Beijing Live Music Quickslants: 80s still rock, Cape Verde, Ember and a different set of musical flavors.

It’s a holiday week coming out of a 2 festival weekend so things are understandably on the slow side in Beijing. There ain’t much taking place right now but some goodies are definitely worth a little stop over to get your live music fix: (updated friday with 2 gigs at 2 Kolegas (thanks Ruby)) Thursday October 7th: Zhang Si’An at Jiang Jin Jiu: The Frenchman is fresh from his win at GBoB with the insurance salesman and back on folk mode! He’s been working on a bunch of new songs that might just get played tonight. Expect a full band and a full house for tons of fun… you know Ruby will be there for sure. Friday October 8th: Ember Swift trio @ 2 Kolegas: Ok, I’m lame… how could i forget this one? there is some sort of conspiracy in the musi-verse against me catching Ember’s gigs at this point. Other obligations will keep me away yet again but I will catch her sooner or later. Bluesy rock, attitude and talent… good set of musicians + 2 Kolegas = you can’t go wrong Christophe Lier Trio at Jiang Hu: We’re getting started with Jazz season here and this might not be a bad show to hit on a Friday where there is literally nothing else happening in town. There’s supposed to be pianos involved but I’m not sure how they’re gonna pull that one off at Jianghu. Maybe a keyboard if we’re optimistic. Saturday October 9th: Back to the [...]

GBoB 2010: Amazing Insurance Salesmen win a close one and the behind-the-scenes intrigue.

As I posted on monday, good Beijingdaze.com friends, The Amazing Insurance Salesmen, won the Beijing leg of the 2010 Global Battle of the Bands and with it the right to head to Hong Kong and hope to duplicate Rustic’s success story. This year’s Beijing session of the GBoB has been interesting to say the least with cancellations, no-shows, technical problems and what not but, to quote Queen: The Show must go on! … it did! The final was held at Yugong Yishan on September 26 and was supposed to include 8 bands: Nakoma, Vital Time, A公馆 (Residence A), The Amazing Insurance Salesmen, The Quatre, Raging Mob, Multi-Ego and Kick Ass. The drama started early when organizers found out that Quatre was using a laptop with special effect and removed them from the competition after they refused to play without it… and then there were seven! Nakoma went first! The band had a leg-less mannequin standing in for the missing lead singer. They played a decent brand of melodic metal that I thoroughly enjoyed. All things considered, they did a great job and really had no chance in hell with the lack of vocals. I’m looking forward to catching them again soon and I hope they can find themselves a decent voice to complement their music. Up next was the most recent addition to the competition, Vital Time. Michael Dalin et Co. didn’t have an easy time with this one as they had one week to prepare and were missing their [...]

GBoB Heat 1 at 2 Kolegas: A shaky kickstart with a good surprise.

I wasn’t supposed to be in town for this one but things ended up working out differently and by golly, I wasn’t about to miss it. With Beijing’s own RUSTIC winning the global battle for the 2010 edition, I expected a rush of bands to enter this year. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been the case. I made it to 2 Kolegas earlier than ever at 9:00 pm, afraid to miss out on the goods and I definitely got there before things kicked off. It was a new different crowd that seemed mostly made up of musicians and their friends with a few usual suspects. The ever friendly Tofu wasn’t sure about any of the details like the number of bands playing, program or what now but i quickly tracked down some familiar places that might know. There were 3 participants on tap for the evening: Velvet Highway, A公馆 (Residence A) and Kick Ass. They appeared in that particular order! Velvet Highway were up first! The band got themselves on stage and started playing the intro to Motley Crue’s Too Fast For Love to their original song. The singer came out from the back looking like a throwback version of Axl Rose from the Appetite for Destruction era. They played one song which in retrospect was not bad at all but could not escape the earlier impression that they ripped off Motley Crue. This statement came out of two judges, not just yours truly! A公馆 (residence A) was up next. I have [...]

Beijing Weekend Quickslants: more Bucks, bookswap, Great Battles, Kick Ass and more!

A bit of a delayed quickslants this week along with sporadic posting but yours truly was supposed to head out of town and things got complicated. Expect a couple of posts on last weeekend’s Redbucks show soon as well as a trip to the shaanxi provincial restaurant. In the meantime, here is some of what’s happening and good this end of the week: Wednesday September 8: Xiao He & The Belgians at Jianghu: Ok.. not sure about this but it seems like the only option available in town today. Xiao He might or might not turn out as was the case a few days ago at 2 Kolegas. The Belgians will be there and I’m just curious as to what kind of music it’s gonna end up being. could be fun! If it’s not, there’s always the option to run off to Salud. Thursday September 9: it just seems curiously devoid of listings or anything good for this thursday.. there’s bound to be a houseband somewhere doing something if you really care. Capoeira from 7:30 to 9:30 at gongti is always a great option to get this rolling. Friday September 10: Now, this get a bit complicated here with quite a few good things happening around the same time. GBoB at 2 Kolegas: Global battle of the bands heat 1 is set for 2 kolegas. Come out and catch a few Beijing bands duking it out and trying to replicate Rustic’s success on the international scene. There might be a [...]
