Quickslants: Indiechina Celebrates, Apocalyptica, Shufuland, Tuya Festival and more..

There’s a mouth watering variety of great gigs coming your way this weekend folks. You want metal, you got it. you want reggae, you got it, you want pop, you got it etc… i’m pretty stoked about this one folks so let’s get it started! Friday Sept. 7th Apocalyptica @ Yugong So we might not have gotten Metallica in town but we get something close enough here.. The Cello version! Apocalytica has been making waves for years with their own take on the songs. The monsters of rock themselves have given them their endorsement and they are usually picky. Indie China Anniversary @Mako Indiechina.com celebrates 8 years of covering the scene and they’re bringing in the big guns for this celebration. We’re talking really big underground guns: Low Wormwood, Omnipotent Youth Society, Glow Curve as well as relative unknowns (for me) The Dyne. This might be one of the few chances people get to see OYS without it being silly crowded and sold out considering Mako has a bigger capacity than Mao at least. A great bill and a good celebration of people that have supported the music industry for a long time. That said.. 8 years and they can’t figure out how to make a poster for their big event??? WTF? Longshendao @ Mao Dreadlocks and linen with be all over the Mao pit as China’s reggae icons, longshendao, comes out to party! Expect a lot of funny smells in the air, good times, sing alongs and one hell [...]

Midi Awards 2011: Do you agree with the winners?

As much as I wanted to hangout with the Santas on Saturday and make the most of a rare not so cold, blue sky day in the Jing, I also wanted even more to head into the big warm dark cave that is Tango 3rd Floor and spend the entire day watching bands, drinking beer and seeing who got to take home a Midi brick or 2 (or 3 in the case of one lucky person!) So with BD on a plane downunder, Alex & I headed to Yonghegong to party with our favourite bands! If you’re not sure who was nominated this year, check out this cool clip from Midi introducing the awards and the nominees: And, drumroll please, here are your winners: Best New Band: Steely Heart Best Album Artwork Design Award: Pet Conspiracy 宠物同谋 “Pet Conspiracy” Best Instrumental Performance: Jì Yuán 纪元 (Air Carnival 空中狂欢节乐队- Guitar) Best Hard Rock Band: Ordnance 巨蟹座 Best Metal Band: Yaksa 夜叉 Best Female Vocalist: Jiāng Xīn 姜昕 Best Folk Musician: Hao Yun 郝云 (presented by Alex from Beijing Gig Guide!) MIDI Awards 2011 Nominations announced: The New Guard is IN

most of the blogosphere has given MIDI a lot of shit over the past 2 years for their awards and the incestuous nature of the nominees/winners. Fact is a lot of progress was made from the first edition to the second edition last year. This year, the jump is even bigger! The nomination process notice was given months ago and it looks like people have answered! http://www.midischool.cn/bbs/viewthread.php?tid=54374&extra=page%3D1 This one is probably the most diverse I’ve seen so far and I like it. Seeing fresh faces on there like Long Shen Dao is cool. Omnipotent Youth Society ciments their status as one of the better bands in China whereas Namo doesn’t really come through despite a busy year touring. Steely Heart, soon to release an album, makes an appearance as nominee for best new band which is a bit surprising in my book. Missing is also Xiao He with his latest release in the folk side but Su Yang makes a well deserved appearance. No Maybe Mars or Modern Sky artists, including MIDI favorite, Xie Tian Xiao who hasn’t done much this year. Here is the roughly translated list of nominees 1、“最佳年度摇滚专辑”提名 “Best Rock Album Year” : 龙神道《拥抱》- Long Shen Dao “Hug” 马木尔与IZ乐队《影子》 – Mamer & IZ “shadow” 苏阳《像草一样》- Su Yang “Like Grass” 左小祖咒《庙会之旅II》 Zuoxiao Zuzhou “Temple Journey II” 2、“最佳年度摇滚歌曲”提名 Best Rock Song of the Year: 川子《郑钱花》 Chuan Zi “zhèng qián huā” GALA《追梦赤子心》 GALA “The Purest Heart” 咖啡因《时光》 Caffeine “time” 龙神道《慢慢飞》 Long Shen Dao “slowly fly” 万能青年旅店《杀死那个石家庄人》 Omnipotent Youth Society [...]

Quickslants: Xiao He’s Silly Ballad, SUBS + Perdel Unholly Alliance and Happy 7 to Yugong

Man.. It’s Quickslants time already! This week has just flown past, I swear! Things got started yesterday at Temple with a lovely performance by the newly formed Lulu Galore & Sweet Leaf and we got a whole weekend to look forward to. It’s looking like a slightly understated weekend for livemusic in Beijing but in reality, there’s some pretty cool stuff happening. let’s see what we got! Thursday Sept. 22 New Blood of Rock @ Mao Live: King Kong Productions is putting together a cool little evening with some of the fresher local rock bands, most of which I never heard off and that might not be a bad thing. The advertised line up includes: The Hangover, The Ruined Flowers, Three Kings, Little Smart and Illness Sickness. Open Mic Thursdays @ Hot Cat Club: Hot Cat has been picking up steam lately with better performances and more people showing up. I’m curious to see how their open mic night is going in terms of mixing local musicians with expats. Also, I just miss a good open mic night vibe which i don’t think Beijing has had since the untimely departure of Beijing Rob over a year ago. Friday Sept. 23 Skarving & Friends @ 2 Kolegas: I’m becoming really sold of Skarving. musically, these guys are alright but the real draw is their enthusiastic and high energy stage shows. The band is having fun and you can’t help having fun while listening to them! It’s infectious. Bad Mamasan is also [...]

Yugong Yishan turns 6: re-TROS fun, Free The Birds wardrobe malfunction and Longshendao grows.

And then it turned six! some people might argue about how old the place is and what not considering it’s only been in its current location for 3 years but that’s a debate for some other time. Last friday was more about celebration and there was celebration to be made. The bill was appetizing and the price right at RMB50 for 5 entertaining bands. I got there on time to catch the reTROS. Now here’s a band that polarizes and draws a heck of a lot more conflicting opinions than even Xiao He. A lot of people like them and a lot of people loathe them… I’ve seen them a few times by now and I actually happen to like them. The music is not always my cup of tea but they are entertaining. In many ways, they are like Handsome Furs but they rock more! I really like Liu Min’s energy on stage and how she manages to play bass, drums, keyboards and sing at the same time. They have that habit of looking at each other a bit too much but it’s alright by me, I’m entertained enough by their playing. and that name, “rebuilding the rights of statues” is one of the better ones to come out of China. Next up was ,Daze favorite, Free the Birds with Ubuul making his official debut as Mao Mao’s replacement. I don’t need to rehash how much i like the bands and especially the lead singer who was in tip [...]
