Show of Peace Concert in Beijing: Best kept secret ever or musical vaporware?

We know how to take a joke in Beijing! heck, we joke all the time about having the Beastie Boys, Bjork and Bob Dylan play a show together and we smile.
Then, the news falls out of the sky that Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, among other artists including Prince, Green Day, Beyonce, Coldplay, Black Eyed Peas, Kenney Chesney, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake and many others, will take part in the first annual Show Of Peace Concert, a globally televised event that will take place on April 17 at the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing, China.

sorry, it’s a bit early for April Fool’s day!

So what do we know?

Jimmy Page is apparently confirmed for the show according to Polstar

– The organizers have a huge press conference planned for the 13th of January as announced here (pdf link )

– The supposed list of performers includes the who’s who of pop/rock in East and West!

I’m really not sold on this, sorry! I’ll be first in line to buy a ticket if this comes through but I smell the musical equivalent of vaporware.

how about you guys? whatcha think?

I don’t believe it either. It just does’t seem possible.

Ah–notice “target and artists to be invited” list doesn’t show any confirmations. It’s just a bunch of big names. Only Jimmy Page is “confirmed.”

We made a few calls and wrote something for Friday’s Beijing818 column in the Global Times on this topic. Basically, I think this promoter has his ducks in a row on the Chinese organizational side.

If Jimmy Page and government officials really show up at the Ritz Carlton on Wednesday, I think it might happen.

time will tell… i won’t be surprised if it’s harmonized and I’ll be doing cartwheels if it turns out to be true

  5. Wouldn’t surprise me either. It’s definitely a bit of wish list but I think if one or two big other big names can be confirmed, the rest will follow. Hopefully, “performed at Bird’s Nest” is something they’re trying to cross off their list, since it’s pretty hard to do by yourself.

Thanks Daze (Mr. Daze?)! Interesting blog you’ve got here, hadn’t taken a gander at it before. Drop me an email at atacoguy at gmail dot com sometime, let’s grab a bite or a beer or something.

    Hello there, Happy Fool’s Day!!!

An aged farmer and his wife were leaning against the edge of their pig-pen when the old woman wistfully recalled that the next week would mark their golden wedding anniversary.
“Let’s have a party, Homer,” she suggested. “Let’s kill a pig.”
The farmer scratched his grizzled head. “Gee, Ethel,” he finally answered, “I don’t see why the pig should take the blame for something that happened fifty years ago.”

    Happy April Fool’s Day!
