Quickslants: Metal turns 10, a couple of new albums and football, lot’s of football.

So Beijing has been gripped by football fever, with big screens popping up everywhere and fanatical supporters pulling all-nighters before enduring looong work days (or just flying over to Africa in the case of BD!). But there’s still plenty of music to be seen and heard this weekend, come out and support your local musos! And fit in a few games if you can too J

Thursday June 17

Gong Gong @ Yugong Yishan: Live and experimental Drum n’ Base duo from France hits YGYS supported by Alliances Françaises (free entry if you pick up an invitation from Alliance Française reception desk.)

Zhang Qian Qian @ Jianghu: This girl has been called a folk-rock siren, so the intimate Jianghu will be the perfect venue to hear her beautiful lyrics and vocals up close and personal.

Friday June 18:

Wu & The Side Effects Album launch @ 2 Kolegas
My pick of the weekend, this album rocks and as it will be Checho’s last show with the boys, definitely one not to be missed! The Amazing Insurance Salesmen will be opening. Two of my rock crushes at one venue – I’m there!

Chunqiu 10th Anniversary @ Mako Livehouse
Legends of Chinese rock and metal scene, these guys put on an awesome show. Let’s hope Mako has got the air-con (or lack of) situation sorted for this one!

The Medullary Paralysis & friends @ D22
“We don’t drink, we don’t take drugs, we don’t have sex, we feel compassion.” But they do play music and claim they will give you an out-of-body experience, what better reason to head out to the Wu this weekend?

Saturday June 19

Lonely China Day @ Mao Livehouse
Yep, Mao is alive and kicking again, playing host to a band often referred to as the “Chinese Radiohead” who will be launching their new album This Readily Assimilative People.

Blackwater @ V.A. Live: The little Hutong hideaway showcases the most authentic local Irish quartet. You’ve probably sent their faces in various other acts around the city, so come check out some toe tapping Irish tunes.

Sunday June 20

Vans Go Skateboarding Day @ Yugong Yishan: Free entry to see local rockers Reflector, Tookoo & Bigger Bang.

Pet Orphans Home Fundraiser @ 2 Kolegas
Come out and help support your furry friends! What a better way to spend a lazy Sunday, give out some love to the animals and get back some great tunes in return from Misandao, Early Bus, Life For Drinking, Unregenerate Blood, Discord, Hell City.

Italy v New Zealand 2.30am (Ok, so it’s really Monday):
Being half Kiwi, half Italian, this is the biggest game of the cup for me! I’ll be happy whoever wins, just hoping my Kiwistani brothers can put up a good show against the current World Champions!

Argh, too much music, too much football! Who needs sleep anyways?
