched them go through the last half of their set with Rikki Sixx helping out on bass, i finally grasped the whole song as i watched a generation sing about where they came from and how they coped… and while they might not know it, Li Bo and Co. have penned the anthem for their generation of rock n rollers ( kick ass, Los crashers, res A….): some twenty years ago二十几年前 I landed on this big bad world我来到了这操蛋的世界 in the first place I didn’t know起初我可不知道 it was the age of rock n’ roll那曾是个属于摇滚的时代 I am now twenty-four现在二十多的我 not a child anymore不再年少轻狂 not about to change the world不敢妄想改变这世界 [...]
Quite a diverse set of offerings awaits the music faithful this weekend. I mean we’re talking everything from electro to good old fashioned trash metal with a little flavor of postrock. it’s really feeling like all the venues are loading up for the last few days of warm weather with some big ass solid shows planned over the next couple of weeks, especially towards the end of the month. but we’ll get to that in due time.. let’s see what we got just ahead of us first: Friday October 19th: Ajinai @ JIanghu The weeks go by and the goodbye shows multiply. it’s Ajinai’s turn to stop by the hutongs and pay tribute to one of their favorite stomping grounds. They’ve been really really active lately promoting the band overseas and they’re set for a Hanggai style push soon. Good guys and good grassland Mongol throat singing. Pet Conspiracy @ Yugong another year, another LP for the electro quartet. This one is called “return from the future” and it’s pretty much picking up where the last album left off…. expect a lot of beats, guitars, costumes, good times and decent sounds with one of the few bands that actually sounds good at Yugong Yishan. Jacky Danny @ Temple keeping with different registers, old ‘daze favorites, Jacky Danny, are out of their hiding holes and into the Temple. As far as i know, there’s a record in the works and the kids are itching to play… i expect some lewd crude [...]
There’s a mouth watering variety of great gigs coming your way this weekend folks. You want metal, you got it. you want reggae, you got it, you want pop, you got it etc… i’m pretty stoked about this one folks so let’s get it started! Friday Sept. 7th Apocalyptica @ Yugong So we might not have gotten Metallica in town but we get something close enough here.. The Cello version! Apocalytica has been making waves for years with their own take on the songs. The monsters of rock themselves have given them their endorsement and they are usually picky. Indie China Anniversary @Mako Indiechina.com celebrates 8 years of covering the scene and they’re bringing in the big guns for this celebration. We’re talking really big underground guns: Low Wormwood, Omnipotent Youth Society, Glow Curve as well as relative unknowns (for me) The Dyne. This might be one of the few chances people get to see OYS without it being silly crowded and sold out considering Mako has a bigger capacity than Mao at least. A great bill and a good celebration of people that have supported the music industry for a long time. That said.. 8 years and they can’t figure out how to make a poster for their big event??? WTF? Longshendao @ Mao Dreadlocks and linen with be all over the Mao pit as China’s reggae icons, longshendao, comes out to party! Expect a lot of funny smells in the air, good times, sing alongs and one hell [...]
It’s looking deceivingly like a quiet musical weekend in Beijing but don’t be fooled folks. There are some pretty sweet gigs taking place over the next few days while the city prepares for the upcoming festivals… let’s see what’s cooking and not necessarily good looking. Thursday July 19th Whai @ Temple They got ups, downs and tons of potential but they’re still looking for a direction. It’s really interesting to see this band grow up and mature! Now with the addition of a DJ, the sound has an interesting depth but as we were saying with a buddy not too long ago, I wonder what they would sound like if they dropped the DJ, added a Keyboard and had more guitar. Catch them at Temple to see another step in their evolution. Folk Night @ Lao What I don’t know why but just looking outside my window and seeing the ugliness of the gray skies, I get in a strange state of mind and want a little folk. Old What has it tonight with an assortment of local folk singer including Sichuan’s liangzi wom i never heard off before but can be interesting. I’m overdue for a visit down there actually. Friday July 20th Hanggai @ 2 Kolegas If you choose one gig this week, make it this one! I expect the place to be packed, lamb to be roasted and people having a jolly good time grasslands-style. Be warned that the band will play early by 2 Kolegas standard [...]
recovered yet folks? I think yesterday’s little gig at 2 kolegas was my Hair of the Dog… Full of energy, ready to get back in the ring and dish out/take another swing. So, what’s up over the next few days? A heck of a lot! Of course, Football is still reigning supreme and determining what happens with Beijing Nightlife but Music is holding its ground and there’s some really intriguing stuff taking place. Let’s kick it! Thursday June 28th Make up Night @ Mao Live One of the most interesting events I’ve seen listed at Mao Livehouse in a long time. Gloomy Hymn of Darkness, Tenger Cavalry and other heavy bands come together to celebrate the inner freaks in each of us. I can’t figure out what Mao is doing with it in terms of charges but it looks like there’s some discounts for couples and folks are definitely encouraged to dress up. I’d be very excited to check out Tenger Cavalry that I referred to a few months ago. It’s looking like this previously-one-man-show is now a full fledged band specializing in melodic pagan metal. me likey!! Friday June 29th Ningxia Night @ 2 Kolegas do i really need to write more? Ningxia bands, Ningxia Friends, Ningxia Noodles and a heck of a lot of good times await those that make it to the drive-in. This particular edition features Buyi, Wu & The Side Effects, Whai and Lidong who might be pulling double duty friday night. Old School Rock [...]
After a few weeks of balls-to-the-wall type of shows, we got a nice chilled weekend to recharge the batteries before facing another onslaught for weeks! and that’s why you’re getting minislants folks! Let’s get to it: Thursday April 12 Rock Tigers Rolling Bolling @ 2 Kolegas Chances are this is not gonna happen as I’m writing this a few hours before the gig and it’s hard to get official confirmation. Worse case scenario is that you’ll be in the drive-in listening to Rolling Bolling. If by miracle the tigers show up, then you’ll get Kimchibilly aka rockabilly made in Korea. I heard a few things online and loved the energy! Here’s hoping! Tigers won’t be there! Li Jianbin @ Jianghu You might remember him from the band “Dong Fang Hong” or Low Wormwood’s 2009 tour, Lao Li is one of those Lanzhou multi-instrumentalists with a sharp guitar, yellow river flavor and folk credit. He’s releasing his new album, Moonlight Through Flowers, with an intimate performance over at Jianghu. It could and should be enjoyable. He reminds me a lot of Dong Zi. Friday April 13 Rock Night @ Yugong Yishan Amazing Insurance Salesmen, Wu & Side Effects, Devils at the Crossroad and Dwaas are on hand to deliver a big rock night for those of you that get there. There’s some pretty good raw talent on there folks and it will be loud.. that is if Yugong’s sound holds up. Dwaas is the unknown on there because from what i [...]
Too many shows over the past week and not enough time to review them individually. Nevertheless, there is much to be said about each: Longjing @ Temple (March 7) I stopped by Temple thinking it would be an off night but turns out reggae outfit, Longjin, was playing. These guys have been touring China a lot lately, probably capitalizing on the reggae wave which i’m sure is just starting. Musically, they didn’t do too bad. I was less than impressed by the performance of frontwoman, Feifei! She looked bored up there and the audience responded in kindness. Considering these guys have been around since 2007, I expected a lot better. Randy Able Stable @ Temple (March 8th ) My first of two encounters with the stable that week. What can I say that I haven’t written about them yet? They’re good, they’re tight and they’re fun to watch. I love their covers but I’m also digging the originals that Randy and Co have been working on. Expect a single and a video to be out soon for the song ” Second bar to the right”. Coincidentally, if you haven’t, check out their soundcloud. Plenty of good recordings up there from their gigs around Beijing. AIS, Me Too & Abominati @ 2 Kolegas (March 9th) Me Too is improving folks.. these kids might still have a bright future on the scene if they keep at it. I’m digging what they’re doing and how they’re getting tighter on stage. Check them out [...]
