Quickslants: Women’s Day, Jue, Punks and Japanese Noise

A bit of a late quickslants edition but as they say, better late than never. A whole lotta things going on for the weekend and even early next week so let’s get right into it starting with all the women’s day festivities around town:

ember swift

Fri March 8

Women’s Day @ 2 KOlegas
Residence A, Wu and the Side Effects allong with some ROlling Bowling rockabilly will be providing the entertainment over at the drive in. I believe women get in for free and the gig is very much worth it. It might actually be quite hopping and crowded but in 2 KOlegas Fashion, it’s all good. Not a bad start to a Friday

Ember Swift @ Temple
Well Well Well… my favourite Rock n roll mama hits up temple and who better to lead Women’s Day festivities than her? I’m not sure if it’s her solo or with the full band but it will be good either ways. Guo Jian, LSD frontman, will be DJing afterwards.

marsenfolie
Sat March 9th

Mars En Folie @ Yugong Yishan
a celebration of all things francophone over at Yugong brings together an eclectic mix of musicians and lot of French folks if you’re into that sort of things. They usually party hard and you’re gonna be in it for a good time. so, why not “Laisser les bon temps rouler”. Some of the acts include Kl Pelgag, Benjamin Schoos & Sophie Galet, Les Mauvaises Langues and Junior Tshaka… who?? yeah..

Nostalgia @ School
Two of my favourite young bands around hit wudaoying for a dose of emo rock n roll… yes, i’m recommending emo and it’s not all that band. I’ve spoken at lengths about Twinkle Star whom i adore.. worth going in for their cool liveshows. Steely Heart seems to be slwoly coming back to their former bored-rocker selves and that’s a good thing in my book. Two other bands on the bill but i can’t say i know much about them at the moment.

Djan San @ JIanghu
THe mad frenchman is holding an release party for 4 records at the same time as he reminded me yesterday. I’m sure there’s gonna be a fair bit of experimentation going on along with some interesting takes on old classics. By now, if you haven’t heard his take on Caravan, you’ve been missing out.

Sun March 10th

Punks @ Mao
Misandao leads a punk legion over to gulou for one solid sunday night of moshing. They’re getting help from Gumbleed, Discord and Hell City just to name a few. Mao is really stepping up their game on sundays with some pretty good gigs as of late. It’s good to see them planning smart.

Noise @ 2 Kolegas
I don’t know how else to explain this: Kawabata Makoto comes back to the drive in with his experimental style and gets some help from other Beijing noise makers. I ordinarily would shy away from anything like this but I’ve got it from good authority that the guy freaking rocks, at least when he is flanked with his Japanese collective “acid mothers temple”

THere u go y’all.. happy rocking

2012 Beijing 9th Annual Punk Festival Schedule and promo video

A lot of bands playing this weekend all over the place folks at the guys at Mao have gone ahead with releasing the schedule of performances for both days.
This is a habit they should do for every freaking show instead of drawing straws last minute.
Anyways, here you go so you can plan your moshing weekend.

The guys organizing it ( i.e Lei Jun of Misandao) have really done one hell of a job this year with even a promotional video showing the unity of the punk scene!!

I’ll see you in the pit!

Punks, 16min, Dialects, Releases and other tidbits

It’s nice to have time to ramble on again… been way too busy around here for the last few weeks.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that tomorrow, Saturday August 11th, is the mother of Punk Reunion/Charity shows at 2 kolegas. Everyone has been pitching in and helping out, online and offilne, to make this particular gig a success. Check out this interview of Dave O’Dell over at Shanghai 24/7, this little feature on The World of Chinese by Liz Tung on some of the original Punks of Beijing and let’s not forget Pangbianr sitting down with Jerry Chan. I’m hoping the event rocks and rain doesn’t fuck things up.

Our favorite boot boys are heading overseas!! Misandao is booked to play Germany plenty of European dates folks so if you’re a Germany based blog reader, please try and catch them. This is really the year of China in Germany as their dates pretty much comes on the heels of Chinese bands at Wacken. check full schedule here: http://misandao.blogspot.com

Sticking with Punks, there’s a lot of chatter about some interesting lineup changes coming up for one of our favorite bands here over at ‘daze. Keep your eyes peeled on this space or make it to the Beijinger’s music showcase next week for a taste of SUBS v.2012 Things might get interesting. I’d love to say more but I’d rather tease, it’s just more fun that way.

I managed to catch 16 min yesterday at Temple and came out positively impressed. These cats are young but talented and they confirmed my the first impression i had months ago when i heard them for the first time. Robyn is a pretty talented guitarist, Sindy has one hell of a voice and the bass player got skill. I’d love to see how they grow up as a band with their mix of trip-hop meets blues and folk. If they develop just a tad bit more stage presence and change tempos up in their sets, we’ll have another winner on our hands. They pulled off a beautful version of Leonard Cohen’s Allelujah not to mention that they did justice to their own song “Original Desire”… Check their douban and listen to a song called Circle– tell me Sindy doesn’t sound like Helen Feng?

On the random side of things, I came accross this lovely piece on China Digital Times about Zhou Yunpeng and Singing in Dialects.
http://chinadigitaltimes.net/2012/01/zhou-yunpeng-we-want-to-sing-in-dialect/
Old Zhou is undoubtedly one of the more profilic social voices around here dishing out tons of slaps in his lyrics but this one took me by surprise. I spend a lot of time hanging out with musicians that speak and sing in dialects; I’ve actually not noticed any problem to that end. I wonder if someone has?

Finally, mark down september 1st on your calendar: Bad Mamasan album release at Temple. It’s gonna be insane!

Quick Slants: The Punk Uprising, Boredom BrigadeS, Backyard Secrets and a Rant

This is really a boring summer musically folks. I love my Beijing bands but really, even the quickslants are becoming redundant with the same bands playing every week and in some case, 3 or 4 times a week. I understand that musicians must make a living as well but someone has to sit down and slam some sense into them about dilluting their brands. It’s just not doable any more and it’s hard to muster any sort of excitement as far as seeing some of them. I wish they could go back and see what Michael Petis did with Joyside and how they boomed after that. Anyone remember Pet Conspiracy’s monthly shows at Yugong Yishan and how much of a packed affair that was? I don’t mind so much Out of town artists are now doing a couple of dates a week in Beijing in case people can’t make it to one gig and they play different sides of town but not the local ones… loses all charm— it’s another type of Boredom Brigade.
This week is looking a bit different though with some interesting one off gigs that might make me feel a little better about the scene and I’m quickslanting things i don’t usually do.

Thursday August 9th

16 Min @ Temple
I’ve loved these guys sound since the first time i stumbled on their douban last year but i still have not gotten around to seeing them live. Maybe tonight is the night! It’s an interesting fusion of genres, quite reminiscent of Morsheeba. Something Fresh that could be worth a detour.

Jamie Hutchings @ Jianghu
Visiting Aussie artist courtesy of Your Town Touring stops by Beijing for two dates, first one being thursday. I’m listening to him right now as I write this and it’s pretty good! I’m digging the melodies and especially the voice. Could be a little breath of fresh air…. it’s bluesy, folky and got quite some depth to it. I’m not sure how different the solo stuff is from his band stuff but i do like the voice and I’m gonna have to catch some of it.

Friday August 10th

Slap @ Jianghu
word for Rhyme, one of Beijing’s most underrated bands. They have their own style, provide original music and they are actually quite good at it. Tian Xiao, who happens to own jianghu, is one of my favorite musicians around. Be warned though: The wine pours are tiny!!!

Secret Backyard @ Mako
Could be the sleeper hit of the week folks. Secret Backyard (秘密後院 mimi hou yuan) mixes poetry, deep soulful vocals and traditional Chinese instruments to deliver a unique experience!
check out their douban for a sneak peak I’m really digging this right now and gonna have to go hunting for their CDs in Gulou this week. And by the looks of it, they got a few released already.

Saturday August 11

Ban Bian Punk Charity Concert @ 2 Kolegas
This is undoubtedly the best gig on this month. Dave O’Dell is back in town and bringing the old boys back together from a night of fun, punk rock, memorabilia auctions and memories.
Gao Wei ( formerly Underbaby), Misandao, Catcher in the Rye, Flyx and more old school punks just to name a few. The proceeds will benefit Half the Sky foundation! It might be a great opportunity to get your hands on Dave’s book, Inseparable, with I reviewed not too long ago on here. Rain or Shine, you better be there folks. IT WILL BE WORTH IT.

Sunday August 12

Mao Livehouse Free Party
Mao decided to throw a little party with a bunch of bands playing for your pleasure and enjoyement, all free. Early Bus, Locomotive Gentlemen, and others on hand for musical entertainment.
Show starts at 7:30 pm

Plenty of others gigs all around town all weekend folks including Friday night at 2 kolegas just to mention one more. Jamie Hutchins also plays Hot Cat on Friday and Secret Backyard might show up at Jianghu on Sunday.

Quickslants: IZ returns, Book Swap, Olympic Rock, Simple Plan, Folks of the World and more

Welcome to 2012 darlings… let’s make sure it rocks!
For this first edition of the quick slants, we find ourselves all over the spectrum with choices. Some of them definitely rocking! It might seem deceivingly underwhelming but there are some real gems hidden out there. Let’s kick it!

Thursday Jan 5th

IZ @ Temple
As you might have noticed, Temple is making more and more noise out here! This week, they’re scoring huge points by getting IZ to make an rare appearance in Beijing. The band is fresh off their world tour in support of the album Kolengke that I’ve shortlisted as one of my favorite albums of 2011. Temple will be an interesting space for them to do their space/kazakh/improv rock. Potentially the best gig of the week.

Friday Jan 6th

Folks of the World @ 2 Kolegas:
Appalachia, Ningxia and Mongolia come together on this night at the drive in in the forms of The Randy Abel Stable, Lidong and Ajinai…. I’ve been keeping an eye on this date for quite some time now and I’m definitely looking forward to it, mostly because I have not seen Ajinai in a while. Lidong are sure to light up the crowd with their folksy tunes (becoming ear-worms to some extent) and the Stable speaks to my inner redneck.

Simple Plan @ Yugong Yishan:
I’m not a big fan of pop-punk but I must admit these kids are intriguing: Been together for almost 15 years, getting a worldwide following and staying humble by the sounds of it. The’ve done everything right in terms of getting their Chinese dates worked out by promoting the hell out of the show, getting local scenesters involved and even working out a duet with a Chinese pop-star. I’m curious to see how the locals react to this. Despite the 200+ price tag, I expect this to be a busy sold out affair.

Saturday Jan 7th

Book Swap & Board Games @ Sequoia
The monthly meet up of fun loving, book-swapping, game-playing, beijingers is sure to be a blast. Come and relax, meet likeminded folks and just have a good time. From 2 to 6 pm @ Sequoia cafe inside the jianguomen diplomatic compound.

Rock Spring Festival Gala @ Olympic Sport Center
this is almost a festival out of turn… the list of participants is pretty impressive with Miserable Faith, Misandao, Heaven, Liquid Oxygen Can and the Face just to name a few. It’s a bit of a strange location and the tickets are interestingly priced… 107 and 201. I can really figure out if this is indoors or outdoors but It’s an indoor show with an impressive stage setup if i’m to believe the pictures on weibo. here is the link to more information and to buy the tickets: http://www.damai.cn/ticket_31454.html

V-Rock Festival @ Mao Live:
Interesting concept for a weird evening at Mao live.. they’re promising visuals, cosplay (which I had to google), gifts, mystery guests and a whole lot more! oh yeah, they have music too courtesy of Joker, Army of Jade Kirin and Providence’G. If you’re into fetishy things, you might wanna be here!

National Holiday Quickslants: Modern Sky, Super Ningxia, Old What fun, Charity and more

It’s been a beautiful beginning for october in Beijing with blue skies, mild temperatures and freaking empty roads… oh yeah! For those of us fortunate enough to be in Beijing and enjoying the quiet, it’s pretty cool. That said though, nightlife and music events are plentiful for the next few days… heck, there are so many that they get their own quickslants. Of special not is the charity show on October 8th at Mako Livehouse with Zhou Yunpeng raising money to benefit kids with haemophilia

Modern Sky: October 3-5
I’m not even contemplating heading over to this one but it is happening over in huairou and the usual suspects will all be there. If you can brave the transportation issues and the disaster that modern sky run events are, then you should be fine. Head over to the Beijinggigguide for updated schedule of events.

Monday Oct 3:

Pairs @ Mao:
More Shanghai bands doing the trip up north. They’re slapped with a bunch of indie bands but these kids are actually a lot heavier, noiser and more interesting. I’m really tempted to check them out tonight at Mao. They play along with Cassette, Me Too and Next Year’s Love.

Buyi @ Jianghu:
Haven’t seen my ningxia boys in a little while and I’ve actually never seen them at jianghu come to think about it. Heck, I haven’t been to Jianhu in a few weeks and this sounds like a nicer evening than the potential crapout at Mao. I hear they buyi gang is prepping some new songs yet again so this could get interesting. small factoid that might only interest me: I get on average 4 to 10 people a day that get to the blog through google searching for “buyi china autumn music”.. go figure.

Tuesday Oct. 4

Super Ningxia @ 2Kolegas:
Yup, it’s another one of those and it might end at dawn judging by the rare form every one is at lately. Lao Da, Buyi, Whai, Nucleus, Lidong, Skarving and Summer Band…. not a bad lineup over there. Let’s just hope that they don’t take forever in between sound checks otherwise they’re gonna be playing til early morning. I’m curious to hear Lao Da’s voice on this one since he’s been playing pretty regularly lately. WHAI is in the running for best new band of 2011 in my book with Liu Miao, Zhang Wei and Chen Zhong doing some interesting prog rock…

Misandao @ Old What:
Part of the Old What? bar 10 years celebrations, the punk kids come out to play. Misandao, The Unsafe and SOchu Legion just to name a few will be on deck providing the loud Ois.. so get your Doc Martens and head on over to the side of the forbidden city for some punk.

Wed Oct 5

Mamer/IZ & Hsu-Nami @ Mao Live
This is quite an intriguing show: We last saw IZ as they were getting ready to embark on a mini-world tour following their last release… I’m stocked to have them back in Beijing. Hsu-Nami just sound like one bitching good band name. Also prog rock, hailing from new york and playing the erhu… very high potential if you ask me.

Mademoiselle @ 2Kolegas:
The Montreal Minx takes the gang out to the drive thru for some good old fashioned swinging times with lovely chanson and dirty ditties. Marie Claude and her gang are always pretty darn fun to play with. A joy day in day out to listen to.

Randy Able Stable @ Salud:
Yes, the stable and some rum.. that could be an interesting option. I’ve been waiting for them to come out and play some other venue than VA for a while now so I could see how they sound this might be the right opportunity depending on how the night goes with other shows.
cancelled.. see the Randy Abel Stable sunday night at Jianghu.

Thursday Oct 6

Lone @ Old What:
Lone is Bian Yuan’s ( Ex-Joyside) solo folk project. I’ve been dying to catch it for a little while as I really dig the guy’s style. his shaky English interpretations have a little je-nesais-quoi like when he covers Alabam Song with accordion and guitar… I love the recordings on douban and want nothing more than to see it live. Check out the songs on douban http://site.douban.com/lone/

Friday Oct 7

Carsick Cars @ Old What
It pains me to list this one but it might end up being a special gig. I expect crowds to spill out of the sidewalk as Beijing’s young and old come in force to see carsick cars and Soviet Pop. Rumors are that Zhang Si’An might also be making an appearance that night.

Saturday Oct 8

7 Kids want to Grow Up @ Mako
Zhou Yun Peng comes back to Beijing and brings some of his closest friend folksters for an evening of heavenly tunes at Mako Livehouse. They’re aiming to raise some money for children suffering from haemophilia, with support from Su Yang, Shao Xiaomao, Wu Tun, Wang Juan and Ma Yulong. This is one hell of a noble cause, worth coming to shuangjing for.

Black Cat Bone @ 2 Kolegas
The bone, Kolegas, a saturday night…. you know how this one will end folks and it won’t have to be pretty, just loud, crewed, tattooed and eventually bruised. My liver is aching just thinking about this night….

Quickslants: Bone Rock, Free Kolegas, Lao Da’s Revenge, Old What Turn 9 and more

October holidays are straight ahead folks with tons and i mean TONS of music opportunities in Beijing including festivals and what not…. Basically you gotta really try hard to not find anything interesting. I’ll do an October Holiday Quickslants later to deal with the flurry of shows next week. For now, here’s what the end of the week looks like:

Wednesday Sept. 28

Bone @ Mao Live:
Admittedly, I never heard of these guys before Ruby mentioned they were playing and I’m not sure what they are like. That said, they’re playing along with Residence A whom I have not seen in quite some time and same goes for Me Too. Yang Tiao is one that I’ve been meaning to check out for a while. Should be a good mid-week rocker

Tha Knutz @ jianghu:
Ok I admit it. I’m superficial enough to go check out a band based on their name sometimes! This would be one of those cases if I didn’t remember the band’s name popping out all over the city’s Jazz venues. Tia’s voice works really well for that lounge/jazz/soul mix even though she sounds like she might be having a few issues with really high notes. Still, Definitely worth a look IMHO.
The songs repeating on myspace started giving me a headache!

Thursday Sept 29:

Marianne Dissard @ D22:
I saw her two weeks ago at yugong yishan.. a prelude to her appearance at Black Rabbit festival. I enjoyed her performance despite the lack of a live band. She has tons of personality and I would love to see how she interacts onstage with band members. It’s Rock Chanson, basically smart assed americana that is quite enoyable.. even more if you understand the lyrics. I had the pleasure of chatting with Marianne and she’s a really cool cat.

Friday Sept. 30

Trasher Mag Night @ 2Kolegas:
Ok so we have 4 pretty darn good bands: SUBS, RUSTIC, LSDemons and Roadshit… and guess what? The show is FREE and there’s an OPEN BAR.. uh? what’s not to like? People of the world…..I’m asking you! What is not to like? Is there a reason to go anywhere else?

Lao Da & Song Yuzhe @ Jianghu:
Yeah… these two playing together at Jianghu are one of the few reasons I “could” consider skipping 2 Kolegas… probably a better option anyways for those of you that are more on the folk side of things. after what seemed like years dealing with bad health, Lao Da is back in full form and his name popping up in many places nowdays which brings a smile to my face. He’s like Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave all rolled into one body. Song Yuzhe ain’t bad either by the way… these two are icons of the folk world in China.

NovaHeart @ Yugong Yishan:
I’m not a fan of electro/dj stuff but I am a Helen Feng fan. The lady is multitalented and while I might not appreciate her latest efforts, I’m sure some of the readers would. She’s debuting her new solo effort, NovaHeart friday night at Yugong Yishan and those in the know seem to like it…. so it’s definitely worth a mention!

Saturday Oct 1:

Kind of a chill night folks… nothing out of the extraordinary happening with some decent heavy music at Mao Live as well as a reggae party at 2 Kolegas.

Old What! Anniversary day 1
Skarving and rolling bowling headline day one of celebrations for the Old What Bar’s 9th year anniversary… damn!!! 9 freaking years already! That almost makes it the granddaddy of live music venues in Beijing considering all the other ones have gotten chai-ed by now. big up big up…

Sunday Oct 2:

I love Guo’An @ Mao:
Held for the second night in a row at Mao live, this one has all the usual suspect that prowl the streets of gulou at night: The Unsafe, Misandao, Early Bus, Gum Bleed as well as Rolling Bowling. I’d say it’s a usual Mao live party and that’s not always bad. I’m curious to see how GumBleed sounds now. same thing for the Unsafe since they have been playing more lately and the jitters from punk fest must be gone.

Chunqiu @ Gulou 121
Well, almost forgot this little sucker but thanks to Ruby for the reminder. ChunQiu plays a set at Gulou 121 on sunday. I am not sure if it’s acoustic/electric or maybe both but I know the guys at the venue love the band and they try to make their shows special. I just really wish the seating was better. Still, Chunqiu fucking rocks!

quickslants: Punks in Love, Reggae Parties and a Swapping good time

A strange weekend ahead in Beijing with some pretty low key events taking place all around the city, a few of which have really cool potential. The biggie of Course is the 8th annual Punk Festival at Mao Livehouse.. It might be one of the few times ‘daze and Beijing Gig Guide agree as to the “gig of the week”

Friday August 5th:

All My Faith Lost @ The One Club:
They’re described as Italian neo-folk whatever that means but they sound halfway decent. Apparently, the visuals at their gigs are quite impressive and they’re good about creating an athmosphere. It’s definitely a sleeper hit IMHO. I haven’t been to The One in quite some time so I might have to trip it there.

Hollow Shadow @ Hot Cat Club:
This one screams “car crash waiting to happen” but again, it could be a good one. front-man of Goth Band IDH releasing his own solo effort which is supposedly more on the folksy side of things. In a night where not much else is really happening, it could be cool to check out something different.

Satuday August 6th:

Bookswap & Board Games @ Sequoia:
The August edition of this monthly event will be bittersweet with us saying goodbye to one of the original founding members as she prepares her post-China life. So come by between 2 and 6 pm for bookswapping, board gaming and saying goodbye to one of the original founders of this Beijing institution.

Punks in Love @ Mao:
I’ve been waiting for this one since last year! SUBS, Misandao, the Unsafe, Hell City and tons of other bands will all be at Mao paying tribute to the gods of boots, Mohawks, Oi Rock and Oi Boys. Heavy sponshorship on the this edition by Doc Marten and Vedel Beer. SUBS will be premiering their new lineup officially in Beijing whereas The Unsafe will be releasing their long awaited new album. I’m also looking forward to seeing Unregenerate Blood again after their last outing at Mao. Really cool bands folks

Sunday August 7th:

Suede @ Worker’s Gymnasium:
This one is bound to be jam packed as SUede is one of those bands with great popularity in China. During their hiatus, frontman Brett Anderson kept their name relevant by coming in often enough and this hard work looks to pay off. For me, the band will always be synonymous with the song Film Star that Eddie Izzard used on the opening credits to one of his DVDs.

Reflector + Tiger BoB @ Tango:
Reflector headlines this last series of Battle of the bands at Tango 3rd Floor. Judging by how other legs of the competition have been, this one should prove popular. Reflector is a big enough draw on their own merit depending on which bands actually made the cut, this could end up a promising bill.

Tuesday August 9:

Neon Tree @ Tango:
we had a contest on ‘daze to win a bunch of tickets for this show that drew decent interest. The folks behind this gig have really gotten the promotion machine rolling and I’d be curious to see the turnout for this show. I’m personally not a huge fan of the Neon Tree but they’re definitely not offending me. Pet Conspiracy and a yet unnamed band share opening duties.

Quickslants: Beijing Prom, dazeFEAST, Residence A and more fun weekend goodies

Hope you got some rest last weekend folks cause this upcoming one will require some serious stamina from all of you considering all the fun stuff taking place in Beijing over the next few days! so, what we got?

Wednesday June 22nd:

Misandao @ Mao:
Misandao is tons of fun! I love these guys because they’re genuinely punk to the bone, skinhead bootboys that bring on the Oi punk like no one else. I just saw them last week at Mao and they have not lost a beat. Newcomers, The Rudeness, open things with their brand of ska/reggae/punk. Not a bad humpday gig

Thursday June 23:

Paper Tigre & RE-TROS @ Yugong Yishan:
I couldn’t care less about papier tigre but any opportunity to watch the RE-TROS should be cherished.. these cats perform with such amazing passion. Label them whatever you want, they put on a show each and everytime that cannot leave you indifferent.

Ember & Jess @ 2Kolegas:
Take Ember Swift with her folk pop and the Laowai Song, Jess Meider’s Heavenly Stems and you got yourself a lovely night of lilith fair type music to sooth you soul by.

Friday June 24th:

Beijing Prom @ The Bookworm:
This one is so bizarre that it deserves a mention. Our good friend the Prom Queen has decided to go back in time and party like it was 1990 for those that remember the era. You’re expected to dress for Prom, with heavy emphasis on sequins, then mingle with likeminded folks in the spirit of baccus and letting loose. Yes, dress for prom and be there ready to dance your rear end off.

Residence A @ D-22:
They’re on of my favorite bands from this generation and have tons, tons, tons of potential. They’re back from a China tour which should have made them even better! If you’re in wudaokou and can’t for whatever reason make it to chaoyang, that’s one hell of show you;re in for.

DH & The Hellcats @ 2 Kolegas:
I’ve spoken so much about these cats that I feel I’m overdoing it! There’s almost no other place in town i’d rather be when they’re playing. Infectious, entertaining, fun, talented, amusing etc…. I could keep finding good things to say about them from now til the end of the year. Beijing’s Skarving opens things with their smooth as a baby’s bottom SKA.

Saturday June 25th:

dazeFEAST @ 2Kolegas:
It’s simple: 14 bands, roasted lamb, outdoor picnic during the afternoon, indoor madness at night… and it’s all FREEEEEEE. I expect this little celebration that yours truly is throwing to be one hell of a memorable party and we’ll be leaving when the cows come back/leave home, whatever is more appropriate. Starts at 15:00h! Call me biased but I expect this one to rock

Return of Rock @ Mao:
If ‘dazeFEAST wasn’t taking place, this is where you’d find me! The Dancers, Casino Demon, Brain Failure and more are set to rock the shit out of Mao Live for what may well be the last time ever you’ll see 2 of those bands perform. Hardcore music for hardcore fans. I really wish i could go but i hear there’s something else in town.

quickslants: French Teenage Riot, Sparrow returns and some food for the mind

Hallo… miss me? Of course not! Especially with the lovely Ruby at the helm while I was away keeping things in control and bringing the goodies. Well, I’m baaaaack and ready for some good music to recover from almost 3 weeks of deprivation. We’re on home stretch for the world cup but there are definitely some great goodies on the menu this week:

Wednesday July 7:

Malakwa @ Yugong Yishan: Never heard of them before but I really like the promo picture and the descriptions. Support courtesy of Evening News ( liked what i saw of them a few months back), First Day of Autumn and Mythomania. Not a bad gig to ease back into the week and it’s only 30rmb at the door. Looking forward to hearing the improved sound system at Yugong Yishan.

Thursday July 8:

nothing of substance so it might be worth going to the lesser known venues and experiment.

Friday July 9:

Abigail & Friends @ The One: The sparrow returns and brings her friends along for an evening of jolly good and inspiring roots music. Expect Hanggai to make a few appearance as well as other guests! This one might be the highlight of the week for me. See the 10 questions i did with Abigail last year for reference.

Misandao 10th @Mao: been a while since i mentioned Mao Live on here. If roots ain’t your thing, this is definitely one hell of a good alternative with one of the better punk bands in China. Misandao is old school, they live, eat, breathe and sleep punk in its purest form.. I wish Abigail picked another night to visit.

Saturday July 10:

July bookswap & Boardgames @ Sequoia: our monthly gathering at Sequoia Cafe to swap books, shoot the shit, meet new people and have a jolly good time playing board games. been doing it for 2 years by now… how time flies.. how time flies! starts at 2:00 pm

Jess & Ember @Bookworm: Jess Meider and Ember Swift unite for an evening of songwriting and storytelling at the bookworm. This is the last opportunity to catch Jess before she heads back to the US for the summer. Expect smooth vocals, soothing sounds and just 2 of the most beautiful smiles Beijing has to offer.
