Quickslants: Zhangbei, SUBS, Yunnan Rock, Daikaju, Steve Vai and more

late slants again folks, sorry but work was rough this week. I’m gonna keep these short and sweet.

On the festival front, we have 2013 Zhangbei festival starting today. I wrote about this a while back and i wish i had more details to give you. emails and weibo messages to the organisers were left unanswered so yours truly has absolutely no extra info about transportation and accommodation. I believe you can camp and that there will be food. I also understand that there are buses going from beijing north bus station to Zhangbei. It’s a great lineup but i’m left frustrated at the lack of info… really.

Friday July 26

Steve Vai @ Thinkpad Space
it’s not late to get over to the 2000 seater on the side of the mastercard arena and watch as one of the shredding legends rips into guitar solo after guitar solo. There are plenty of rumours about mystery guests and i do expect plenty of Chinese rock n roll royalty to be on hand.

Old School @ School
Jacky Danny, Los Crasher, Era Rebels, Free Sex Shop, The Diders, Little Racer, and Obladi Obladi are on on this long as bill for a tiny little place. the new generation of alcohol fueled rockers is working harder than most at both the music and the party scene. If you want an unpretentious break for the night, this is your stop.

Saturday July 27

Daikaju @ Temple
weird psychedelic surf rock.. they remind me of a talented version of the insane clown posse! A band with a huge gimmick albeit they have the talent to back it up.

Yunnan Party @ 2 Kolegas
Shan Ren, yunnan food, grass, 2 Kolegas… do you really need more reasons?
a beautiful afternoon/evening in town with a bunch of chilled people, minority clothing and food as well as some good tunes.. so, how about we get ourselves a little dose of tractor rock?

subs
SUBS @ Mako
well, apparently, it’s the first time in 2 years that SUBS organise their own show. That is just amazing… they’ve been playing everywhere but this one time, it’s on their own terms. they pick the time, the songs, the sets and all the rest. post-rock darling, Glow Curve, will be there to lend a hand. DOn’t ask.. i have no answer. I suspect this is a secret scheme to make sure Ruby goes over there.

Sunday July 28:

Liu Yusi @ 69 Cafe
the human jukebox makes a little appearance for a chill sunday over by nanluoguxiang.
