Quickslants: Sick Time, Insurance Salesmen, Metal Health and more..

it might not seem like it but there is actually an interesting weekend coming up folks. I’ll keep it short and sweet for you all: Friday Nov 2 AIS @ Yugong Yishan The Amazing Insurance Salesmen are back at it with what’s becoming a monthly occurrence… i did this new rhythm of playing less shows and making their brand more special.. now let’s get some new songs in a CD and I’ll be a happy fan. Me Too are on opening duties. Buyi @ Jianghu The Ningxia quatuor heads over to Jianghu for one of their sit down performances. I saw them earlier this week at 2 Kolegas and they’re sounding a bit heavier than usual.. can’t say that’s a bad thing in my book. Saturday Nov 3 Trash till Death @ Club 13 out of the blue, CLub 13 reminds us that they’re still around with an interesting lineup going all day from 2 p.m. until midnight. The festivities are split into two parts. Part I: Putsch, Hellfire, Nine Treasures, Never Before, The Metaphor. Part II (8:30): Tractor, Los Crasher, Tengger Cavalry, Hellward, Explosicum. That is definitely a lot of bang for your buck Jacky Danny @ Hot Cat this might be one of those shows where the sound system at Hot Cat can be overlooked. Jacky Danny played their hearts out last week at Temple and i only heard good things about Executant of the Sword, the opening act. I wonder if Ricky Sixx is still on bass [...]

quickslants: covers, releases, Punks and Goths- a solid few days of music ahead

wow.. another round of early quickslants after missing out on them last week. But seriously folks, it looks like all the venues are coming out of the october holidays with some kick ass gigs lined up from wednesday to sunday! In some cases, more than one “must-see” per night and i’m not about to complain about this. Let’s kick it Wednesday Oct. 10 Youth Night @ Mao Live Kick Ass, Emitter, Devils at the Crossroad and Longway get together for a heavy cover night. expect lotsa AC/DC, Guns n Roses, Motorhead and more with some of the better young bands in town.. actually, can i still call them young? I mean these kids have been around for a while and the beards on some of them almost qualify them as old timers. Meng Zhi album launch @ 2 Kolegas The gang at 2 K is actually excited about this gig and even though i’ve never heard of the person in question, i know better than to doubt their opinions by now. He’s been playing around Beijing for a few years now and he’s looking to break out with this “Folk 2012″ release Thursday October 11 Michael Dallin @ Temple probably still one of the more underrated performers in the capital, Michael is still going strong with his original songs may it be alongside Bad Apples or his other projects. this particular night, expect an eclectic jam probably with a few musicians jumping in to contribute. Goth NIght @ Mao Live [...]

Quickslants: Festivalitus, Ningxia Force, Miserable Faith and More

Another weekend, another set of quickslants and a whole lotta music going on but who’s watching? Seriously, I think poor Zhangbei is having the distinction of being the festival with the least coverage this year, at least in the Anglophone blogosphere.. Maybe just an excessive case of festivalitus, a weird China-born disease stemming from excessive amounts of festivals using the same bands and sub-standard setups? oh well!! To be fair though, this year’s lineup is not bad but they really have not learned their lesson as far as sundays go: Everyone of the past two years, Sunday headliners played to an almost non-existent audience as folks rushed to get back to Beijing. Anyways, let’s see what’s taking place: Friday July 27th Buyi & Lidong @ 2Kolegas This is the party spot for the evening with two of the most talented bands out of Ningxia. Buyi has delivered on their performances for years and there is no doubting their chops. Since the release of their album, Lidong has moved up a few notches and can now claim the spot left vacant by Wu & the Side Effects while they regroup and re-record. 2 good bands, 2 Kolegas, all the buddies will be there and it’s gonna be a swell time. Red Pirates @ Hot Cat I like these cats and they always manage to show us a good time with their brand oh Hard Rock. Dave rocks the vox, the Drummer has one of the biggest smiles ever and the guitarist [...]

Gig Review Roundup: AIS, Bad Mamasan, Jacky Danny, Abominati, Me Too and more

Too many shows over the past week and not enough time to review them individually. Nevertheless, there is much to be said about each: Longjing @ Temple (March 7) I stopped by Temple thinking it would be an off night but turns out reggae outfit, Longjin, was playing. These guys have been touring China a lot lately, probably capitalizing on the reggae wave which i’m sure is just starting. Musically, they didn’t do too bad. I was less than impressed by the performance of frontwoman, Feifei! She looked bored up there and the audience responded in kindness. Considering these guys have been around since 2007, I expected a lot better. Randy Able Stable @ Temple (March 8th ) My first of two encounters with the stable that week. What can I say that I haven’t written about them yet? They’re good, they’re tight and they’re fun to watch. I love their covers but I’m also digging the originals that Randy and Co have been working on. Expect a single and a video to be out soon for the song ” Second bar to the right”. Coincidentally, if you haven’t, check out their soundcloud. Plenty of good recordings up there from their gigs around Beijing. AIS, Me Too & Abominati @ 2 Kolegas (March 9th) Me Too is improving folks.. these kids might still have a bright future on the scene if they keep at it. I’m digging what they’re doing and how they’re getting tighter on stage. Check them out [...]

Quickslants: Women, Insurance Payback, Re-TROS, Jue Festival, the Bookworm and more

oh yeah babay.. it’s heating up in Beijing and I’m not talking about the weather that’s taken a dip again. Beijing is finally fully awake and we’re getting to that point where it’s tough picking which show(s) to go to. This Saturday is a prime example with good stuff all over the goddamn city from 798 to Tango with both Jue Festival and the Bookworm Literary Festival starting. So, to quote The Beastie Boys: Let’s Kick it… Thursday March 8th: Women’s Day at Starfish: yeah, it’s a restaurant but the amazing Jess Meider is playing two sets between 6 and 8 pm, there will be whiskey cocktails courtesy of Stephanie Rocard and your truly. A cool celebration of women’s day in style to get your evening started! Randy Abel Stable @ Temple: How about that? what celebrated Women more than good old honky tonk tune from Beijing’s reigning kings of americana? I ran into Randy yesterday who casually mentioned new tunes and a possible marathon set with many songs touching on the topic of the day: Women… what can i say? grab a bourbon and holler along about double-timing, heartbreaking significant others. Light & Love at Mao: Not to be left out, Mao Live is putting together one a power punk show with some of Beijing’s underground female-fronted bands: First Medal, Cool Fish and more. This one will be a young student affair most likely and could be a cool little distraction for the early Gulou crowd. Friday March 9th: [...]

Quickslants: Brain Failure, re-TROS, Wu Hongfei, Fish and Low Wormwood…

last week was a small but fun set of musical offerings that culminated with 2 fun performances by La Pegatina and some pretty crappy stuff b Ma Tiao and Mitabe…still, I won’t let that get me down a look forward to some good rock n roll in the next few days starting tonight! Some interesting gigs with RE-TROS, Novaheart, brain failure, flying mantas as well as Low Wormwood to look forward to. Let’s see how it all adds up: Wednesday Nov 9: F**king the Trouble @ Mao: Residence A and Flying Mantas headline a nice heavy night at Mao where I coincidentally have not been for a long time. It might be time to head back over there! Both Ruby and I are extremely taken by that band’s live performances and I’m dying to catch the Mantas with new bass player. The lineup also includes some new names: Illness Sickness and Pirate Pistols. Not a bad wednesday offering. Liu Yusi & friends @ Jianghu: human boombox, Liu Yusi, headlines this now weekly series every wednesday at Jianghu with local country bluegrass roots acts. It’s also free which ain’t bad y’all. Tonight’s guests are the Ring Road Ramblers…. nice name! Thursday Nov 10 Ding Fenghua @ Jianghu: Film director, producer and folk guitarist, Ding Fenghua, is your host for this calm and quiet night over by the hutongs. I have not had the pleasure of seeing him before but by all accounts, it sounds like it could be special. One of [...]
