Quickslants: Reflector, One Drop, Funky, Cohen Night and more
great weather in Beijing these days, means we’re getting more good tunes.
Last week’s onslaught turned out fantastic with amazing gigs by Second Hand Rose and a beautiful affaire over at Yugong for the Indie Store Anniversary. What’s this one got in store for us?
Friday March 21st:
Ask Your Sister @ Jianghu
Kamilla Nasr and her sisters plus a family member get together for some earthly tunes at Jianghu. I haven’t actually heard the band play but having seen kamilla perform for the better part of the past 4 years, I know she gets involved in pretty interesting projects and this one should be good. Especially as Jianghu just got a facelift.
Steely Heart/Penicillin/LxTxNxSx/End of the World @ School
New Wave rock/punk in a down and dirty gritty environment filled with Jagermeister. To some, this is a dream come true. For others, it might sound like their worst nightmare. Either ways, it’s one of this guys that might resemble a car crash: you just can’t pull away from it.
One Drop @ Yugong
They’re funky and they drop reggae like no one else in Beijing. It’s always a joy to go to their gigs and just get lost in the rhythms. Last time i saw them at 2 Kolegas is still talked about in Brazil and California.
Cohen Night @ 69
a rare mention of 69 bar/cafe on nanluoguxiang. They got Lao Liu (Sand) and Biao Yuan (former Joyside) coming together for a tribute to Leonard Cohen, arguably one of the greatest singers and composers around.
Saturday March 22nd
Reflector Album Release @ Tango
seriously, they’re the Chinese version of green day: They get older and have more fun as time goes by with some power pop punk. It’s a band that doesn’t take themselves too seriously, especially when they launch into their version of “you are my sunshine”
Funky & Friends at 2 Kolegas
Funky, the honorary ningxia citizen, is back in Beijing with yet some more Japanese rock bands. The undisputed Asia King of Drums manages to pull surprise after surprise every time he is in town and there is not reason this gig at 2 Kolegas should be different.
Sunday March 23rd
Colour Hunter (Changsha) / Streets Kill Strange Animals @ XP
A rare Beijing appearance by a Changsha outfit that i’ve heard very good things about.
