cool news and happening: Chinese Metal at Wacken, Lidong on the charts and Black Snakes Subs

there’s been quite a bit of things happening around the Chinese music scene as of late and some of them are particularly exciting for yours truly, especially in terms of developing the scene overseas: Suffocated, Yaksa and The Falling will be featured in this year’s Wacken open air metal festival. How about that folks? 3 Chinese bands playing the biggest Metal festival in the world.. I’m stoked! This is a huge feat with many parties involved to make it happen including MIDI, Painkiller Magazine’s Yu Yang and the Chinese Ministry of Culture. I hope this works out for all parties concerned. A few years back, Voodoo Kungfu made it to Wacken but there never seemed to be any follow up. Here’s hoping this is different and the bands make the most of their opportunity. For those going to Wacken ( lucky bastards), the show times are scheduled as follows ( h/t Rock in China) The Falling on W:E:T Stage 02-08-2012 at 16:40 Yaksa on Headbangers Stage 03-08-2012 at 11:30 Suffocated on Party Stage 04-08-2012 at 11:00 Congrats to the bands going and good luck! I think Suffocated will do just fine. Yaksa really needs to have a good day to impress but The Falling will get swallowed live. A band like SAW, Tomahawk or Ordnance would have done a much better job in terms of appealing to a Metal audience that knows their shit. On a lighter fokier note, looks like the lidong masterplan is picking up: Their song Xiao [...]

Quickslants: Hellcats, Mantas, Metal Battles, Sound of the Xity and more

This end of March/beginning of April period is kicking ass, taking names… And there’s no escaping it baby! These quickslants basically carry over into next week thanks to the ballsy folks from Sex in the Xity who have pretty much taken over Beijing from April 1-3 with shows all over the freaking city spawning all genres! C There’s a lot to get to so let’s get started without any further delays: Thursday March 29 Dong Chorus @ Jianghu I went out of my way to catch these guys last Thursday. They didn’t disappoint! beautiful harmonies, really interesting outfits and just all around special. I’d see them again. Be warned though that even though they might announce Wu Hongfei on the bill, she doesn’t play. I actually got quite ticked off about that at 2K but what the post. Still, worth checking. Friday March 30 Hellcats/Mantas/Beatles @ 2Kolegas Put on you dancing shoes an come on over baby… The hellcats will be swinging it, The Flying Mantas with surf things up and might show you a couple of surprises. The Beijing Beatles can take care of the fab side… This is an early candidate for gig of the freaking year and I expect to see 2 Kolegas hopping til the wee hours of the morning. Christmas, purveyors of idiotic rock, also on the bill. gonna be an interesting one. Saturday March 31 Mademoiselle @ Modernista Yes, spring is back and so are the lovely tunes of one Marie Claude Lebel. The [...]

    Wacken 2012 Competition Finalist Announced

The weekend of March 17 saw 3 days of heavy competition over at Club 13 with dozens of Metal bands competing for the privilege to represent China at this year’s Wacken festival in Germany (see JTDJ’s Post). I believe Yaksa is already pretty much confirmed along with one or two other bands but that will be a post for another day. Let’s look at the finalist that will compete on April 1st: Long Way 远途(Heavy Metal) The Falling 堕天(Deathcore) http://site.douban.com/duotian/ Evilthorn 恶刺(Black-Death Metal) http://weibo.com/evilthorn Never Before(Stoner Metal) http://site.douban.com/neverbeforeband/ Ready To Die(Old School Death Metal) http://site.douban.com/ReadyToDie/ Some interesting names on there! I didn’t expect to see Never Before as they’re young to the scene but they were quite polished when i saw them opening for Bad Mamasan at Temple. It’s an interesting and diverse lineup competing for that spot and I hope the bands can actually capitalize on this chance. Joining the bands on stage that night will be Taipei’s Revilement(Brutal Death Metal)who are visiting the capital as part of their Let the Pillars Fall Asia Tour. W:O:A Metal Battle 2012: a conversation

W:O:A Metal Battle is tying up at 13 Club tonight, where 19 bands have been vying for a chance to represent China at Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany this August. To get a better understanding of what’s happening, Rock-in-China curator Max-Leonhard Von Schaper and Liu Ke of Raging Mob (2010 Metal Battle Winners, participating this year) talk about the state of the metal scene and the contest. They gave insightful answers, so I asked if they minded sharing on BeijingDaze and they both were down. For those serious metalheads out there much of this might seem elementary, but for folks who only have a cursory understanding like me it served as a nice crib sheet, and provided a greater appreciation for Beijing’s metal scene. Max-Leonhard Von Schaper How many metal bands do you think are active right now? It seems there are over 250 chronicled in RockinChina at one time or another… It is very difficult to say how many metal bands there are in China, but I would guess that the actual number is rather close to a thousand bands than only 250. Most bands are concentrated in the Beijing area but there are a huge number of artists and bands in other tier-1 and tier-2 cities and a certainly unknown number of bands in tier-3 and tier-4 cities. With the advent of Douban it is amazing to see how many new and unknown bands suddenly are accessible. For example the bands around the record label Tasty Trance [...]

Die From Sorrow wins Wacken Slot to represent China

This one kinda went under the radar but over the past few weeks, a competition was held in Beijing amongst Metal bands to see which one would win the right to represent China at Wacken, arguably the biggest metal festival in the world. The battle, sponsored by the good folks at PainKiller Mag took place at Mao Live and 13 Club. Die From Sorrow (郁乐队) emerged from the shredding, moshing and headbanging affair as the ultimate winner with their brand of so-called “melodic death Metal”… I’ve never had the pleasure of watching the band live but I look forward to catching them sometime soon and wish them the best of luck in Germany. Now that I remember, I gotta add a new to-do to my list: Attend Wacken Festival. More about Die From Sorrow on Douban: http://site.douban.com/diefromsorrow/
