A couple of weeks ago, while every venue in Beijing decided to close up for spring break, the folks at 2 Kolegas decided to turn on the lights for one evening to welcome Kunming’s Quebec Redneck Bluegrass Project. This had been booked for a while with Beijing’s Redbucks originally on the bill. However, due to the untimely departure of uncle Luke, the French-Canadians were left standing on their own. Considering it was a cold Tuesday, Chinese New Year’s eve, I’d say the turnout was definitely not too bad with a good 60 persons in the audience…. and let me tell you folks, they all left happy, sweaty and bluegrassed. The band came on around 10 and got things going with their standard “sweet mama yeah” which is a nice introduction to the band’s style. They then proceeded to rip through their whole catalog in stomping, yeehawing, hand-clapping hour… and the crowd was eating it up. Heck, at some point, we had a moshpit going near the stage…. to Bluegrass…. How to describe these kids? They’re actually mostly members of punk bands that get together and play good old fashioned bluegrass.. cool thing about their brand of bluegrass is that it’s trilingual which I’m pretty sure makes it as unique as it gets. They got the English vernacular down, the Patois is like French’s answer to Southern slang and kunming hua the same. Mixing all 3 in the same song can result in funny effects. Not only did the band not [...]
So, you lose your guitar player and one of your lead vocalists/songwriters who happens to be one of the most charismatic persons/entertainers in Beijing and maybe more.. what do you do? If you’re the Redbucks, you shuffle a few things around, drop the mandolin and keep the stompin’ good times going. While Ruby was having fun with the Dancers and the Buzzcocks, yours truly settled on catching some old fashioned hollering courtesy of my favorite ( and only) bluegrass outfit in town. There had been numerous speculations as to whether or not Beijing Daze would ever make it to another Redbucks show after the departure of the lovely and talented Daisy Sweetgrass… and just to prove them wrong, I did! because here at ‘daze headquarters, it’s all about the music man ( using my best Jeff Bridges impersonation) The show is different for sure: the multitude of instruments they used to have on hand brought a certain dimension to a Redbucks show, sometimes a bit too much! now, it’s back down to bare bones basics with fiddle, guitar, banjo and bass or something like that. Some shades of the old bucks are back when Luke handles the singing but the harmonies had to change following the untimely departures and let me tell you folks, that is not necessarily a bad thing. Having lost Daisy, the band no longer has that single focus point that distracted an audience from their other songs.. no matter what they all say, that was the [...]
cool little weekend ahead folks with just enough musical diversity and offering to keep the dazemeister happy and not over-booked. An interesting thing is a few bands playing their “first official” appearance with new lineups when they’ve been seen around town for a little while now.. think Wu & The Side Effects along with Hang On The Box. Oh yeah, in case u ain’t heard, The Buzzcocks are in town. Thursday October 21st: Paperdoll @ Yugong Yishan: I admit it, I know nothing about them and have barely heard a song or two but I’ve liked the descriptions and I’m more than curious to go check them out for shit n giggles. it’s supposed to have rock, attitude and fun. The Beijinger 9th years @ Migas: if you want a reason to get to sanlitun, there are very few better ones. The Beijinger is for the hard nosed expats by hard nosed expats and they’ve been around for a while fighting the good fight. They celebrate 9 years in style with an-you-can-drink for 99RMB at Migas which YOU KNOW will be nuts. Friday October 22nd: Buzzcocks @ Yugong Yishan: I’m writing this one knowing fully that i will not be going to this particular gig.. I hear they still put on a mean performance but I’d rather not see middle-aged 60 year olds singing songs they wrote when they were in their late teens.. it ain’t the same! The Redbucks @jiangjinjiu: I ain’t seen them bucks since the one and [...]
I guess all good things must come to an end, or so goes the proverbial saying! In this case, here’s hoping ( and is sure) that The Redbucks are gonna be around for a bit… Miss Daisy’s journey with them is coming to an end though as I wrote last week. I managed to make it to their Jiangjin Jiu Ba last Friday night where they played one hell of an acoustic set to a jam packed full house! It was packed y’all…. The band was was short a few members but Chris, Luke, Amy and Daisy did more than just hold their own: They delivered a kickass performance to a loving audience that was actually listening to the music which is one hell of a departure from the last time i caught the ‘Bucks during their album launch. The first set was mostly oldies and goodies with a few songs from their CD, all that glitters, thrown in for good measure with Daisy and Luke doing most of the vocals. The crowd was definitely into it, whistling, hollering, clapping hands and what not. It was actually a nice departure from all the plugged shows I’ve been seeing as of late with all 4 band members sharing one little microphone amongst themselves. The Second set started with one of those moments that spells out RESPECT… after their 10mn break, they came back on but the 50+ strong crowd didn’t notice and despite their attempts are quieting them, they kept talking. [...]
A bit of a delayed quickslants this week along with sporadic posting but yours truly was supposed to head out of town and things got complicated. Expect a couple of posts on last weeekend’s Redbucks show soon as well as a trip to the shaanxi provincial restaurant. In the meantime, here is some of what’s happening and good this end of the week: Wednesday September 8: Xiao He & The Belgians at Jianghu: Ok.. not sure about this but it seems like the only option available in town today. Xiao He might or might not turn out as was the case a few days ago at 2 Kolegas. The Belgians will be there and I’m just curious as to what kind of music it’s gonna end up being. could be fun! If it’s not, there’s always the option to run off to Salud. Thursday September 9: it just seems curiously devoid of listings or anything good for this thursday.. there’s bound to be a houseband somewhere doing something if you really care. Capoeira from 7:30 to 9:30 at gongti is always a great option to get this rolling. Friday September 10: Now, this get a bit complicated here with quite a few good things happening around the same time. GBoB at 2 Kolegas: Global battle of the bands heat 1 is set for 2 kolegas. Come out and catch a few Beijing bands duking it out and trying to replicate Rustic’s success on the international scene. There might be a [...]
It’s a sad day in ‘daze headquarters… wow.. I still remember roughly about two years ago or so, hanging out at TUN on a tuesday night for open mic night with Beijing Rob and Johnny Boy, taking in the music coming from the stage but mostly having some sort of conversation when this angelic voice came out of the speakers, putting any and all conversations to a halt! We looked up and say this new girl on stage, wearing green kakhi pants and dark top singing like it was he mission and purpose in life! I remember distinctly M turning to me and saying: ” wow.. look at that girl singing and smiling with her eyes” and that was the first time i was exposed to one Daisy Sweetgrass! She kept coming back for a few weeks and so did we, to watch her and what would become The Redbucks after a little while. I remember joining them on stage at some point along with Rob and Johnny for a cover of the Grateful Dead’s Friend of the Devil just to get a closer look! fast forward a few months/years, Daisy Sweetgrass is part of Beijing’s music personalities on her own merit as well as that of The Redbucks. She’s one of the sweetest, most charming and talented musicians in town that can melt anyone’s heart with her soothing sounds! I’m a huge fanboy and completely unashamed of it! And now she’s leaving! I got an email from the ‘bucks [...]
a bit of an early quickslants edition this week folks.. it’s mostly got to do with a good gig at 2 Kolegas on Tuesday night that might prove to be quite the rock show this week so let’s get down to business for what is one of the busiest quickslants in a while. The week I do an early edition of the quickslants, hell breaks loose THe redbucks cancelled their show on Friday, Helen Feng reportedly not part of the Pet Conspiracy show at Yugong Yishan and finally, the big one I overlooked: The Old What Bar is turning 8 and celebrating with a week worth of musical events. Enjoy the gigs… I’m gonna go sob silently and mourn the missed drooling opportunity. Tuesday August 3: Fox Feather @ 2Kolegas: I had a feeling about these kids for some reason and sure enough, a quick surf over to their myspace page confirmed my suspicions: These kids be good y’all! A Norwegian quatuor with the right influences and a singer that’s got some good pipes. I don’t get excited much about unknown foreign bands coming to Beijing much but I’m looking forward to this gig. No idea who’s opening for them. One Lick Less @D-22: Ruby caught this guy in Shanghai a little while ago and she was quite impressed. Heck, she’s impressed enough to trek over to wudaokou and D-22 for another taste. This one is definitely listed based on her strong recommendation! I’d go watch him just to see [...]
The World Cup still holds it’s grip over Beijing nightlife this weekend with vuvuzela being the instrument de jour. It’s relatively quiet on the music front, but Saturday has some gigs not to be missed. Thursday June 24 Zhang Si’an @ Jianghu One of the city’s busiest musicians Jean-Sébastien gave us some free music a couple of weeks back. Come see his guitar, zhongran and drum based folk fill the intimate backroom at Jianghu. (He’ll also be wearing his rock hat on Friday performing with The Amazing Insurance Salesmen @ What Bar) Friday June 25 The Fever Machine @ D22 Ready for some stoner rock? These Shanghai boys make their way to the ‘Jing for the first time, to hang out in the Wu with locals B-side Lovers, The Molds and Guaili. Saturday June 26 Xiao He @ Jianghu Always a source of debate between BD and myself! Experimental folk, electro mixes from this musical genius. Warning: the laptop will be present! DH & The Hellcats @ 2 Kolegas Local favorites darling DH and her band have the best costumes, what will they be wearing this time? Toe tapping swing to make you dance the night away. Zippo Hot List @ Yugong Yishan The second in this series of gigs brings us Wuhan boys AV Akubo (one of the standouts from the disaster that was Strawberry Day 1!), World Battle of the Band winners Rustic, 24 hours and Mr Graceless. (BD note: This should be one hell of a show) [...]
Saturday was a pretty good day for music in Beijing with both The Redbucks and Miserable Faith having album releases on the same evening. I ended up at Yugong Yishan for my prescribed dose of Americana Made From China and loved most of it with The Redbucks on top of their game (and despite a sound system that didn’t/couldn’t keep up) In true Beijing fashion, the show started late (do i even need to write this anymore?). The band kicked things off with the lead single and album namesake “All that glitters” and proceeded to rip through a mix of originals and bluegrass classics for a nice long and slightly low key first set! After a little break, they came back on for an up-tempo second part with “wild Turkey Gobble” amongst others! unfortunately, I had to run off before the end of the second set to save a dog from thirst and starvation and consequently missed the encore where the band went electric with country classics but I heard it was pretty darn good. Uncle Luke rocked the house during “low Tide“, “snub nose” came out amazing live and Daisy Sweetgrass, with a voice sweeter than a honeydew, brought them (us) down to our knees with “Jolene” and “You’ll never get another love song“. Amy Spice was not about to be outdone as there was rousing applause for her fiddling and many a request to turn it up throughout the show. A Major surprise was Two-sheds Jackson coming and [...]
It ain’t no secret folks, I love me an honest to goodness good time getting down and dirty with some roots music and bourbon.. I do have a hillbilly bone in there, maybe more than one.. and The Redbucks appeal to it. I’ve been following those guys since the first time i spotted them at Tun’s Open Mike night a few years back and I’m stoked to no end that they’re finally releasing their debut album and that they’ve won “local Band of the year” at the City Weekend awards. Having already subjected the lovely Daisy Sweetgrass and “2 sheds” Jackson to interviews, I tracked down the artist formerly known as Hobo Luke for a few questions! Here’s what came out of it: 1- Who is Uncle Luke and what’s going on in your world? This is your chance to plug your stuff: I play banjo, dobro, and sing bluegrass and old-time music with the Redbucks. We’ve got our album release party this Saturday, June 5th, at Yugong Yishan. It’s going to be a badass party and everyone gets a free copy of our album with their admission ticket, so COME! We’re also doing a China tour during the first week of July and we’ll be starting it off with a BBQ at 2 Kolegas, and then we’ll be hitting some really cool venues in Qingdao, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and possibly Chengdu and Chongqing as well. So check us out then too. 2- The Redbucks just won “Local [...]
