Well, BD is escaping the snow and heading off to sit on the beach in sunny Australia, so you’ve got Ruby on quickslants this week, Which means I get to plug the shows I’ll be heading too! And there’s some good ones in the mix too, looks like I’ve swapped BD for a couple of Aussie bands, there’s also an awards show, 2 album launches and a Christmas pub crawl. Who says things slow down over the winter?
Wednesday December 7th:
Splitworks 5th Anniversary Party @ Temple
The lovely peeps over at Splitworks have brought us many great shows including last year’s JUE Festival and this year’s Black Rabbit, so come out and help them celebrate their 5th birthday. They’ve even brought us a present – chillwave legend Chad Valley with support from Streets Kill Strange Animals.
Parkway Drive @ Mao Livehouse
Aussie hardcore hits the ‘Jing! Tickets ain’t cheap for this one, but as someone who’s seen these guys before at a festival, they’re totally worth it. And it’s conveniently close to Temple, so you can join the party afterwards ….
Thursday December 8th:
Steely Heart Album release @ Yugong Yishan
These indie rockers have been getting better and better each time I’ve seen them. They’ve been working hard on their debut album, and are launching it with support for Brain Failure and the always awesome Ghost Spardac.
Flounder & Illness Sickness @ Gulou 121
Another Aussie band touring the Middle Kingdom, Flounder have worked there way up north from Shanghai and will be rocking Gulou with the help of one of my favourite new bands, Illness Sickness. If you haven’t seen IS yet, I’d recommend coming out tonight, or you can catch them at Old What on Friday, or Mao on Saturday.
Friday December 9th:
Devil’s at the Crossroad Album release @ Temple
Yep, another hardworking Beijing band releasing an album this week, Devil’s at the Crossroads are one of this year’s newcomers on the scene and this show should be a fun one with all girl punk band Unionbunny in support.
Saturday December 10th:
Santacon – all over Beijing!
Yep, Santa’s back in town and he needs your help in spreading the festive spirit this weekend. Now, Daze Central will be putting in a call to the North Pole over the next few days, so watch this space for more details including where you can join the route during the day … and also an announcement on the bands Santa’s planned to entertain you along the way!
Midi Awards @ Tango
The Midi School brings you their 3rd annual awards show, with performances from Long Shen Dao, Liquid Oxygen Can, CMCB, Hao Yun and more. Check out the nominees here and start making you bets for who’ll be named the best bands/musicians on 2011!
Sunday December 11th:
Wu-Force @ Yugong Yishan
OMG, I don’t know how I nearly missed this one! Abigail Washburn is back in Beijing, joined again by WuFei, in a beautiful combination of West meets East, Banjo meets Guzheng. If you were lucky enough to catch them at Capital M almost exactly 1 year ago, you’ll know what I mean. If you weren’t, then this is a must see show!
