Quickslants: Mo’s Last Stand, CMCB, Suffocated, Namo and More

The quickslants are coming in a bit late this week folks but trust me, it’s been freaking busy as hell on this side of ‘daze HQ. Plenty of goodies happening around town with some of them in places we’re not used to writing about much anymore! Friday August 19 Growl 4 @ Mao: CMCB, Suffocated, ZuoYou and The Face, 4 really old school bands are set to rock the shit out of Mao Live. Last time I saw suffocated, they unleashed a storm of metal of MIDI. One of the better sets of the year and I’m looking forward to more. The Face, since they added Diao Lei ( ChunQiu, Honeygun) have gotten even better. The real band I’m looking forward to though is CMCB: I have fond memories of seeing them in Chaoyang Park last year where they impressed the hell out of me with their brand of rapcore. I’m looking forward to more. Nanwu/Namo @ Jianghu: You better get there early for this one folks. These kids are the new darlings of the scene so everyone and their mama will be there to watch them play. I’m not sure Jianghu can handle the onslaught but it should be fun! The stage has got to be too small for them but I’m sure they’ll find a way. Unique brand of crosstalk rock and loads of laughs. Back To School @ Hot Cat: Not There, funk/intrumental/rock , is throwing a party at Hot Cat Club, free of charge and you’re [...]

MIDI 2011 day 1: Tales of Storms, Dust, Suffocated, SUBS and Rock

AH, Midi day 1. The first day of a festival is always the trickiest one! That’s the one that sets the tone for the rest of the festivities from atmosphere to logistics and it’s fair to say MIDI was off to a rocky start with mother nature doing all she could to get in the way. Still, somehow, the dust, rain and mud just combined to make it gritty and grungy. Getting to the grounds was relatively easy with mix of subway/shuttle. The organizers had it all set up and labelled with a bunch of folks holding signs pointing to the shuttle and prompt service. easy breezy! No queues or whatsoever getting in the grounds. One tent with 4 lines selling tickets and further down an entrance point with security check that was anything but prohibitive. Really relaxed. The location was beautiful but a bit worn down with plenty of grass but also plenty of dry sandy patches that worked hand in hand with the storm to make day1 one hell of a grungy affair. The flea Market side was as hopping as ever with tons of people setup selling various things from nurse outfits to hats and stickers. The audience was amazing!!! Full blown rock fans that braved the elements and were there for every song by almost every band!!! How about the music? Da Hong Bao 大红袍 opened the festivities with decent metal. Nothing to write home about but not bad either. Perdel gathered quite a crowd for [...]

News and Ramblings: Thank you for the Fish, 10 Years of 330 Metal , hedgehog and more

I love it when there is action in Beijing’s musicverse.. quite a few news to chew on! Mao Live is really stepping up their game with great shows lined up throughout March. I’ve been there over the past 2 weeks for a few of their events and it’s all been happy happy. Looks like they might even be paying more attention to the bar lately. From the looks of it, the tribute series is gonna keep going on a regular basis: After Bob Marley and The Rolling Stones, they’re lining up a Kurt Cobain tribute along with a Joyside tribute. good stuff!! Hedgehog has been putting some new songs on their douban lately. They’re gearing up for a China Tour that kicks off March 12 at Tianjin’s 13 Club and end in Beijing with a homecoming performance at Mao Live April 22. New Songs are slightly heavier and darker than the typical Hedgehog song.. I like that! Kang Mao and Wu Hao, 2/3 of the SUBS have a new side project with the funny name of Thank You For All The Fish 拜拜,多谢你们的鱼!… They’re gonna premiere it at Yugong Yishan next week, March 8 along with Bigger Bang + DH and The Hellcats. The sound is described as Nice and Evil.. I’m not sure what that means but I hope that it is something that can showcase Kang Mao’s singing ability! She’s so much better and can hit a wide range of notes if she wants to. As much as [...]

Exodus unleashes a Brutal all out Metal assault on Beijing for their first show in China!

My ear drums are still buzzing, and I’m slightly surprised at the lack of bruises and the fact that nothing is broken on my body after last night.. why? one might ask… Because I went down to the pits of hell (or Mao Live House) with 2 walls of death and more moshing than I ever gambled for as Exodus descended on Beijing to help Painkiller Magazine celebrate their 10 years with help from China’s own Suffocated and Japan’s Grim Force. Mao was packed when things got started with Suffocated who I had heard tons of great stuff about but hadn’t had a chance to catch yet… until yesterday that is! They’re pretty darn solid and had the audience jumping up and down, moshing, headbanging with pure unadulterated metal. as far as all the Chinese bands I’ve heard so far, I’m ready to give them the crown as the best one in Beijing if not China. I’m gonna have to catch them again and home to get my hands on their album sometime soon. Next up was Grim Force from Japan. These cats were musically fantastic but I kept looking at them and thinking sushi! Good classic technically sound metal but they just lacked a little stage presence i felt. big big ups to their insane bass player who did not slow down at any point during their set. Their drummer was just as nuts with badaboums and badabangs all around. They got a hang of the audience around the [...]
