Note: Better late than never: I started writing this in January 2013… finally getting it out. I’ve finally got a bit of time to sit down and try to look back at 2012.. gigs, festivals, craps and mishaps. It’s been a long year really and probably the one with the lowest output on ‘daze as I changed jobs, opened a bar and saw my free time reduced to zero. Still, rock n roll was there and there in numbers. I made the gigs, listened to the songs and spent my evenings/nights with my underground brothers. How did it all pan out? It was a strange year really with a lot of bands reuniting and or coming out with long overdue records. Here’s looking at you Zhang Wei Wei and Brain Failure just to name a few. Still, more so than many years before, this one belonged to the young guns. But we’ll get to the records at some other points. Let’s first look at the most memorable performances of the Dragon year: NOTE: This is in NO particular order!!! – Miserable Faith @ MIDI I never got around to writing a review about this particular one but i’ll probably never ever ever forget it. Picture yourself in an outdoor festival, 10000 people standing in front of the main stage for the final performance of a 3 day musical onslaught and they’re singing in unison all of the band’s songs before the band even came onstage. for 30 good minutes, the [...]
Early quickslants this week folks after last week that saw no quickslants due to a busier than expected schedule. There’s a good reason for this, namely an Argentinian Ska band, Capitan Tifus, stopping by Yugong Yishan this wednesday.. It’s also a good day to get start planning your gigs for the beginning of the holiday weekend. Shall we get started? Wednesday Sept. 26 Capitan Tifus @ Yugong Yishan “The most promising band from Argentina” has been making noise online checking out the sites and making sure they let everyone know they will be here. I like a hard working band, especially one that sounds good at what they do. The band has been touring the word behind their latest album and promises a high energy show with dancing galore. Thursday Sept. 27 Randy Able Stable@ Temple The rambling americana trouble makers head over to Temple for another evening full of classic ditties and a few originals. These guys are ‘daze favorites for good reasons and always worth checking out when you have a chance. The Temple gigs go on for two sets so definitely worth the trip and… guess what… it’s free! Friday Sept. 28 Indie Night @ 2 Kolegas interesting mix of bands hitting the drive-in friday night: Steely Heart, Wu & The Side Effects, Residence A & Perpetual Motion Machine. I’m not sure why they called it “indie” night as these bands are just good dancing bands. If Ruby wasn’t out of town, she’d be drooling all over [...]
Well well well… Megadeth’s show on August 3rd has been “postponed” until further notice. This doesn’t really come as a surprise. 2 weeks to the show, no prices were announced, no advertising was printing etc.. I’m not sure the folks from Guitar China have any credibility left outside of a few hardcore fan who believe their “we’re the victim” cries. They had a major fuck up with Dream Theatre not too long ago and now they pulled off this one. The consensus since day one was that it was impossible that Megadeth would be playing Tango: Too small, they’re too expensive and somethings just didn’t add up. On the other hand, Apocalyptica is confirmed to play at Yugong Yishan this September. Originally, rumors had them playing Beijing earlier this summer at the workers’ gym but nothing came out of that. They are reportedly confirmed for September 7th at Yugong Yishan which has the potential for being a madhouse considering the legions of Metallica fans in China and how this is the closest they’ll get to it for a little while. They’re also playing Mao Live in Shanghai. The Beijinger has announced the lineup for their New Music Showcase at 2 Kolegas. Looking good with Subs, Bad Mamasan, Residence A, Amazing Insurance Salesmen, Not There etc…. I can’t complain: half the bands on the lineup were there for ‘dazeFEAST. Hoever, I’m kinda bummed a little bit though because I really was hoping they’d go out and help discover new bands, bring [...]

A couple of months ago, the team behind Rock in China wiki and good ‘daze friends set out to collect samplers from all around China to get a feel for what was happening in the ‘core side of things… by ‘core they meant hardcore, nintendocore and all kinds of other terms i’d never heard off. I also discovered in the process that there was something called Folkcore, I kid you not. well, the baby is out on bandcamp and you can go download it: http://coreinchina.bandcamp.com/album/core-in-china lyrics & credits: http://wiki.rockinchina.com/w/CORE_IN_CHINA_(VA) Track Listing: 1.Why Lazy – Dying in the dream 04:35 2.NewTank – The Dreamer 04:22 3.Meat Sucks – Buried the Truths 04:54 4.Ordnance – Ask for a justification 03:44 5.Partisan – Selfish 03:18 6.Monkey King – Until You Come 05:31 7.Multi-Ego – End of Me 04:01 8.Mensheng – 故謠 Ballad of Fallen 04:54 9.Die In Velvet – 每天生每天死 03:59 10.Ashtemato – Joker 05:06 11.Saving Molly – To My Friend 02:58 12.Luktomo – We Are Luktomo 06:41 13.Beyond Cure – Self Destruction 04:34 14.DustFall – Dawn Late 06:02 15.Thyhazard – Liar 04:58 16.King Ly Chee – 在路上 feat. It’s also good to have the reigning kings of Hardcore in [...]
I had been hearing about King Ly Chee for quite sometime now but never really took the time to check them out until they were scheduled to stop by Beijing about a week ago. I was aware of their reputation and was pretty darn impressed when they got a shout out from none other than Biohazard during the Intercity Music Festival last year. How would they measure up live, in the flesh? I got to Mao a bit late but still managed to catch a few songs by Return the Truth who are growing on me. I’ve been impressed with each and everyone of their outings over the past few months even though i have not managed to catch a full set yet。 They were followed by The Falling who pretty much failed to convince me that night: Some of their songs sounded solid and the band had plenty of stage presence, more so than many of their brethren i’d dare say. but on too many songs, the singer was completely off! When they were on, especially towards the end of their set, they rocked. I must say that they’re much better now than when they opened for Lamb of God a few years back. but they’re gonna need to step up their game a few notches if they’re headed to Wacken Finally, it was time for King Ly Chee to come out and play… and that’s what they did!! The Hong Kong-ers came out like a bat out of [...]
I’m not sure how the week went by but it’s already Thursday and I’m not sure i’ve recovered from the onslaught of Sex in the Xity over the past few days. Still, as the weekend nears, time to check out what’s gonna keep me busy and entertained. It’s deceivingly quiet but there are some interesting little gems happening here and there. Let’s dive into it! Thursday April 5th Nirvana Tribute @ Temple Devils at the Crossroad and Rolling Bolling are on hand to pay tribute to late Kurt Cobain. It’s already been 18 years since we lost this iconic figure who went on to represent a generation’s angst much against his own desires. I’m amazed at how far reaching his influence is in China with tons of books written about him and even more bands copying Nirvana. This should be a fun opportunity to bring out the converse, striped T-shirts, geek glasses and sing with some marbles in your mouth. Friday April 6th King Lychee @ Mao Live Hong Kong’s reigning kings of hardcore are finally in the capital in support of their latest record. These guys are as legit as it gets with shoutouts from none other than Biohazard when they played intercity festival last year. Return the Truth, who put on one hell of a show last time i saw them, and XitneverhappenedX will be in charge of the opening bill. I’m looking forward to this puppy folks and might come out really bruised from it. Brutal I [...]
