the big expected gig of the week would have been the Dongpai Folk Festival at 2 KOlegas but if you’re read the site yesterday, you know that it is pretty much dead in the water. I got to hear various versions/reasons for the cancellation but none of them really makes sense at this point. Either ways, it’s fucked! Still, there’s a number of cool little gigs around town starting tonight. Let’s see what the consolation prizes are: Thursday May 9: Coprocephalic @ 2 Kolegas Death Metal from California/Taipei… that’s how these kids are being labeled and it sounds intriguing enough. In pure 2K tradition, we know nothing about the gig or the band other than they’ve been around since 2011. Options are scarce enough that this makes an appearance on the slants for a thursday. Punk @ XP: Discord along with Flyx, Brother Tough and Found Amber are headed to the west side of town for a mohawk night at XP. Nothing out of this world but surely a decent enough option for those craving a little 2 to 3 chord action with badly tuned instruments but fun nevertheless. Friday May 10: The Randy Abel Stable/Shun Kikuta @ CD Blues Probably the best show from this series of Blues Festival when Beijing’s resident Americana hellraisers pair up with one of Japan’s more prolific guitar players for a night of good mellow tunes. If you were looking for an excuse to head over there, this is the best night. Just remember [...]

A bit of a late quickslants edition but as they say, better late than never. A whole lotta things going on for the weekend and even early next week so let’s get right into it starting with all the women’s day festivities around town: Fri March 8 Women’s Day @ 2 KOlegas Residence A, Wu and the Side Effects allong with some ROlling Bowling rockabilly will be providing the entertainment over at the drive in. I believe women get in for free and the gig is very much worth it. It might actually be quite hopping and crowded but in 2 KOlegas Fashion, it’s all good. Not a bad start to a Friday Ember Swift @ Temple Well Well Well… my favourite Rock n roll mama hits up temple and who better to lead Women’s Day festivities than her? I’m not sure if it’s her solo or with the full band but it will be good either ways. Guo Jian, LSD frontman, will be DJing afterwards. Sat March 9th Mars En Folie @ Yugong Yishan a celebration of all things francophone over at Yugong brings together an eclectic mix of musicians and lot of French folks if you’re into that sort of things. They usually party hard and you’re gonna be in it for a good time. so, why not “Laisser les bon temps rouler”. Some of the acts include Kl Pelgag, Benjamin Schoos & Sophie Galet, Les Mauvaises Langues and Junior Tshaka… who?? yeah.. Nostalgia @ School Two of [...]
a lot of things been happening in Beijing lately but I haven’t actually gotten around to bringing them up on ‘daze… let’s do a bit of roundup. First up, the competition for China representative at the 2012 Summersonic festival in Japan.. after what seemed like a heated competition, a band a warned you about a long time ago, The Power Powder, won the right to fly over and represent Beijing. Congrats to the kids for all the hard work they put in and for taking the competition seriously. When i first saw them at Kolegas last year, I felt they were special and they proved me right… good go! They’ll be representing China alongside Ashura from Chengdu (who??) as well as Mercy & Sorrow (Da Bei 大悲) from Shanghai.. I poked around for extra information and it doesn’t seem like any other bands are headed to Japan this year which is a huge difference from 2011 when re-TROS, Muma, QSBS were invited among others. I have mixed feelings about how this selection/competition is held in terms of voting and attendance and I can’t blame some bands for not taking part or even pulling out. At the same time, Bands with enough support and means are able to get through so it is a mixed bag… I leave the ranting for another time. I gotta give credit though to Power Powder for doing things right: When I saw them at MIDI, they have fans wearing their t-shirts, banners and flags flying [...]
I’m not sure how the week went by but it’s already Thursday and I’m not sure i’ve recovered from the onslaught of Sex in the Xity over the past few days. Still, as the weekend nears, time to check out what’s gonna keep me busy and entertained. It’s deceivingly quiet but there are some interesting little gems happening here and there. Let’s dive into it! Thursday April 5th Nirvana Tribute @ Temple Devils at the Crossroad and Rolling Bolling are on hand to pay tribute to late Kurt Cobain. It’s already been 18 years since we lost this iconic figure who went on to represent a generation’s angst much against his own desires. I’m amazed at how far reaching his influence is in China with tons of books written about him and even more bands copying Nirvana. This should be a fun opportunity to bring out the converse, striped T-shirts, geek glasses and sing with some marbles in your mouth. Friday April 6th King Lychee @ Mao Live Hong Kong’s reigning kings of hardcore are finally in the capital in support of their latest record. These guys are as legit as it gets with shoutouts from none other than Biohazard when they played intercity festival last year. Return the Truth, who put on one hell of a show last time i saw them, and XitneverhappenedX will be in charge of the opening bill. I’m looking forward to this puppy folks and might come out really bruised from it. Brutal I [...]
