Beijing Live Quickslants: Max Star for Max Music, Punk made from China and housewives that rock
The rock gods have smiled on you Beijing and delivered a meaty week of treats like we haven’t had in a long long time! We got quantity and quality with almost compatible time slots to boot.
of course, there are plenty of options all week all around town starting with Star Max festival in Ditan Park… I’m skipping straight to the meaty side of things here:
Thursday 19th:
Free Capoeira Classes @ Gongti:
7:30 to 9:30 pm! All class fees are waived for a short time to celebrate moving into a new studio space inside Workers Stadium. Enter through Gate 21 or 3 ( north side), go up to the 3rd floor and walk towards the middle. It’s a large studio space entirely dedicated to Martial arts! If you have any trouble, call up Van (13810022050) or Jun (18600056983)
Zhang Si’an @ Jianghu:
Check out the folksy side of JSB as he goes back to the hutongs. Last time I saw the Frenchman play was part of his Amazing Insurance Salesmen group and they brought the house down just about a month ago. This one should be mellower.
Friday 20th:
Shonen Knife @ Mao Live:
Japanese all Girl punk band celebrating almost 3 decades together. I’m intrigued enough about these ladies to have gotten advance tickets for this baby. They’ve experienced a few lineup changes through the years but the latest incarnation is getting rave reviews. Hegdehog will be opening!
Day 7 @ Ditan Music Fest:
One of the strongest lineups of this week long festival but heavily on the electro punk side of things with Bigger Bang, Pet Conspiracy and SUBS amongst others. I’d love to check it out but there’s no way I’m crossing town on time for this.
Saturday 21st:
Punk Fest at Mao Live:
Is Mao Livehouse back or is it back? I was there last year for the punk festival and it seems like this year sees much of the same bands coming back which is great: The Unsafe ( who fucking rock), The Dancers, Sochu Legion (oi Punk), Hell City and MiSanDao amongst others. It starts EARLY afternoon folks so a perfect afternoon fare before heading to Ditan park for:
Day 6 of Ditan Music Fest:
XTX baby… I haven’t seen Xie Tian Xiao play live in a long time and I am soooo looking forward to the “king of Live” unleashing his infectious riffs and melodies inside the temple. Twisted Machine, Brain Failure, Steely Heart are amongst the acts there…. local favorites, Carsick Cars, are also on the bill but I’m only saying this for informational purposes… I’ll be outside eating during their set. and when XTX finishes, it’s gonna be a long ride to the other side of town for
The Amazing Insurance Salesmen at 2 Kolegas:
hell yeah, back to the drive-through with JSB and his other crew. As I mentioned above, they were on fire last time and I don’t expect it to be much different while celebrating the fact that 2 Kolegas is getting back into music after a 2 weeks hiatus for home visits.
This is probably the extent of my musical adventures for the week… but if any energy is left, you might see me at the “Don’t Call us Laowai” series at Mao on sunday night.
Well, I guess we know where Ruby’s gonna be all weekend then … but you forgot Don’t Call Me Laowai! on Sunday @ Mao too. Mystery line-up, but last time it was all good!
