With Daze Feast preparations well underway, and BD’s new baby, Cuju, due to open next week, things are little busy here at Daze HQ, but you can be sure that’s not going to stop us catching some tunes! Here’s a few of the shows that have caught our attention this weekend: Friday June 1 HitWeek China 2012 @ Tango 3rd Floor Italian acts La Fame di Camillia and Negrita are joined by local friends Shanren for night two of cross-cultural fun at Tango. The party kicks off Thursday night with Subsonica, La Fame di Camillia along with Zhou Yunshan & Ruins. Goodbye Sister Qin! @ Old What For anyone who’s ever set foot in Old What you’ll know the lovely boss lady Sister Qin is the one who keeps this little gem running,. Well she’s decided it’s time to say goodbye (temporarily we hope!), so all the regular bands are getting together in what promises to be one epic night to bid her farewell! The Age of Innocence @ Yugong Yishan Happy Children’s Day! For those of us eternal children, DUDE, DH & Hellcats, Residence A & Candy Monster will be rocking the house at Yugong tonight. DUDE are currently finishing up their latest album, and about to head out on a massive China tour, so I for one am looking forward to hearing lot’s of new songs from them! Saturday June 2 Book Swap & Board Games 4th Year Anniversary Our baby is all grown up folks.. 4 years [...]
I’m fine haunting smoky livehouses, listening to loud dirty boogie rock n roll, getting down and dirty… but i also like me a beautiful day, sitting on the grass, soaking up the sun and picnicking the afternoon away while enjoying relaxed music and that is what makes the Ditan Folk Festivals one of my favorite events of the year. Even my non-muso friends come out to play for that one! This year, I’m hoping the weather will not get in our way.. Event Douban: http://www.douban.com/event/16197716/ So, the dates were unleashed today and looks like the good old Dong party is gonna stand toe to toe with the two big boys of music in Beijing for the may holiday! That is one hell of a ballsy move and it makes a lot of sense.. it might even hurt attendance on the other festivals ever so slightly: – Ditan is family friendly with a an open air chilled athmosphere – Ditan Park is more conveniently located than any of the other venues… those of us who tried getting to tongzhou many times before know about this. – Bring your own booze/food: with the big two having all kinds of scrutiny and extra security/mafan, this might turn out to be a winner – Good acts, foreign and Chinese alike Seriously folks, this is gonna be a tough call this year… with MIDI still not getting their shit together, I like the alternatives more and more. Day one looks like a winner with Shan [...]
Wah, I’m still recovering from last weekend, is it really time for Quickslants again? The year may be winding down, but there’s still no shortage of great gigs to check out this weekend. Here’s just a taste of what’s available. Thursday December 15th: Little Marbles @ Yugong Yishan Swedish indie-gypsy-pop meets American bluegrass, a strange, but hopefully good combination of Little Marbles and the Randy Abel Stable. That p-word makes me want to run and hide, but if you’re into that kinda thing, this is one to check out. WHAI @ Jianghu Post/prog-rock ningxia style in the hutongs with WHAI, made up of Long Shen Dao & Buyi’s Zhang Wei on guitar, keyboard & guzheng, Lidong & Nucleus’s drummer Liu Miao and Chen Zhong on bass. I’ve caught these guys out at the drive-in a couple of times now and I’m really enjoying their style. Friday December 16th: Shanren & Lidong @ Mao Livehouse Two of the best folk bands in the city team up for one big night at Mao, Lidong from the north-west and Shanren from the south. Shanren are currently recording an album with Daze Central friend Martin Rawlins, we’re looking forward to that coming out in the New Year. Hanggai @ 2 Kolegas There’ll be lambs cooking, voices roaring and dancing galore when Hanggai throw a party in their home base 2 Kolegas. No matter where you start tonight, this will be the place to end it, I can see this one going all night! Saturday [...]
Interesting weekend ahead as usual folks with a variety of sounds available to those seeking musical entertainment. Rockaid is going on pretty much all weekend. Shanren return to 2K and host of other goodies happening left and right. The Tiger beer battle of the band continues with sessions at Mako Livehouse and Mao Livehouse. Kamila returns at Jianghu and more…. Without further due, let’s get rolling folks! Here’s where i’m most likely to show up for good tunes. Thursday August 11 Xiao He & Jeffrey Lewis @ Yugong: No, I’m not going there but it does have the potential to be amazing if both of these guys do things right. Here’s always hoping Xiao He forgets his laptop at home but I don’t think it’s gonna happen. I heard some good stuff about Jeffrey Lewis so go for it. I’ll be at Capoeira instead! Old Folk @ jiangjinjiu: Two relatively unknowns Ma Di and Dong Ye play a free show in gulou. This might actually be a cool opportunity to discover something cool and new. The guys at Jiangjinjiu are pretty cool about spotting talent. Friday August 12: Shanren @ 2Kolegas: I’ve never seen the wild ones play 2 K so it should be cool. I’d like to see how their sound has changed since last time when they started sounding increasingly more metal. This one is undeniably gig of the evening, bar none! Undistinguished Youth , whom i never heard, start things off. Rock Aid 1 @ Tango: first [...]
Ok.. no more jokes about yet another music festival but like it or not, there’s another one coming! Hanggai, the venerable folk rockers from inner Mongolia decided to organize their own festival.. why not? can’t be as badly organized as Strawberry and when the band is in charge, you know that musicians will at least have some water to drink. Jokes aside, this one is looking promising folks (from Time Out): On a single stage, set up to look like a Mongolian tribal area, Hanggai will perform along with some of Chinese folk music’s top bands: Mamer & Iz, Shanren, Zhang Quan (formerly of Wild Children), Nancheng Erge, Dawanggang and Zhang Weiwei & Guo Long. It’s taking place around the Beijing suburbs in shunyi with at the ecological Anlilong Resort which by the sound of things looks like a great place to spend the night. more information over at Time Out, the English Media Sponsor : http://www.timeout.com/cn/en/beijing/aroundtown/feature/10323/hanggai-festival-sept-18.html Strangely enough, the event is listed on douban but not really updated at the moment: http://www.douban.com/group/Hanggaifestival/ This one is definitely worth getting excited about folks… a night of BBQ, folk music and some really fun bands… might even try out camping for this.
