quickslants: covers, releases, Punks and Goths- a solid few days of music ahead

wow.. another round of early quickslants after missing out on them last week. But seriously folks, it looks like all the venues are coming out of the october holidays with some kick ass gigs lined up from wednesday to sunday! In some cases, more than one “must-see” per night and i’m not about to complain about this. Let’s kick it Wednesday Oct. 10 Youth Night @ Mao Live Kick Ass, Emitter, Devils at the Crossroad and Longway get together for a heavy cover night. expect lotsa AC/DC, Guns n Roses, Motorhead and more with some of the better young bands in town.. actually, can i still call them young? I mean these kids have been around for a while and the beards on some of them almost qualify them as old timers. Meng Zhi album launch @ 2 Kolegas The gang at 2 K is actually excited about this gig and even though i’ve never heard of the person in question, i know better than to doubt their opinions by now. He’s been playing around Beijing for a few years now and he’s looking to break out with this “Folk 2012″ release Thursday October 11 Michael Dallin @ Temple probably still one of the more underrated performers in the capital, Michael is still going strong with his original songs may it be alongside Bad Apples or his other projects. this particular night, expect an eclectic jam probably with a few musicians jumping in to contribute. Goth NIght @ Mao Live [...]

Quickslants: Hanggai Unplugged, Acoustic Punk and a Double Temple Celebration

It’s looking deceivingly like a quiet musical weekend in Beijing but don’t be fooled folks. There are some pretty sweet gigs taking place over the next few days while the city prepares for the upcoming festivals… let’s see what’s cooking and not necessarily good looking. Thursday July 19th Whai @ Temple They got ups, downs and tons of potential but they’re still looking for a direction. It’s really interesting to see this band grow up and mature! Now with the addition of a DJ, the sound has an interesting depth but as we were saying with a buddy not too long ago, I wonder what they would sound like if they dropped the DJ, added a Keyboard and had more guitar. Catch them at Temple to see another step in their evolution. Folk Night @ Lao What I don’t know why but just looking outside my window and seeing the ugliness of the gray skies, I get in a strange state of mind and want a little folk. Old What has it tonight with an assortment of local folk singer including Sichuan’s liangzi wom i never heard off before but can be interesting. I’m overdue for a visit down there actually. Friday July 20th Hanggai @ 2 Kolegas If you choose one gig this week, make it this one! I expect the place to be packed, lamb to be roasted and people having a jolly good time grasslands-style. Be warned that the band will play early by 2 Kolegas standard [...]

Quickslants: Lots of Insurance, Subs-tacular, Tributes, Electric Shadows Anniversary and more

After a few weeks of balls-to-the-wall type of shows, we got a nice chilled weekend to recharge the batteries before facing another onslaught for weeks! and that’s why you’re getting minislants folks! Let’s get to it: Thursday April 12 Rock Tigers Rolling Bolling @ 2 Kolegas Chances are this is not gonna happen as I’m writing this a few hours before the gig and it’s hard to get official confirmation. Worse case scenario is that you’ll be in the drive-in listening to Rolling Bolling. If by miracle the tigers show up, then you’ll get Kimchibilly aka rockabilly made in Korea. I heard a few things online and loved the energy! Here’s hoping! Tigers won’t be there! Li Jianbin @ Jianghu You might remember him from the band “Dong Fang Hong” or Low Wormwood’s 2009 tour, Lao Li is one of those Lanzhou multi-instrumentalists with a sharp guitar, yellow river flavor and folk credit. He’s releasing his new album, Moonlight Through Flowers, with an intimate performance over at Jianghu. It could and should be enjoyable. He reminds me a lot of Dong Zi. Friday April 13 Rock Night @ Yugong Yishan Amazing Insurance Salesmen, Wu & Side Effects, Devils at the Crossroad and Dwaas are on hand to deliver a big rock night for those of you that get there. There’s some pretty good raw talent on there folks and it will be loud.. that is if Yugong’s sound holds up. Dwaas is the unknown on there because from what i [...]
