Last weekend was a balckhole of Capoeira.. i basically went in and didn’t come out until late monday night. Missed out on quite a few good shows apparently but oh well… Time however for music to take its due now and there is a nice set of gigs coming up to just do that! Let’s get started without delay Thursday April 18 Mademoiselle @ Jianghu The Canadian Mynx is back from an extended overseas trip that saw her play throughout north and south america. For a moment there, i thought Beijing might have lost her for good. No worries though, she’s back and we’re getting ready to get a dose of her addictive suave Jazz starting tonight at Jianghu. I could think of worse ways to start preparing a weekend. Friday April 19 Death to Giants @ Old What Bar Shanghai freak rockers, Death to Giants, along with DJ B.O are putting together a show featuring a collaboration between Death to Giants and DJ B.O known as Death to Cinema. DJ B.O will be screening hand-picked film clips while DtG improvises a soundtrack on the spot. Sounds pretty fun and freaky to me. Also a pretty good option is you can’t catch them at Temple Saturday night. Worm is Green @ Yugong Yishan Trip Hop from Iceland…. do i even need to say more? it sounds so bizarre that it might be worth checking out! I honestly have no idea what to expect but it’s one of those things where [...]
Quite a diverse set of offerings awaits the music faithful this weekend. I mean we’re talking everything from electro to good old fashioned trash metal with a little flavor of postrock. it’s really feeling like all the venues are loading up for the last few days of warm weather with some big ass solid shows planned over the next couple of weeks, especially towards the end of the month. but we’ll get to that in due time.. let’s see what we got just ahead of us first: Friday October 19th: Ajinai @ JIanghu The weeks go by and the goodbye shows multiply. it’s Ajinai’s turn to stop by the hutongs and pay tribute to one of their favorite stomping grounds. They’ve been really really active lately promoting the band overseas and they’re set for a Hanggai style push soon. Good guys and good grassland Mongol throat singing. Pet Conspiracy @ Yugong another year, another LP for the electro quartet. This one is called “return from the future” and it’s pretty much picking up where the last album left off…. expect a lot of beats, guitars, costumes, good times and decent sounds with one of the few bands that actually sounds good at Yugong Yishan. Jacky Danny @ Temple keeping with different registers, old ‘daze favorites, Jacky Danny, are out of their hiding holes and into the Temple. As far as i know, there’s a record in the works and the kids are itching to play… i expect some lewd crude [...]
Random little midweek tidbits that i came across recently! Looks like we’re due for a slew of new music soon judging by the noise on weibo and douban! CMCB, Beijing’s outspoken Rap-Metal luminaries are busy in the studio getting stuff recorded. They’ve been saying this for quite some time now but it seems to be happening! A Video of them in the studio doing the new song 我说的就是我想干的 (What I Said is Exactly what I want to do) is out. I like these guys and I’ve liked them for a long time but the new song is really more of the same. I’m hoping that things will be a bit different once they get the whole thing worked out. In the meantime, Here is 我说的就是我想干的 Shanghai’s Duck Fight Goose has also given the video treatment to one of their songs, Glass Wall… it’s..ahem.. different and strangely reminiscent of like 80s videos. I like it is a weird way! Good to see a band put out a video, strange or not. It’s the best way next to merch to get exposure IMHO Check it out here: Remember MIDI from 3 years ago and that unplugged finale from Miserable Faith? Well MIDI apparently had some tape rolling and here is really the clearest video I’ve ever seen. It’s also got a great little narrative of how things went that night looking for flash lights and having barely enough power to feed one microphone. Just watching it sends chills down my spine folks!! [...]
I must admit it’s refreshing to see non-Chinese bands every so often because it puts things back in perspective. Now, maybe it’s the wrong way to put it but no matter how many good solid Chinese bands there are out there, the number of mediocre ones is just staggering high and i do find myself looking at the silver linings every so often trying to find positives!!! Friday night at Mako Livehouse was not one of those nights! There were plenty of good shows in town mind you but i had this one marked and was not about to miss it even though it pained me to skip a ChunQiu show next to my house. Still, it was gonna be all about Barcelona’s La Pegatina with their upbeat rumba/reggae/fun matched up with Hanggai’s grassland rock. I picked well! Mako was filled quite early actually with a decent crowd of at least 200 by 8:30. All of us early comers were treated to a little 30mn performance by Nine Theaters ( Jiu Bao), one of the newest up and coming Mongolian bands in Beijing. They played during day one of the Mongolian Festival, also at Mako, a few weeks ago where they stood out. The band has a charismatic frontman/guitar player and an interesting mix of throat singing with Metal… They might be a bit young and green but there’s something in there! I’ll be curious to see what they sound like in one year if they stay under Hanggai’s protective [...]
Holly shit was it a busy weekend! I can’t recall running around jagged like this since maybe the May day festivals between Anda at Mako, Intercity at Chaoyang Park and Hell ‘Bone at Yugong… but here, let’s start at the beginning, shall we? Disclaimer: I was invited to attend day 1 of the festivities as a member of the media. Hopefully, free entry didn’t make me more biased than usual Friday was day 1 of Anda Mongolian Festival at Mako Livehouse who’s making a revival of sorts. Some new manager was apparently hired and is doing a great job connecting with local musicians. It would be very good to shift the epicenter of music away from Gulou and we need Mako for that. So yeah, Anda… This was a weird one! Things got started around 8 and I pretty much missed all the early bands due to work and sustenance commitments. I did however get there on time for a few bands including 九宝乐队 (Jiu Bao). I was told that these guys were quite famous, more used to CCTV shows and what not but in a limited register. Friday night, they let loose with guitars, horsehead fiddle and a weird triangle shaped ukulele if i may call it that (anyone knows the name? ). Initially, they sounded like a shanzhai version of Hanggai which they actually are not. The lead singer was quite charismatic, moving around the stage and engaging the audience. By the end of their set which included [...]
