MIDI Awards 2012: Second Hand Recognized, Residence A tops, Escape Plan Sweep

Man.. I’m not sure where to start but i’m definitely shocked at what happened yesterday over at M Space for the 2012 MIDI Awards. AS I was waiting my turn to go in and present the one for Best Album Art, I was witnessing either a mockery or a change of the guard. Either ways, it was not funny.

I made it in bit late so I did unfortunately miss Ordnance‘s performance. That said, i heard they rocked the house. Brain Failure put on a decent show and so did Nova Heart. Actually, every performance i witnessed was good. However, the troubling part is what happened with the awards: Escape Plan, formerly known as Perdel, cleaned up every category pretty much. I hadn’t seen that happen since year 1 when Miserable Faith did almost the same thing.
Don’t get me wrong, I congratulate the band and wish them nothing but good luck for their future. However, if this is the direction rock n roll is supposed to be going in BEijing/China, then I’d rather close shop and go choke on Mao Chuan’s moptop.

A panel made the nominations and voted on them.. fair enough. Who the hell were these people where all of a sudden, a second rate imitation britpop band gets the nod for all the major award categories over folks who are a heck of a lot more talented?

In Album of the Year, Both King Lychee and Black Head were more deserving IMHO. They put out excellent original records with new songs, not remixes of old songs by some outside producer.
I can’t argue with song of the year because there are just too many.. still, I’m sure we could have found something out there.
Best rock Performance? dude… they sounded beyond horrible at MIDI and pretty much forced most of the crowd away from their stage. not by a mile… not with my definition of performance. Hanggai, King Lychee and Brain Failure all had amazing performances this year. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, heard it with my own ears. multiple times.

Best Male vocalist? pardon the fuck out of me… the voice has nothing special or original. it barely manages to fit in a song as opposed to carrying it. But then again, the list of nominees wasn’t something to jump about.

On the bright side, I’m happy to see Mamer get some recognition, same thing for second hand rose. It’s good to see MIDI giving nods to other companies out there by recognizing Scream Records work, although Pilot Records might be more deserving.
Ruby’s boys, Residence A took home “best new artist” and it’s hard to argue with that. Everyone that has seen them this year was impressed.. great job by the kids and here’s hoping it will give them some momentum into the new year.

Brain Failure, Four Five and King Lychee also took home some awards which keeps a little yaogun in there and stops things from being a complete farce… The small things we’re thankful for, eh?

Here is the full list of Results:

Album of the Year: Escape Plan, World 逃跑计划《世界》

we could also argue about the folk award but we’re not gonna. Ma Tiao has been working his ass off and it pays off. I might not like his style but at least, he has a freaking style.
What do you think?

Um, I think some of the categories are not right… while I do like both artists, best hard rock? THAT’S hard rock?? and best Female ROCK vocal? I like that song from Nova Heart but that’s rock? I dunno….
    Anyways, was fun

  2. Award shows are usually pretty bleak, but Brit Pop? Really? I totally agree with Daze.

[…] The 4th MIDI Music Awards went down without a hitch Sunday as awards were presented, fans rejoiced, and the critics came out. Escape Plan pretty much took home most of the key awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Rock Performance, and Male Vocalist. Helen Feng won for best female vocalist, Mamer for instrumentalist, Ma Tiao for folk artist, Brain Failure for live performance, Four Five for metal band, and King Lychee for hard rock performance. Residence A happily took home Best New Artist – thatta way. Oh, and Second Hand Rose won some accolades as well – a lifetime achievement something for being awesome. I for one didn’t make it to Wukesong, or elsewhere for that matter other than my sofa that day but BeijingDaze had some choice words about the show. Gotta love it when Badr gets riled up – check out the full list here. […]
