you might remember that last year, a mini-festival popped up in Beijing from seemingly nowhere: Ephemeral Festival. Over two week they organized some pretty awesome events with the likes of Matthieu Ha, Wu Fei, Stranded Horse and more. The series was an absolute breath of fresh air in a musical scene that can sometimes get stale and repetitive. They’re back!
Yoan, the brain behind Wangba, has a new series of shows called Brand New You’re Retro and it kicks off this friday night at Temple and will go on every friday of April. The series is all about exploring traditional and folk world music!

I’m not a huge fan of experimental music usually but there are some redeeming qualities to this series. I’d be curious to see how Xiao He would use the cavernous sound effect of Temple to his advantage because he is one of those that could figure out the mini-echoes.
Vialka’s reputation precedes them but I can’t say i know what to expect. This dup plays pretty much everything they fancy making them a Gypsy-cum-punk-folk-world-whatever band.
My personal and absolute no-miss show though is of course Abaji on the 20th. The man is a pure genius, an absolute joy to talk to and quite frankly amazing at what he does with all his instruments. We’re talking ACE.
Check them out folks.. the shows extremely cheap for what you get: 50rmb/door or 30rmb/advance.. can’t even get a glass of wine for that price these days.
