Hanggai Festival 2013 Set for This Weekend.. Win Some Tickets

Note: Scroll to the Bottom for the Contest and how to win two 3 day passes worth 600rmb to the festival

So, 2 days from now… actually tomorrow at the time of this writing, Beijing will see the kickoff of the most under-rated music festival in expat land: Hanggai Festival 2013 edition!
Not content to slowly spread their infectious brand of Mongolian rock-meets-throat-singing to a worldwide audience, Hanggai and frontman Ilchi want to bring world music to China… and not second grade has-beens. They have gunned out, much like last year, and brought in la creme-de-la-creme:

A beautiful mix of the who’s who of world music that will leave you wanting. Last year, Yemen Blues blew the roof of Mako, making sure that every single member of the audience got more than they paid for. Heck, hardened music veterans that were standing besides me, all picky mother—ers, we impressed.
Huun Huur Tu, Tuva’s elderstemen of throat singing, are probably playing one of their last gigs overseas as age is catching up with them and the travel from TUva to anywhere is extremely straining. Last year, they sold out Yugong Yishan and for a good reason.

A survey of the expat magazines all around Beijing is extremely disappointing really: other than timeout who devoted some coverage, it’s like the festival doesn’t even exist. Now, this could be the organisers not reaching out much but still, when the purpose is to inform readers of what’s happening and worth watching in town, how come something this big goes completely off the radar wheras DJ shmuck von walla’s set at bar-in-a-crappy-location goes through every wire?

That’s actually a throwback to the reasons why i started this blog and it’s sad to see that almost 4 years later, nothing has changed…

Anyways, we’re set starting Friday at Mako live house.

I think I’d have to go with the Talking Heads and Second Hand Rose rocking out together – either band on stage alone is already a party – a big happy family – and there is such gleeful relish in the way they attack each tune, and inject humor and pathos in their lyrics, there’s no way it wouldn’t work with them both on stage – just imagine “Take Me To The River” with both bands. Plus I just want to see David Byrne and Liang Long switch outfits.

Re: expat magazines. All publications were contacted by a native english speaker and a chinese speaker connected to the Festival organisation. They were issued with clear event details. Response…nada, nothing, dismal. Life in the big city…..indeed!

  3. Pedro says:

I’d like to see Paul Simon and Xiao He on stage. An unlikely cooperation in an attempt to do in China what Paul did with South African musicians in Graceland and Latin American artists in The Rhythm of the Saints.

  4. Sarahplusone says:

Faye Wong versus Beyoncé, the ultimate cross cultural diva off.

  5. Beijing Daze says:

cool stuff so far.. Willis, I really dig that choice.

  6. ruby says:

oooh, i know my vote doesn’t count, but since the hanggai fest is all about world music …how about gurrumul yunupingu alongside ajinai’s xiao hu on the small jianghu stage? that voice combined with matouqin would be amazing.

  7. Peter says:

I’d like to see Cui Jian and the Talking Heads share the same stage as they were one of the primary influences of his music

  8. Katy says:

Waaves and Bedstars – one loves the ganja, the other loves the bottle — so they’ll hate each other. But the onscreen antics will be so sweet.

  9. Jonas says:

Residence A and Kings of Leon — lots of ohhhhhhhhhs. Easy choruses, good songs.

Pedro, your comment is the lucky winner!! Please check your email.
