here’s a toast to post titles that don’t mean jack shit.. because that’s really the case here. I couldn’t think of anything better that would encompass all the musical goodness that lies ahead over the next 5 days or so… yeah, this is a long edition of the quickslants due to a busy weekday set of great shows.. let’s kick it! Friday Oct. 26 Whai @ 2 Kolegas The ever evolving WHAI is turning 1… man the band has changed so much since i first spotted them. The sound is more complex, they have added a DJ and are now internationally travelled: they just came back from playing a festival in Korea. I still can’t quite define what they play other than experimental progressive folk fusion.. how is that for a mouthful? The lads have pushed hard on this gig and the weibo promotions are through the roof. I expect a lot of fun, drinking and playing around. Tuleger @ Jianghu Gangzi has changed his stage name to Tuleger, but his Inner Mongolian stylings are still the same. Tonight, he’s letting loose a new release: “I Am Mongol”… i haven’t had a chance to listen to the new record yet but I have no reason to think it won’t be good. He’s slowly but steadily following in the footsteps of Hanggai and Ajinai while retaining his own style. Saturday Oct. 27 hardest night for me to pick a gig.. really! so much good stuff out there: Rolling Stones Tribute @ [...]
a lot of things been happening in Beijing lately but I haven’t actually gotten around to bringing them up on ‘daze… let’s do a bit of roundup. First up, the competition for China representative at the 2012 Summersonic festival in Japan.. after what seemed like a heated competition, a band a warned you about a long time ago, The Power Powder, won the right to fly over and represent Beijing. Congrats to the kids for all the hard work they put in and for taking the competition seriously. When i first saw them at Kolegas last year, I felt they were special and they proved me right… good go! They’ll be representing China alongside Ashura from Chengdu (who??) as well as Mercy & Sorrow (Da Bei 大悲) from Shanghai.. I poked around for extra information and it doesn’t seem like any other bands are headed to Japan this year which is a huge difference from 2011 when re-TROS, Muma, QSBS were invited among others. I have mixed feelings about how this selection/competition is held in terms of voting and attendance and I can’t blame some bands for not taking part or even pulling out. At the same time, Bands with enough support and means are able to get through so it is a mixed bag… I leave the ranting for another time. I gotta give credit though to Power Powder for doing things right: When I saw them at MIDI, they have fans wearing their t-shirts, banners and flags flying [...]
There ain’t many blues rock bands in Beijing, at least not ones that play 70s style rock blues with a hint of early aerosmith, stones, muddy waters and the like.. and if they’re around, I haven’t seen them much! That is until last friday at 2 Kolegas when this little band I never heard off had the rough job of playing a set between those of Bad Mamasan and Skarving… In retrospect, it might have been a genius idea to have a blues rock band handle the transition between bad ass metal and funky Ska and that’s what this little band did: The Power Powder Now, this is sure gonna show my bias as a month ago, I ripped Emitter for winning the Beijing leg of Tiger Battle of the bands while being nothing more than a glorified copycat of AC/DC… and here I am praising a band that is pretty much sounding like the bastard Asian kid of the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith. Sue me… See, The Power Powder didn’t bastardize a bunch of songs and call them their own. They actually did a really cool job putting on a show for the dozen folks out there and displayed excellent musicianship in my book. A little quick trip to their douban shows different band members so I’m not really sure what’s up with that but the lineup that showed up friday night at 2 Kolegas had me sold. The young guitar player was having fun and showing feelings which [...]
