Quickslants: Stringfellow, Swift Release, Bookswap, Queen Tribute and more

Hiya Hiya Moving over at ‘daze HQ so we might be able to resume normal blogging operations as of this week. A lot of pics, reviews and news coming your way but we’re gonna start with an early edition of the quickslants because of a potentially VERY good show on Wednesday at Yugong Yishan…. so here goes folks Wed October 31: Ken Stringfellow + Sonja Van Hamel @ Yugong: I’ve been keeping my eyes on this one for a while due to strong recommendations from a friend whose opinion I do respect. Stringfellow is one of those modern day poet/troubadours with tons of talent. He had his hands in the last Hanggai album among other things like playing with REM and the Posies. Sonja is also multifaceted and multi-talented. This one should be pretty darn good folks… pretty rarn good. Read an interview with Strangefellow over at City Weekend Thursday Sept 1: Pierre Brahin Trio @ Jianghu: Been a while since Jianghu made an appearance on here. This trio, regulars on the Beijing scene, have mastered their craft and deliver smoothing Jazz sounds. I haven’t been able to catch them in a very long time so it’ll be quite fun to see how they changed. I remember thinking that Pradat’s stuff was hit or miss a few years back… I’m overdue for a do over. Friday Sept 2: Ember Swift CD Launch @ 2 Kolegas: I like Ember.. She smiles and entertains all while delivering songs that are not all [...]

Quickslants: Beijing Prom, dazeFEAST, Residence A and more fun weekend goodies

Hope you got some rest last weekend folks cause this upcoming one will require some serious stamina from all of you considering all the fun stuff taking place in Beijing over the next few days! so, what we got? Wednesday June 22nd: Misandao @ Mao: Misandao is tons of fun! I love these guys because they’re genuinely punk to the bone, skinhead bootboys that bring on the Oi punk like no one else. I just saw them last week at Mao and they have not lost a beat. Newcomers, The Rudeness, open things with their brand of ska/reggae/punk. Not a bad humpday gig Thursday June 23: Paper Tigre & RE-TROS @ Yugong Yishan: I couldn’t care less about papier tigre but any opportunity to watch the RE-TROS should be cherished.. these cats perform with such amazing passion. Label them whatever you want, they put on a show each and everytime that cannot leave you indifferent. Ember & Jess @ 2Kolegas: Take Ember Swift with her folk pop and the Laowai Song, Jess Meider’s Heavenly Stems and you got yourself a lovely night of lilith fair type music to sooth you soul by. Friday June 24th: Beijing Prom @ The Bookworm: This one is so bizarre that it deserves a mention. Our good friend the Prom Queen has decided to go back in time and party like it was 1990 for those that remember the era. You’re expected to dress for Prom, with heavy emphasis on sequins, then mingle with likeminded [...]

Beijing quickslants: Jess Awakening, 2 Kolegas Celebrates and Bluegrass Retruns

Well folks, if the whole fire safety hazard thingy hasn’t put a damper in your going out plans for this weekend, there’s plenty of stuff happening this weekend. 2 Kolegas is turning 6 which pretty much will monopolize my friday and saturday! I’m so thankful I’ll have Sunday for recovery, kind off… Thursday May 26th: Dolan @ jianghu: Hanggai is no longer the only game in town. They’ve got plenty of competition when it comes to that grassland sound from the likes of Ajinai and now Dolan. It’s not the same but they do share similar roots. Check it out Jess @ Great Leap brewery: Jess brings back the acoustic guitar for a double set at Beijing’s favorite microbrewery. Starts a bit early at 8:00 but it should be some good fun in case the freaking rain doesn’t mess it all up Friday May 27: 2 Kolegas 6 Year Celebration part 1: SUBS and BUYI headline the first night of celebration for 2 Kolegas with help from Skarving as wel las Wu & The side effects. Expect a huge party, DJ, alcohol, fun, and a whole lotta rocking going on until the wee hours of the morning. After hours Jam Session will probably also be taking place. ChunQiu Unplugged @ Gulou 121: Kaiser, Yang Meng and the boys will be in Gulou pulling out the acoustic guitars for those that want a chilled out evening. It’s always a joy listening to them do their thing with harmonies and what not. [...]

Quickslants: Wu Fei, The Bone returns, Electric Jess, Ember Nights and Hard Mako

Trying to get the quickslants in early this week so that people can plan accordingly. There’s a whole lotta stuff going on and unlike previous weeks where one genre was taking over, this one is pretty eclectic! Thursday April 14: Eisenman & Heavenly Stems @ Yugong: In what might be his last appearance in Beijing for a while, the “hutong springsteen” as some magazine refers to him, enlists the help of Jess Meider for a rocking night! Should be a cool intimate affair with foreign flair. Don’t expect Jess’ jazzy side as she’s playing tonight with her rock chick outfit, The Heavenly Stems. Old and New Beijing will be there. Friday April 15: Ephemeral Day 3 @ Penghao: Wu Fei headlines this 3rd night of Ephemeral festival along with Matthieu Ha and L’ocelle Mare. This might be the most intimate of those performances yet and one that I’m very much looking forward to. I did attend the second night a jianghu last week but I can’t say it was…uhm… exciting! I hope this one makes up for it. Ember Swift @ Jiangjinjiu Ember apparently just finished laying down tracks for her latest CD so expect some new songs and good fun uptempo music. I’ve been meaning to catch her play again since last time at the Bookworm but failed miserably. I’ll make parts of this one somehow. Hard Rock Classics at Mako: Over by Shuangjing, the is some old fashioned hard rock action with Jacky Danny, The Hippies and Velvet [...]

Quickslants: Charity, Heavenly Beginnings, Rolling Metal, Taste of Orient and More

We’re hitting the quickslant early this week because there’s a lot of awesomeness in Beijing from an artistic point of view and a charitable one. Without further due, here’s what’s kicking ass and taking names: Wednesday March 23 The Heavenly Stems @ Yugong Yishan: Jess Meider is having a coming out party for her new rock trio. It’s a bit of a departure for Jess from her Jazz/folk into the world of electric guitars and power chords. I was lucky enough to get a preview and quite liked it. Jess is blessed with one hell of a voice as well as an amazing range…. this could turn out to be intriguing. Earthquake Benefit Dinner @ Mosto & Modo These 2 fine establishments are offering elaborate feasts, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the United Nations World Food Program and the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation aid program in Japan. Call now to reserve your place. RMB 490/person (Mosto, includes five-course meal and wine), RMB 390/person (Modo, includes seven plates for two plus wine). 6.30pm. Mosto (5208 6030), Modo (6415 7207) Thursday March 24 Punk Carnival @ Mao: I actually have not gotten around to catch some good old Oi Punk in a while. This thursday’s lineup at Mao with The Dancers, Misandao, Early Bus and Gumbleed sounds like the right opportunity to make up for it. I’ve been itching to catch Gum Bleed over the past year since the last time i saw them play at the Old [...]

The month Live Music died? not so quick! Ember Swift, Jess Meider, JSB, Dancers, Jets Overhead and more

Since before i took off for South Africa to catch some world cup fever, there’s been talk about how the period of “June 11 to July 11″ is and will be the month where the music died… Football and the world cup took over Beijing and put shows on the back burner. It was mostly right as in the early weeks there were hard choices to be made between games and concerts all taking place around 10:00 pm. Still, the month saw quite a slew of events like the ChunQiu 10 years anniversary show, Wu & Side effects album release, etc… This past week and weekend was the first opportunity I had a chance to go full on out and see what happened while i was away. A show on Tuesday at Yugong Yishan turned out to be perfect crap with an audience of about 20 people and a headliner i wouldn’t hire to clean my floors. That said, evening news put on one hell of a performance that night and they’re definitely worth checking out. The guys are actually veterans of the scene and it shows in the way they play. Friday was the busy one! despite the nasty rain, after checking out Abigail at The One, Ruby and I jetted for 2 Kolegas to try and catchup Jean-Sebastian’s Bday performance. We were a bit late for that but got treated to one hell of a show by The Dancers ( Beijing’s first supergroup). If you remember, I mentioned [...]
